From Loom to Limelight

WEAVE ICONS Brings Assam’s Young Silk Weavers into the Fashion Spotlight

Long before silk graces the runway, it begins as rhythm—the measured movement of skilled hands across wooden looms in Sualkuchi, Assam’s legendary silk village. On Fashion Day, July 9, 2026, Rhythmic Threads introduced WEAVE ICONS, a cultural initiative that celebrates the next generation of Assamese silk weavers by placing them at the centre of the fashion conversation.

.Launched in association with the North East Creative and Cultural Foundation (NCCEF) and ARVAT JAYA, the inaugural edition introduces six young weavers from Sualkuchi—four women and two men—whose journey from loom to lens reflects a fresh perspective on heritage and identity.

Under the creative direction of acclaimed fashion designer and filmmaker Dipankar Kashyap, the participants were styled not as professional models but as authentic representatives of their own legacy. Their looks embraced contemporary aesthetics while remaining deeply rooted in the traditions they have inherited.

The portraits, captured in Sualkuchi by internationally acclaimed fashion photographer and filmmaker Somsubhro Sarkaar, founder of Rhythmic Threads, unfold against the backdrop of the village where generations have perfected the art of silk weaving. The familiar surroundings add depth to the imagery, transforming each frame into a visual narrative of craftsmanship, resilience and cultural pride.

Complementing the photographic series is a documentary-style case study film documenting the making of the project. Scheduled for release at a later stage, the film offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process while giving voice to the young artisans whose stories are seldom heard beyond the weaving community.

Rather than presenting heritage as something confined to museums or archives, the initiative demonstrates that traditional craftsmanship can occupy a meaningful place within contemporary fashion and visual storytelling. By celebrating the makers alongside their creations, it reframes the artisan as both creator and cultural ambassador.

Looking ahead, Rhythmic Threads plans to expand the platform across Northeast India, collaborating with weaving communities from diverse cultural backgrounds. The long-term vision is to create greater visibility for traditional artisans while encouraging younger generations to preserve and reimagine their ancestral crafts.
