Heart Care Breakthrough

Woman Given Discharge within 24 Hours After Next-Generation Heart Rhythm Procedure at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital — The First of Its Kind in Western India

Pulsed Field Ablation — adopted in the US and Europe before reaching India — completed in under 90 minutes and actual ablation time was under 30 second, cutting conventional procedure time by nearly 60 per cent

A 62-year-old woman was discharged within 24 hours after undergoing Western India’s first Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) procedure at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, marking a significant milestone in advanced cardiac care. Performed on June 16, the next-generation treatment addressed atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm disorder that affects millions worldwide and significantly increases stroke risk.

Unlike conventional ablation methods that use heat or cold, Pulsed Field Ablation employs rapid, high-energy electrical pulses to precisely target abnormal heart tissue while minimizing damage to surrounding structures. The procedure, carried out using the Medtronic PulseSelect™ system, was completed in under 90 minutes, with the actual ablation taking less than 30 seconds—reducing treatment time by nearly 60 per cent compared to traditional techniques.

Led by Dr. Venkat D. Nagarajan and his team, the procedure highlights the arrival of a technology already adopted across leading centres in the United States and Europe. The patient resumed recovery swiftly and is expected to return to normal activities within a week.

The introduction of PFA in Mumbai expands access to cutting-edge heart rhythm treatment for patients across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, and Madhya Pradesh, further reinforcing Kokilaben Hospital’s commitment to advancing cardiovascular innovation in India.
