The Shift in Textile Retail Segment: Here’s What Consumers are Looking for

By Shivam Soni, Founder & CEO, Beyoung.in

Indian textile industry is one of the biggest employing industry estimating employment opportunities of 45 million people nationwide. With a long stretch from farming to selling the apparel to customers, the industry contributes GDP of 2.3 percent as recorded by the National Accounts Statistics (2016-2017).

Textile wholesale segment is a much diversified sector because it involves several stages for final productions. The mix involves farming, cutting, dying, weaving, stitching, embroidery etc. These are initiated at wholesale segment and carried forward to the Textile Retail Segment. Textile retail segment is one of the fastest running segments as you will find door to door outlets all over India, as India is the most popular textile hub globally.

Expectations Of Customers From Textile Industry

Nowadays, consumers are becoming more knowledgeable in terms of textiles and clothing. E-commerce market and the TV world has given people clothing goals. Considering this, you will find two types of people in the market. Firstly, there are people who shop directly from the readymade clothing stores. Secondly, you will find people who love to create their own designs. Hence, they end up at textile stores where they can do the match and mismatch of clothing.

Consumer’s thus expect a lot of things from the textile industry for several reasons. One of the core expectation is how organic and natural the fabric is, in terms of comfort. The textile world is quite diverse, especially in India. Now people can compromise on the price when they are more inclined towards quality. This has increased pressure on the textile industry as the quality highly matters. For instance, cotton, lycra, rayon etc. are being more popular today because of its level of comfort.

Another aspect is the colors and patterns obtained for a beautifully designed fabric. Plain colors, block print, screen print, embroidery and a lot more, the textiles offer all, considering consumer choices. Cities like Jaipur, Bikaner, Surat etc. are accordingly secluded varying with the textile obtained here. Popular fashion designer Sabyasachi too stated “his Crore worthy apparels are designed over textiles especially bought from a small retailer in Jaipur”. Climatic conditions and habitat make India diverse in terms of textile varieties. This has also led to increased consumer demand because premium quality lies right in the country.

Most Popular Textile Retail Segment In India

Cotton is the most commonly bought textile for both wholesale and retail segments. It is prominently known for its versatility for being shirts, t shirts, kurtas, shorts and what not. The cotton and cotton blend textile retail segment also allows most innovations and designer ideas. Famous brands such as Beyoung prominently deals in apparels made in cotton because of the unbeatable comfort.

Rise In Textile Retail Segment In India

The textile retail segment in India is growing immensely. The scenario is estimated as $103.4 billion in 2020-21. It is further expected to take a rise to $ 190 billion by 2025-26.

Cotton consumption across India is estimated to be $75 billion which is further segmented according to customer usage. $55 billion is used by people for making apparels at both wholesale and retail segments. $15 billion is used for technical textile consumption and an amount of $5 billion is dedicated to home furnishings. This cotton production is also used more for exports all across the world.

Consumers today are expecting better fabrics which can cope up with the weather and provide utmost comfort. The textile retail segment is sticking to it to the fullest and has thus experienced immense growth. According to reports, textile industry has valued exports worth $1297.82 billion by August 2021 and is expected to rise by 55.62% over years.

Growth rate of textile retail segment expected a growth of 8.7 percent from fiscal year 2015 to 2020, which is expected to increase rapidly.

Winter Care for the Heels

By Shahnaz Husain

Among winter problems, cracked heels are very common. The cold dry weather not only causes depletion of moisture, but also hampers proper blood circulation to the extremities. The skin on the heels is harder and thicker than most other parts of the body. Loss of moisture causes the living cells to change into dead horny cells. Therefore, there is a build-up of dead cells. If the lack of moisture proceeds unchecked, cracks develop on the heels and may even extend beyond the dead cells, causing pain.

Cracked heels can be prevented by giving the feet daily care, by way of massaging the skin with creams and protecting them from the cold, dry air. The problem can also be tackled with proper foot care.

Before bathing, apply a lemon-turmeric cream on the feet and heels, massaging it into the skin. This not only softens the skin, but also protects it from the drying effects of soap and chlorinated water. Turmeric has antiseptic properties too and thus provides protection from infections.

Aloe Vera is a powerful moisturizer and also has healing properties. It specially helps the skin on the heels. It repairs the cracks on the heels and makes the skin soft and smooth. Apply aloe vera gel daily on the feet and heels, washing off after 15 minutes.

At night, before retiring, soak the feet in hot water for about 20 minutes. Add some coarse salt and shampoo to the water, before soaking the feet. Hot water helps to soften the dead skin on the heels. With the help of a pumice stone or a heel scrubber, rub the heels gently, in order to remove the dead cells. If there is any pain, avoid using a metal scrubber. After washing the feet, massage with a good cream, rubbing it into the skin. Take a rich moisturizing cream or Vaseline and apply it generously on the heels. Bandage the heels with cheesecloth, or cotton wool and surgical gauze, and then wear cotton socks and go to sleep. This way, the cream will remain on the heels and not get on to the bedclothes. Keeping the heels smeared with cream all night will soften the skin and replenish moisture loss. Repeat this every night for at least 5 days or till the skin on the heels improves. Special medicated preparations for the heels are also available.

Ways to detox your skin post the festivities

By Dr. Blossom Kochhar

During the festive season, our skincare routine and regular diet surely go for a toss. Due to the excessive makeup, oily food, sleepless nights and other such factors lead to dry & dull skin or breakouts if left untreated for long. To keep your skin healthy and glowing a proper skincare regime should be followed after all festive celebrations.

As the festival ends you surely get the time to relax and rejuvenate yourself. Give your skin time and care to relax, restore and rejuvenate. Dr. Blossom Kochhar shares some easy ways to detox your skin post the festivities.

Step 1 – Daily cleansing is no doubt a necessity of any skin type. Cleansing helps to remove dirt, grime, pollution, excess oil that eventually leads to acne breakouts and various skin problems. You can either use a cleanser or a face wash to cleanse your skin. Try to use a face wash or cleanser with natural ingredients and fewer chemical ingredients. You can prepare your cleanser at home, or you can shop for some aromatherapy cleanser to help the skin heal more quickly.

Step 2 – You must exfoliate your skin. Exfoliation helps to deeply cleanse the skin, unclog pores and renew the skin within. You can use the face wash or an exfoliating gel to exfoliate the skin. Apply the face wash and gently massage the face with a brush. Alternatively, you can take the steam to exfoliate. Take some warm water in a bowl, add some rose petals or rose water to it and give your skin steam exfoliation with it for 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse off your skin with cold water to close skin pores.

Step 3 – Use a toner after exfoliation to close and tighten the skin pores. Toners help to maintain the pH balance of the skin and protect the skin from impurities, dust, etc. You can prepare toner at home using cucumber, rose water, or other ingredients as per your skin type or you can get any toner formulated with natural extracts. directly spray the toner onto the face or apply it with cotton.

Step 4 – Final step of your cleansing should always be moisturising. Moisturising keeps the skin firm, slows down aging and prevents blemishes. You can use milk cream to moisturise your skin, or you can use moisturiser as per your skin type. Oily skin, sensitive skin and combination skin types should prefer using hydrating moisturisers whereas dry skin types should use rich moisturisers to keep the skin nourished.
