ISHA AMBANI IN GAURAV GUPTA COUTURE AT THE MET GALA 2026
Businesswoman, philanthropist, and arts patron Isha Ambani made a commanding statement at the Met Gala 2026, stepping onto fashion’s most celebrated red carpet in a custom creation by Gaurav Gupta Couture for the very first time. Held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the appearance quickly emerged as one of the most talked-about Indian couture moments of the evening.
The ensemble brought together textile, jewellery, and sculptural artistry through a distinctly Indian lens, celebrating the continuity of heritage craftsmanship while presenting it within a contemporary couture narrative. Rooted in traditions where adornment and garment exist as one, the look reflected India’s evolving fashion identity on a global stage.

The Jewellery Narrative
At the centre of the couture creation was a jewellery-integrated blouse, meticulously handcrafted with over 1,000 diamonds and precious stones totaling more than 1,800 carats. Featuring heirloom old mine diamonds, rare emeralds, alongside traditional polki and kundan elements from Nita Ambani’s personal collection, the masterpiece was developed by 40 artisans across India. The piece seamlessly fused historic jewellery traditions with modern couture construction, transforming ornamentation into wearable art.

Conceived as an extension of the garment itself, the blouse integrated jewellery directly into the textile through intricate zardozi anchoring and hand-tucking techniques. Crafted over 500 painstaking hours, the surface featured traditional embroidery methods such as dabka and nakshi, resulting in a richly dimensional and sculptural finish. At the back sat a rare Mughal-era sarpech dating between the 16th and 18th centuries, once part of the Nizams of Hyderabad collection. Set with table-cut and rose-cut diamonds in traditional kundan settings and finished with suspended antique emerald bead drops, the archival piece added layers of history, craftsmanship, and cultural memory to the look.
The jewellery styling echoed India’s longstanding tradition of adornment as both identity and artistic expression. Layered diamond necklaces and sculptural earrings referenced classical forms while maintaining an effortless sense of fluidity and contemporary elegance.
A Saree Rooted In Heritage

Balancing the richness of the blouse was a luminous tissue saree custom woven with gold by master artisans from the Swadesh collective. Draped traditionally in its complete form, the saree celebrated one of the world’s oldest surviving garments while reinforcing its enduring relevance within modern couture fashion.
Styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, the look drew inspiration from India’s textile and visual heritage, referencing early civilisational drapes and ornamentation spanning the Indus Valley to classical Indian painting traditions. The result was a couture expression that honoured over 5,000 years of artistic legacy while remaining strikingly contemporary.
The saree’s border became a storytelling canvas in itself, featuring hand-painted and hand-embroidered motifs inspired by the Ajanta cave murals — among the earliest surviving examples of Indian painting, celebrated for their depictions of draped garments, ornamentation, courtly life, and the natural world. Executed over 150 hours by six artisans from the Swadesh collective under the direction of Pichwai artist Trilok Soni, the detailing was elevated through zardozi, aari work, and layered embroidery techniques that added depth, texture, and movement.
The complete ensemble came together through the work of more than 50 artisans, collectively contributing over 1,200 hours across weaving, painting, embroidery, jewellery integration, and couture construction. Completing the look was a custom sculptural cape created using Gaurav Gupta’s signature in-house resin draping technique, adding a dramatic yet restrained couture finish.
Indian Couture On The Global Stage
Speaking about the vision behind the ensemble, Gaurav Gupta shared, “The saree is one of the few garments in the world that has existed continuously for thousands of years and is still worn today, which makes it incredibly powerful. With this look, we wanted to honour that continuity while approaching it with restraint, allowing the form and the craft to speak for themselves. Isha embodies a modern Indian identity with a natural confidence, which made her the perfect person to carry this narrative on a global stage.”

Anaita Shroff Adajania added, “Working with Gaurav is always such a treat. This look marked a departure from his usual couture language — it was about embracing something more pared down. While the blouse carries richness, the focus remains on the saree, something we both wanted to honour.”

More than a fashion moment, Isha Ambani’s Met Gala 2026 appearance became a powerful representation of Indian couture, heritage textiles, and artisanal excellence on one of the world’s biggest cultural platforms. The custom ensemble marked not only her debut in Gaurav Gupta Couture at the Met Gala, but also another defining global moment for contemporary Indian fashion.
