Hemp Oil is extracted from the seed of the hemp plant; mostly from the flower and leaf. The oil is cold-pressed and has numerous health benefits. These benefits include improving skin health thanks to its nourishing vitamins and moisturizing qualities.

It is quite popular right now because of its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Hemp oil is a go-to ingredient for bath and skincare products, including bath salts and lip balms.

How does hemp oil benefit your skin?

There are a number of skincare benefits that you can get from using hemp seed oil, either topically or by consuming it.

Moderates oil production

Hemp oil is perfect for most skin types as it can moisturize without clogging your pores. It can even help to balance out oily skin, hydrating it, and regulating the skin’s oil production. Dryness can also cause your skin to overproduce oil, which in turn, can stimulate acne. Hemp oil can prevent dry skin without clogging pores. This helps reduce acne that’s caused by excess oil.

Moisturizes and soothes inflammation

One of the omega-6 fatty acids that hemp oil contains is gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Which acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory while simultaneously encouraging skin growth and new cell generation. This can help to calm inflammation and irritation on the skin, including acne. And some conditions like psoriasis, while keeping the skin nourished and moisturized.

Treats atopic dermatitis

Part of what makes hemp seed oil so beneficial to the skin is that it’s rich in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Consuming these nutrients can help to treat skin conditions like atopic dermatitis. One randomized, single-blind crossover study found evidence that dietary hempseed oil reduced the symptoms and appearance of clinical atopic dermatitis after 20 weeks.

Has anti-aging properties

In addition to moisturizing and soothing the skin, hemp oil has anti-aging properties. Hemp oil can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well as prevent signs of aging from developing. The linoleic acid and oleic acids found in hemp oil can’t be produced by the body but can play a crucial role in skin health and anti-aging, so they’re important nutrients to add to the diet.

Hemp oil is considered safe for most people to use, and it can help moisturize the skin from the inside out. Start with just 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of hemp oil a day before working up to more.

You can also combine hemp oil and other anti-inflammatory and soothing ingredients with a recipe like the following, which can be applied directly to the skin:

1/4 cup hemp oil

2 teaspoons melted coconut oil (can be melted in the microwave; place the desired amount in a microwaveable container and heat in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until completely melted)

4 to 5 drops of skin-boosting essential oil, like lavender or rosemary oil

There is a slight confusion about Hemp oil because it has been called by various names and is associated with CBD or cannabis oil. Hemp oil is mostly extracted from Cannabis Sativa plant seed and therefore is known by that name too. But whatever be the name, the oil has magical properties and is also prescribed for oral consumption but do not consume it without a prescription.

“Awareness Campaign on Single Use Plastics”

The Third regional event under the ‘Awareness Campaign on Single-Use Plastics-2021’ for Eastern and North-Eastern India covering stakeholders from industry, government, citizens group, NGOs and academic institutions was held virtually on 13^th of August 2021. This is in line with the two-month long Awareness Campaign on Single-Use Plastics jointly organized by GIZ, UNEP, FICCI and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India which was launched on the 8^th June 2021 by the Ministry . The awareness campaign consists of four on-line regional events, along with a social media campaign on mitigation of plastic pollution..

Mr. Harikumar Thingbaijam, Director, Ministry of Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development (MAHUD), Manipur emphasized on the need to act fast and organise ourselves in a more systematic manner. He further added that, ‘We all have to be responsible on our behalf and should support our government too in their campaign for our own good. This whole issue is critical, and the campaign will be successful if it is a coordinated effort by the government, business, civil society and citizens, so it is imperative that they come together to address this issue.’

The panel discussion highlighted the key aspects of tackling plastic waste. The members of the panel discussed the need of awareness amongst the public and emphasized that segregation of waste is crucial for effective waste management. The speakers discussed the central themes of alternatives to plastics; the need of an inclusive approach to plastic’s value chain and responsibility of the producers to manage plastics introduced in the market. This discussion brought forth the experiences of each of the speakers working in the domain of plastic waste management and alternatives to plastics. The need of the hour is to transform the awareness campaign into a people’s campaign at the grass root level and bring systemic change in the society.

The event saw vibrant participation of stakeholders from Industry, Government, citizen’s group, academic institutions, State Governments, CPCB, SPCBs, Urban Local Bodies, and Municipal Commissioners etc. Focal members and experts from the United Nations Environment Programme; GIZ, technical experts, professionals, development partners, academia, civil society organizations, also attended the launch event today across the cities of eastern and north-eastern India.

Frequently asked questions answered by the pioneer of the Ayurvedic beauty

1. I often read that lemon juice can make your skin lighter. How should it be used? Can I apply lemon juice directly on my skin?

Lemon juice should not be applied directly on the skin. It will irritate the skin. You should dilute lemon juice with a little rose water, or you can mix it with honey and then apply it. It can also be added to face packs. On some areas of the body, where the skin is thick, like the knees and elbows, lemon juice can be used directly. You can also try rubbing pieces of lemon on the feet.

2. My upper lip is darker than my lower lip. When I apply lipstick, it looks as if I have applied two different colours.

First put a little bit of foundation on both lips. After a few minutes, apply a dark matte (not shiny) colour on the lower lip. Choose a brown colour, which matches with the natural colour of the upper lip. Then apply the colour of your choice on both lips. You can also apply pure almond oil daily at night on the upper lip and leave it on overnight. It may help to lighten the colour.

3. How can I mix henna for dry hair?

To mix henna for dry hair, add 4 teaspoons each of lemon juice and coffee, 2 raw eggs, 2 teaspoons coconut oil and enough curd to the henna powder, mixing it into a thick paste. Apply on the hair and wash off after an hour with plain water. If you do not wish to use egg, add more curd. If you want colour, avoid curd and add “tea water.” Make “tea water” by boiling used tea leaves again in enough water. Then cool, strain and add to the henna.

4. You advised hair serum. What is it and how should I use it?

A hair serum is like a light leave-on conditioner. It helps to form a protective cover over the hair and make it more manageable. It softens the hair and makes it smoother. It is helpful for dry hair and also hair that is subjected to dyeing, colouring, bleaching and straightening. It can also add shine to the hair. Usually, very little hair serum should be used. Take a few drops on the palm and massage it lightly into the hair after shampoo. Leave it on. Or, follow the directions on the label.
