When Looms Speak

Woven Whispers at the National Crafts Museum celebrated the Indian saree and handloom heritage through fashion, craft, and contemporary design

Woven Whispers unfolded on a cool December evening, 14 December, at the Amphitheatre of the National Crafts Museum & Hastakala Academy, Pragati Maidan, setting a reflective tone ahead of Saree Day. Conceived as a celebration of the Indian saree’s timeless presence, the evening felt less like a formal showcase and more like an intimate conversation—between handloom and modernity, tradition and design, memory and movement.

A collaborative initiative by the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, FICCI FLO, and the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), Woven Whispers traced the evolving journey of Indian handlooms from ancestral craft to sustainable, design-led commerce. Central to this narrative was a conscious focus on women weavers, artisans, and creative entrepreneurs, whose skill, resilience, and innovation continue to shape India’s textile identity across regions.

The historic setting of the National Crafts Museum, New Delhi, added depth to the experience, grounding the evening in cultural context while allowing contemporary design to emerge organically. The event was graced by Dr. Malika Nadda, Chairperson, Asia Pacific Advisory Council of the Special Olympics Organisation, as Chief Guest, alongside Poonam Sharma, National President, FICCI FLO. They were joined by Ambar Pariddi Sahai, Day Chair and Governing Body Member, Smriti Puri, National Treasurer, FICCI FLO, and Sunil Sethi, Chairman, FDCI, each reinforcing the pivotal role of handlooms in India’s cultural economy and creative future.

A succinct panel discussion titled Craft to Commerce reflected on the changing handloom ecosystem, touching upon sustainability, women-led innovation, and the importance of stronger market linkages that enable artisan communities to thrive beyond seasonal platforms. Adding a contemplative layer to the experience was Weaves of India, an art installation that presented regional textiles as contemporary visual narratives, inviting audiences to engage with handloom beyond the runway.

Designer Showcase: The Loom Speaks

The fashion presentation unfolded as a dedicated showcase under the theme The Loom Speaks, positioning handloom as a living and evolving design language.

Abraham & Thakore presented a restrained, graphic interpretation of ikat, drawing from archival references and reworking them with modern clarity and precision.

Akaaro by Gaurav Jai Gupta explored engineered weaves that brought Banarasi craftsmanship into conversation with architectural structure, highlighting the possibilities of innovation rooted in tradition.

Lahé Looms by Jahnabi Phookan foregrounded Assam’s indigenous silks through a lens of slow fashion and community-led weaving practices, emphasising continuity, sustainability, and regional identity.

Advaya presented heirloom-quality handwoven textiles defined by nuanced textures, artisanal finesse, and a contemporary sensibility, reinforcing the enduring relevance of handloom in modern wardrobes.

Interwoven throughout the evening were classical dance and vocal performances, where rhythm, movement, and textile flowed together seamlessly, quietly reinforcing the saree’s place as both cultural expression and wearable art.

More than a ceremonial celebration, Woven Whispers reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Ministry of Textiles, FICCI FLO, and FDCI to nurturing meaningful designer–artisan collaborations, empowering women across India’s handloom clusters, and carrying Indian handwoven textiles from legacy craft to global consciousness without losing their soul.
