GLOBAL EDUCATION

Rooted in Culture, Ready for the World

Oliver Russell, Deputy Headmaster at Shrewsbury International School India, shares why young learners today are increasingly drawn to international boarding schools within India.

The world is a mosaic of ethnicities, languages, and cultures—a diversity that is mirrored in families and classrooms alike.

“I see this within my own family—a German wife, myself half English and half Indian. We have two young children with both German and British passports, now being educated in India. But I’m keen to celebrate the vast diversity of India itself within my family and, of course, at Shrewsbury,” shares Oliver Russell, Deputy Head of Strategy and School Development at Shrewsbury International School India.

At the heart of India lies a kaleidoscope of cultures. Thriving in this rich environment requires a global perspective and a multicultural approach to education. Students today are fortunate to benefit from a pedagogy that not only fosters academic growth but also prepares them for life as global citizens. A well-rounded education rooted in diversity cultivates empathy, inclusivity, and an open mind.

“International boarding schools, particularly in India, exemplify this,” says Oliver. “Pupils live and learn together in a rich cultural tapestry that not only builds a strong sense of community but also nurtures respect for multilingualism and shared traditions—qualities that will serve them well in the future.”

Set to open in Bhopal on August 8, 2025, Shrewsbury International School India is the first fully residential international campus of Shrewsbury School UK. It aims to welcome pupils from diverse nationalities.

“The educational philosophy of Shrewsbury is anchored in whole-person development,” Oliver explains. “We encourage both intellectual and reflective growth through a blend of academic and extracurricular experiences. This holistic model builds future global citizens who carry a lifelong love of learning—an appeal that has attracted families from India, as well as the USA, UK, UAE, France, and Bangladesh.”

He further notes, “In today’s world of layered complexities, education must act as a unifying force—preparing students for an interconnected future. International schools in India must marry global standards with Indian values. Our curriculum and campus life are designed to offer a world-class learning experience that still honours traditional Indian roots.”

Festivals like Holi, Eid, Christmas, and Diwali will be celebrated on campus as one family, fostering unity in diversity. Meanwhile, the dining hall will feature a blend of global flavours, reflecting the school’s cultural inclusivity.

“Life at Shrewsbury India will be a vibrant mix of collaborative learning, cultural diversity, and shared values,” Russell concludes. “It’s an experience designed to give pupils the confidence and insight to thrive—no matter where life takes them.”
