Motivating the youth music director and composer Shamir Tandon says “There is no immense need for a record label or a brand to back artists up.”

Shamir Tandon emphasizes the importance of innovating and thinking ahead of time to be able to stand out. The man who has been wearing multiple hats, shares his experiences for the youth that has been into two minds about music.

From a corporate head honcho to a music director and from a composer to a curator, Shamir Tandon has always believed in innovation strongly. In a conversation, he also shared that the learnings studied in the business management space was more felt in real life through experiences, especially when he encountered a situation with Asha Bhosle Ji, decades ago. He shared the experience where Asha Ji had to sing a song, while she was in the US. At first, she was quite hesitant, but then she took a firm stand and decided to get into the studio and do the dynamics individually and independently. This was a phenomenon over a decade ago that was very new. At that moment he realized it is always important to take a step and think ahead of time.

With the same zeal, he has been motivating the youth on various aspects of life. It’s commendable to notice that a person who comes out of a simple middle-class family, with no music background or Bollywood connects makes it to international recognitions and also wins international awards, and represents India on global platforms. He truly believes that music has no boundaries, no limitations and so it should also not have apprehensions. Today the industry has been going through thick and thin due to the current situation but in times to come it’s going to roll just like before, just like nothing ever happened at all.

Speaking about motivating the youth, Shamir Tandon shares, “These are some difficult times and it is testing each one of us. The good part is that we today have so many streaming platforms and digital platforms that we can curate music and showcase our talent. There is no immense need for a record label or a brand to back artists up. For the youth today it is advised to stay calm, practice your skillset, get motivated, identify their hidden talent. When the door opens to opportunities, their zeal, enthusiasm, and skill will get them to where you want to be”.

Wildlife Conservation Hotspots in USA

The terms sustainable and conservation are ubiquitous when it comes to travel, just like authentic and experiential. Travellers are more aware of their environmental impact than ever before and want to support travel that is environmentally responsible and nature friendly. On World Nature Conservation Day, let’s visit these 5 places in the USA that have plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities and learn how the country is taking steps to prevent endangered species from going extinct.

Gray Seals Near Boston, Massachusetts

The largest gray seal population on the East Coast resides near Chatham, Massachusetts at the elbow of Cape Cod. Gray Seals were once hunted to near extinction for their oil and fur. It began receiving protected status in the 1970s and have since grown in numbers. A conservation success story, the rebounding seal and shark populations of Cape Cod are a testament to how regulatory protections can allow ecosystems to recover after decades of over-exploitation.

Puffins Near Augusta, Maine

Round-bellied puffins are one of the most adorable species. This seabird was nearly hunted to extinction until efforts began to restore it to its historic breeding grounds on the islands off Maine in the 1970s. You can still see puffins while taking a boat tour from New Harbor or Boothbay Harbor, both of which are one-hour or less drives from Maine’s capital of Augusta.

Tundra Swans and Bald Eagles Near Baltimore, Maryland

The Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge provides natural habitat for over 240 bird species. Tundra swans arrive at Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge for winter from late November to March ahead of their spring migrations. They can be viewed best from the Tundra Swan Boardwalk in the refuge. A bald eagle, the national symbol of the United States, can be spotted along the refuge’s hiking trails throughout the year.

Horseshoe Crabs Near New Jersey and Delaware

A unique species of ancient creature, horseshoe crabs, come ashore in Delaware Bay each May and June to spawn. Overharvesting and habitat loss have significantly reduced their number and horseshoe crabs are most visible during high tide on nights of new and full moons. Horseshoe crabs are native to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast of North America. They play a significant part in the food web for shorebirds and other species that migrate. A large number of volunteers work at documenting the spawning population to study the characteristics of the American Horseshoe Crab in Delaware Bay. A collaborative program with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection primarily focuses on rescuing crabs stranded on beaches that are closed seasonally between May and June for shorebird migration and horseshoe crab spawning.

San Juan Islands National Wildlife Refuge northwest of Seattle, Washington

The San Juan Islands, in the Salish Sea, are home to a vast and diverse population of birds, mammals and other marine life. In the refuge you can see black oystercatchers, rhinoceros auklets, and other birds, but getting close to them requires some adventurous travel. One must remain at least 182 meters off the coast. The only two islands open to visitors that have a campground and hiking trails are Matia and Turn, which are accessible only by boat. However, you can see a lot of  wildlife, including orcas, from the Washington State Ferries that travel to each of the four main San Juan Islands: Lopez, Orcas, San Juan and Shaw. Ferries leave from Anacortes, 128 kilometers north of Seattle.

Frequently asked questions answered by Shahnaz Husain

Q1. I am 17 and I have pimples. Will it disappear when I am older?

A1. You may be having acne, which can spread and cause scars, if not treated in good time.  Wash your face with a medicated face wash or cleanser twice a day. Apply astringent lotion. Apply sandalwood paste on the pimples. Medicated lotions and gels are also available. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water. Include fresh fruits, raw salads and sprouts in your daily diet.

Q2. Please tell me how to mix and apply henna.

A2. Take henna powder, according to the length of your hair. Mix 4 teaspoons each of lemon juice and coffee, half-cup yogurt (curd), two eggs (optional), into a paste. If you do not wish to use eggs, add more curd. Divide your hair into sections. Apply the henna paste on each section and wrap it around your head. Repeat this with all the sections, till your hair is totally covered with henna. Leave it on for an hour and wash off. If you have very dry hair, you can add two teaspoons of oil to the paste.

Q3. In your article, I read that sunscreen should have SPF. What is SPF?

A3. The SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It indicates the level of effectiveness of the sunscreen. The SPF is denoted by a number and should be mentioned on the label of a sun block product. If you stay out in the sun for longer durations, you need to apply sunscreen with a high SPF of at least 20 to 25. If your skin is highly sensitive to sun-exposure, you will have to use a product with a higher SPF of 40+.

Q4. My daughter’s hair and scalp have an unpleasant odour. How can this be prevented? She is 16 years old.

A4. You should first consult a dermatologist to find out if there is any scalp problem like a fungal or other infection. The problem may be due to an oily scalp. Wash the hair and scalp daily, using very little of a mild shampoo. Rub the shampoo into the scalp. Then use plenty of plain water to rinse the hair very well. After the shampoo, use a last rinse, by adding the juice of one lemon and a little eau-de-cologne to a mug of water. Weekly henna applications will help. The odour may be replaced by the fragrance of henna.

Awareness Generation Campaign on Single-Use Plastics – 2021

The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of IndiaUN Environment ProgrammeGIZ, and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) are organizing a two month long national awareness campaign on single-use plastics (SUPs). This campaign will comprise of four on-line regional events and a social media campaign to spread the awareness on the usage of SUP items and mitigation of plastic pollution.

Taking the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi ahead in phasing out SUPs by 2022, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India under the leadership and guidance of Hon’ble Union Minister Shri Prakash Javadekar, has launched a “National Awareness Campaign on Single-Use Plastics” on 8th June 2021.

In this context, the campaign aims at creating awareness on single-use plastic (SUPs) items, in a systemic manner, by not only emphasizing the need to reduce usage of SUP items but also identify and engage with stakeholders closely related to plastic waste management. We believe that it is awareness generation that is requisite for bringing about a behavioral change with respect to the usage of SUP items. The campaign is an attempt to highlight the present status of plastic waste management with a focus on SUP items in the country and how it can be effectively managed to reduce the harmful effects of littered plastic waste.

Rapid urbanisation and consumerism have led to an increase in plastic waste generation in the country. In such a scenario, we need to re-invent and find plausible solutions for sustainable plastic waste management. The campaign has identified the following themes to build on this comprehensive engagement: (i) Information on SUPs, (ii) Alternatives to Plastics and Rethinking Packaging, (iii) Value Chain Actors and (iv) Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system.

The event will be held on 27 July,2021.

There will be opportunities for enriching deliberations with participation from MoEFCC, State Governments, CPCB, SPCBs, Urban Local Bodies, Municipal Commissioners etc. Focal members and experts from United Nations Environment Programme; GIZ, technical experts, professionals, development partners, academia, civil society organizations, have also been invited to intervene along the conceptual theme.

Home Remedies for Oily Scalp During Rainy Season by Dr. Blossom Kochhar

Keeping your hair in good condition just like your skin is extremely important. Taking good care of your hair needs is a combination of caring it from outside and nurturing it from within with a well-balanced diet and use of the right products that suit your hair type.

Oily hair in monsoon can be very difficult to maintain, you are always busy scheduling your hair wash and thinking if you are over-shampooing your hair. Oiling becomes impossible, hair masks make hair oilier and you just wish you had dry hair. But worry not, where there is oily hair there is a silky solution.

Let’s try these natural remedies to combat oily hair and let their locks shine:

  • Coconut milk is the healthiest natural ingredient for healthy hair. The remedy you should try, mix freshly extracted coconut milk with a squeezed lemon and 4-5 drops of lavender essential oils. Leave it on for 4-5 hours and then rinse it off.
  • A big myth that I would like to rule out is, people with oily hair don’t need conditioner. They need a conditioner as much as those with dry scalp; they just have to apply it on the tresses and not take it to the scalp. Use a light conditioner; avoid using hair masks. A Conditioner that you can make at home for shine and sheen. Grate a few onions and some cabbage together and leave in a copper utensil overnight.  In the morning, add a few drops of ylang ylang essential oil to remove the onion smell.  Add a few drops of herbal oil and then apply.  Shampoo after 30 minutes.  Your hair will gain a superb gloss and color.  You may follow this routine once a week.
  • A Dandruff Cleanser for oily hair. Soak two spoonfuls of fenugreek (methi) seeds in water overnight.  In the morning, make a paste of the seeds and add a squeeze of lemon juice and apply on the head.  Leave it on for half an hour.  Then wash the hair with soapnut ( Reetha) or Shikakai and water.  You may use an herbal shampoo instead to wash your hair.  Do this routine twice a week.
  • Before you shampoo your hair, take 1 tablespoon of water, and 10 drops of patchouli essential oil. With your fingers apply this all over your scalp and hair. Shampoo your hair as you normally do.
  • To cut down oil from your hair, yet keeping it shiny, use apple cider vinegar as your last rinse. Take 1 teaspoon for 1 mug of water. In case you get hair fall after regular use, do not worry, just reduce the quantity of apple cider vinegar in your last rinse.
  • Stop running your hand or hairbrush through your hair frequently. This increases the sebum of your hair and causes oiliness. I am not saying to let them get tangled, just try brushing a lot and just run your fingers through your tresses and enjoy the natural flow of your hair.

Home grown brand Brillare launches its Zero Dilution, 100% natural face wash range

Brillare, the 100% vegan, natural personal care brand has launched India’s first-ever Zero Dilution face wash range. Launched on Amazon Prime Day, Brillare’s latest face wash range is free from synthetic chemicals, added water, and preservatives, with 100% natural neem, rose, and orange peel powder face washes. This new product range is curated with an aim to deliver genuine results from real natural products that consumers can now easily access without shelling out the big bucks!

Backed by intense research and formulation science, the Zero Dilution face wash range comes in three variants: Real Neem Face Face Wash, Real Vitamin C Face Wash, and Real Rose Face Wash

Real Neem Face Wash, is a chemical-free, 100 percent natural face wash produced from raw neem leaf powder for purified, clear skin. It’s made with 75% raw neam leaf powder and a 25% all-natural base, making it 15x more effective than a regular neem face cleanser while being fully safe.

Real Vitamin C Face Wash, is made from raw orange powder for glowing bright looking skin. This face wash is 5x more powerful than ordinary orange face wash as it contains guaranteed 5% stable vitamin C with 70% raw orange and 25% of all-natural ingredients.

Real Rose Face Wash, which is created from raw rose petal powder for rejuvenated, younger-looking skin. This face wash is very nutritious and entirely safer than a regular rose face wash since it is made with 70% rose petal powder and a 30% all-natural base.

The Brillare Real Face Wash series is available in two size variants of 15g and 45 g with an MRP price of INR 225/- and INR 595/- respectively.

Jigar Patel, CEO of Brillare who is also a formulation scientist said, “One of the most key issues in the market for personal care products is that more than 99 percent of hair and skin care products are produced with 60-70 percent water (aqua), 25-35 percent chemicals, and just 5 percent or even fewer natural components. It merely indicates that the items are “Diluted Cosmetics” rather than “Natural Cosmetics. The majority of face cleansers in the market comprise chemicals that not only dry up and irritate your skin but also damage the quality of your skin over time. As a consequence, chemical-free products are crucial in your skincare routine, especially when it comes to face cleansers. At Brillare, we are committed to offering only the highest quality products formulated with an amalgamation of science and natural ingredients. The entire powder-based face wash range is 100 percent natural, and loaded with the proven benefits of neem, orange, and rose, bringing zero dilution personal care to our Indian customers.”
