Recreating Looks from Your Favourite Television Shows and Movies

Style and clothing are deeply embedded into how one gets perceived. Think back to your most loved characters from your favourite television shows. Chances are that the fashion sensibilities of a character have grown on you just as much as their role. Be it a casual, boy-next-door look, a fashionista air, a grungy, rugged style, or a classic, suave appeal, every look is an extension of a character’s vibe and persona, which is hard to ignore.

Raising a toast to the style legacy created by television dramas, we have curated some looks from the more popular television shows in recent times, which have been recreated by home-grown labels.

Never Have I Ever

High-school romance, teen drama, casual flings and one helluva series, Never Have I Ever reeks of pure fun and light-heartedness. The coming-of-age series needs an excuse for being binge-watched (or re-watched), only to enjoy its special vibe and energy.

Character- Paxton Hall-Yoshida from Never Have I Ever is one high-school kid who almost has it all – style, good looks, love and fame. He is a hot-looking chap with a nonchalant attitude who is always looking to maintain his status quo and who knows how to get everyone’s attention.

Recreation- This casual yet trendy look recreated by Kunal Anil Tanna aptly matches Paxton Hall-Yoshida’s cool-looking and six pack abs vibe. Just like the original look, this one maintains the character’s fashion game with a trendy jacket and a contrasting shirt, and matches Paxton Hall-Yoshida’s high-school avatar.

The Bold Type

The Bold Type chronicles the lives of three best friends, all women, working for the same magazine in New York City, as they navigate the trials and thrills in their careers and personal lives as millennial women.
Character- Living in New York City, Suton Brady is a hard-working, career-driven woman working in the fashion department of a magazine. She is unapologetic in her decision of doing whatever it takes to pursue her passion and live her dream. Her love life goes through several highs and lows before she marries the man of her choice.

Recreation – Fun, fancy and fashionable, the ensemble recreated by Devina Juneja encapsulates Suton Brady’s style and vibe. The style, symmetry and the fabric are an amalgamation of plain and plush, to lend a well-defined character to the outfit, akin to the one embodied by Suton Brady’s clothing in The Bold Type.

The Kissing Booth

The Kissing Booth is an American rom-com that revolves around the life of a high-school student who encounters her long-time crush face-to-face, when she decides to run a kissing booth during a spring carnival.

Character- Leader of the OMG girls’ group, Mia King (in blue) is a Britney Spears-loving, manipulative, mean girl who resorts to plotting and scheming to grow closer to the film’s main lead, Noah, by pretending to like someone else.

Recreation- Mia is a teen fashionista with an attitude of her own. The two-piece bikini by Flirtatious embodies all the oomph and sizzle to reflect Mia’s chic, sassy and I-don’t-care-about-anyone vibe. The recreated look is an ode to Mia’s high school, urbane style with a twist.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is a romantic film based on the life of a high-school teenager who writes secret, passionate letters to her crushes, until the letters mysteriously go public, leading to a series of unforeseen events, which summarize the film’s plot.

Character- Lara Jean is a half-white and half-Korean high-school teenager who is sweet, shy and awkward. She shares a strong bond with her family, mainly her sisters, and displays a strong liking for baking, fashion and crafting.

Recreation- Lara Jean’s cute, soft and trendsetting fashion sense, with hints of her Korean culture, has been recreated by House of Fett with just the right elements. The statement, red dress is super cool and dressy with a vintage vibe. Just like the original outfit, it is a fine blend of soft and sexy, which is an ode to Lara Jean’s style.

Bladder Cancer: Everything you need to know

By  Dr Pankaj N. Maheshwari, Senior Consultant and Chief Urologist, Fortis Hospitals, Mulund~

Cancer has been one of the leading causes of disease-related death for a long time. Among all kinds of cancers, Bladder Cancer is the ninth most common malignancy worldwide, affecting nearly 430,000 people every year. India alone had 18,921 new cases of bladder cancer in 2020, with an incidence rate of 2.4 in males and 0.7 in females per lakh population until 2020. The mortality rate being 1.3 in males and 0.3 in females.

The urinary bladder, a vital organ, is involved in collecting and storing urine from the Kidneys before disposal. The bladder is a hollow, muscular and distensible (or elastic) organ. This cancer begins when the bladder’s lining (Urothelial Cells) cells start to grow abnormally and out of control. The cells multiply with time, and cancer may eventually go deep in the bladder muscle or spread to different body parts. Urothelial cells are also present in the inner lining of the kidney and ureters. Different types of Bladder Cancer are:

  • Urothelial Carcinoma – This type of cancer is also called Transitional cell carcinoma. This is the most common variety of bladder cancer; tumours can also develop in the kidney and ureter as they also share the urothelial lining.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma arises when there is a chronic infection or irritation to the bladder like a long-term urinary catheter or neglected stones. This is relatively common in places where Schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection, is a cause of bladder infections
  • Adenocarcinoma is another rare form of bladder cancer that arises from the mucus-secreting glands cell in the organ

SYMPTOMS OF BLADDER CANCER:

  • Hematuria (blood in urine): this is a standard mode of presentation. It is essential not to neglect visible or microscopic blood in urine after the age of 40 years.
  • Frequent and painful urination
  • Abdominal, lower back pain
  • Urinary incontinency

HIGH-RISK FACTORS:

The significant risk factors for bladder cancer include tobacco smoking, industrial exposure to potential carcinogens such as aromatic amines and carbon black dust, long-term drinking of arsenic-contaminated or chlorinated water, and family history of Prostate, Endometrial and Bladder Cancers.

Smoking – Smoking is not just responsible for oral and lung cancer. Smoking cigarettes, cigars and even pipes can also cause bladder cancer, as certain harmful chemicals excrete out of the body through urine. This, in turn, damages and deteriorates the bladder lining, thus increasing cancer chances
Gender – Men are more likely to develop this cancer in their lifetime than women.
Exposure to chemicals – Kidneys play a primary role in filtering harmful substances from our bodies and bloodstream. Thus, exposure to arsenic, aromatic amines, chemicals used to manufacture dyes, rubber, leather, etc., is detrimental to health.
Personal or family history of bladder cancer is another highly probable risk factor for the disease.
Urinary Tract infections or bladder problems – Frequent bladder inflammation or infections and bladder stones may go on to cause bladder cancer

Evaluation and management:

Apart from basic pathology evaluation, CT scan and endoscopic examination (Cystoscopy) are the mainstays for the diagnosis. Treatment depends on the stage of the disease. Early and superficial tumours may be managed endoscopically, but once it grows inside the bladder wall, removal; of the bladder becomes necessary.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN:

Many risk factors can be modified by lifestyle measures and environmental protective initiatives, implying a solid prospect for intervention. To initiate lifestyle changes, one must avoid or, better yet, quit smoking. Drink lots of fluids because when a person urinates, they get rid of the harmful chemicals that initiate and cause Cancer growth. If your job requires you to be around chemicals, take necessary precautions to protect yourself. Lastly, include plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables, rich in antioxidants, macro and micronutrients, in your diet. Finally, being observant of the colour of urine and symptoms can be instrumental in saving lives.

Hakkasan Dubai Returns With a Brand New Lounge, Hakkatini Nights & Reimagined Food and Cocktail Menu

After temporarily closing its doors this summer, the award-winning global Cantonese restaurant Hakkasan Dubai has reopened with a refreshed interior and a reimagined seasonal food and cocktail menu. Following Hakkasan’s relocation to Atlantis, The Palm in October 2018 as a pop-up, its wildly successful tenure over the past two years has ensured the restaurant a permanent home at the resort. With this in mind, over the summer of 2021, Hakkasan appointed Design Worldwide Partnership to spearhead an enhancement programme to elevate the guest experience and deliver a renewed look and feel to the popular restaurant.

The recent Hakkasan remodel features a stylish new lounge area, inviting guests to enjoy pre or post-dinner cocktails and signature bites in a more relaxed space. The intimate and elegant dining area has also been refreshed with a colour palette of dark blue and turquoise tones complemented by intricately carved wood screens and latticing to create a more ambient dining space.

Hakkasan Dubai Returns

Hakkasan’s lounge will also come to life each evening with the launch of the brands’ celebrated Hakkatini Nights. Taking place every evening from 10:30 pm in the lounge and bar, guests can enjoy after-dinner or late-night cocktails for just AED 98 per person including two beverages or AED 138 per person including two beverages and a small eat. Beverages include signature cocktails such as the Apple Ginger Martini and the Hibtini, as well as an extensive selection of wines, beers and spirits. The Small Eat menu features signature favourites, including the Wagyu Beef Puff, Salt and Pepper Squid and the Chilli Crab Taro Croquette.

Further,

In celebration of fresh and seasonal ingredients, Hakkasan’s menu continues to offer restaurant signatures as well as a selection of brand-new dishes featuring sustainably sourced produce. This includes the Spicy Organic Yellowtail, Assam Seafood Toban, Curry Sweet Potato, and a locally handpicked King Oyster Mushroom Salad – capturing the very best of the UAE’s organic, fresh and local ingredients. Additional new signature dishes include the Mala Wagyu Short Rib with pumpkin crisp and the Lychee Lobster with yuzu pearl – dishes which have been crafted exclusively for Hakkasan Dubai.

Hakkasan Dubai is also one of the first in the world to feature Love Stories, a new cocktail collection inspired, in part, by the cult Wong Kar-Wai film In the Mood for Love. The iconic film, set against the seductively glamorous backdrop of 1960s Hong Kong, is a story of love, intimacy, escapism, passion and longing. The new Love Storiescollection at Hakkasan Dubai tells a similar story of love and desire through cocktails which capture and invigorate the senses, taking guests on a sensorial journey through taste, smell, touch and sight. Guests can savour the captivation of ‘The Far East’ with bold flavours of kaffir lime, pear, and plum sake, or experience the passion of ‘Mistress of Deception’ with a theatrical element at the start followed by sweet and tangy flavours of Aperol, passionfruit and Rose champagne.

The reimagined menu and refreshed space for Hakkasan Dubai is the first project for global hospitality company Tao Group Hospitality since taking over the global culinary brand in April 2021.  Tao Group Hospitality now operates61 entertainment dining and nightlife venues in 22 markets across five continents and features a collection of widely recognized hospitality brands. These include Tao, Marquee, Lavo, Beauty & Essex, Avenue, Cathédrale and Koma brands, as well as Hakkasan, Yauatcha, Omnia, Ling Ling, Jewel and Casa Calavera brands, among many others.

In the next couple of month’s Hakkasan Dubai will continue its transformative journey with a new Friday brunch concept due to launch in mid-September.
