Ask Shahnaz Husain

Frequently asked questions answered  by  Shahnaz  Husain

·         I have oily skin and rash on my nose, like prickly heat. Please suggest home remedies.

After cleansing, apply an astringent lotion, using cotton wool. It will be available at a cosmetic store. You can also apply sandalwood paste on the area daily. Wash off with plain water after 15 minutes. Mix multani mitti with rose water and apply two or three times a week on the face, avoiding lips and area around eyes. Wash it off when it is dry.

·          I have puffy skin under my eyes. So please suggest some home remedies.

Consult a doctor to ensure that that your kidneys and sinuses are functioning well. Ask for dietary advice too. Do not leave cream on around eyes at night when you sleep. It can lead to puffiness around eyes. Try some simple home remedies. Apply a compress of iced water or cold milk directly over closed lids and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Or soak cotton wool pads in chilled rose water and let it rest on under-eyes for 10 to 15 minutes. Grated potatoes or potato juice, applied around the eyes also helps to reduce puffiness. So do tea bags. Steep them in hot water; let them cool and use them as eye pads.

·         I have a wheatish complexion, which is a little on the darker side. My skin looks dull and tired. How to look fresh for long hours?

After cleansing, wipe the face with chilled rose water, using cotton wool. Use a facial scrub twice a week. This helps to remove dead cells and brighten the skin. For normal to dry skin, apply moisturising lotion. Then, apply compact powder. Mix one teaspoon each of honey and lemon juice and apply daily on the face, at any time. Wash off after 20 minutes. Or, take ripe papaya pulp, two teaspoons oats and one teaspoon curd. Apply on face twice a week. Wash off after 20 minutes with plenty of water.

·          I have shoulder length hair, which does not grow. Please suggest how to make it grow longer.

The average rate of hair growth is half an inch per month. There may be some differences due to hereditary factors. Twice a week heat pure coconut oil and apply on the hair. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the hot towel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for 5 minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap 3 or 4 times. This helps the hair and scalp absorb the oil better. Diet is very important. Have a small bowl of sprouts daily and include fresh fruits, salads, leafy green vegetables, soya bean, dals, beans, curd, in your diet. Ask your doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements.
