Emery Studio

Bespoke decorative lighting, home decor and tableware specialist Emery Studio brings to India, an exquisite new collection known as L’OBJET Haas Brothers by the eponymous brand— L’OBJET.

L’OBJET Haas Brothers is a meeting of imaginative minds and skilled hands. Inspired by the otherworldly landscape of Joshua Tree, the Los Angeles-based artists Simon and Nikolai Haas worked in close collaboration with Elad Yifrach, Creative Director, and the master craftsmen at L’OBJET to create a family of characterful creatures with the highest quality of finish and function.

The design team at L’OBJET worked on a series of shapes for scale and function, which the brothers used as canvases for their creative fantasies. 3D-printing enabled the designs to transport from the Brothers’ studio in LA to the L’OBJET porcelain atelier in Portugal. Together with Elad, the brothers flew to Portugal to manually work and sculpt each prototype by hand before molds were made ready for porcelain pouring. L’OBJET Haas Brothers captures a delicate balance between retaining the hand as the primary tool, and using technology to support a complex and precise process.

The fantasy world encompasses tableware, home décor, textiles, and fragrance. True to the L’OBJET brand philosophy, all items are not only beautifully formed, but also elegantly functional. The dinnerware is embellished with whimsical motifs from the Mojave Desert, setting the scene for the fantasy behind the collection. Across the home décor and textile categories, signature Haas Brother textures come into play: hand-carved scales, porcelain ‘fur’ and whimsical horns add a playful touch to otherwise organic forms. “It’s a full fantasy world, brought together with a specific and prolific point of view,” stated Elad Yifrach, Founder and Creative Director of L’OBJET.

Second Skin Series

In order to survive the punishing conditions of the Mojave Desert, the most resilient of creatures from the Haas monster family developed a magical second skin. Forming protection from the harsh sun and bitter nights, they glimmer by day and pulse by night. The Second Skin Vessel Series includes 12 hand-painted designs, each a limited edition of 15.

Mojave Palm

The newest scent by master perfumer Yann Vasnier featuring notes of papyrus, guaiac wood, balsam fir, patchouli and frankincense. Available in a one-wick sculpted porcelain votive, four-wick unicorn monster candle, and Japanese incense.

Healthy habits to maintain while dining out

By Dr Paritosh Baghel, Consultant General Physician, SL Raheja Hospital, Mahim – A Fortis Associate

The city of Mumbai is finally limping back to normalcy. Soon the local trains, restaurants, malls, and recreations areas will open for people. As restaurants resume and continue operations in the city, here are a few considerations for ways in which people can reduce risk and the spread of COVID19 and ensure a healthy life. COVID19 is mostly spread when people are physically near (within 6 feet) a person with COVID19 or have direct contact with that person. When people with COVID19 cough, sneeze, sing, talk, or breathe, they produce respiratory droplets. Infections occur mainly through exposure to respiratory droplets when a person is in close contact with someone who has COVID19.

There is evidence that under certain conditions, people with COVID19 seem to have infected others who were more than 6 feet away – this is called airborne transmission. These transmissions occurred within enclosed spaces that had inadequate ventilation. Available data indicates that it is much more common for the virus that causes COVID19 to spread through close contact with a person who has COVID than through airborne transmission.

Respiratory droplets can also land on surfaces and objects. It is possible that a person could get COVID19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or eyes. Spread from touching surfaces is not thought to be a common way that COVID19 spreads. Fortunately, there are a few actions operators of restaurants and bars can take to help lower the risk of COVID19 exposure and spread while dining out.

  • Wearing mask
  • Promote hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette
  • Post signs in highly visible locations (e.g., at entrances, in restrooms) that promote everyday protective measures
  • Keep enough ventilation

Food habits to consider:

While maintaining hygiene some dietary factors can also reduce risk of COVID19 such as eating a healthy diet, being physically active, managing stress, and getting enough sleep, are critical to keeping our immune system strong. In the face of current uncertainties, here are some strategies and resources to help maintain some of these practices in dining.

For people dining out:

Your diet should include:

  • Plenty of vegetables, including different types and colours, and legumes/beans
  • All seasonal fruits
  • Grain (cereal) foods, mostly wholegrain and/or high cereal fiber varieties, such as Breads, Cereals, Rice, Pasta, Noodles, Polenta, Couscous, Oats, Quinoa and Barley
  • Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, Tofu, nuts and seeds, and legumes/beans
  • Milk, Yogurt, Cheese, and/or their alternatives

Healthy eating habits include:

  • Be physically active and choosing amounts of nutritious food and drinks to meet your energy needs
  • Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Limit intake of foods containing saturated fat added salt and added sugars such as biscuits, cakes, pastries, pies, processed meats, commercial burgers, pizzas, fried foods, potato chips, crisps and other sugary or savoury snacks
  • Limit intake of alcohol
  • Care for your food, prepare and store it safely
  • Plan a set time for exercise or other fun physical activities

Romaana unveiled his eagerly awaited EP, ‘Mehrbaniaan’ via Desi Melodies today. It consists of four songs written, composed, and performed by the 26-year-old. The music has been produced by Jaani, Avvy Sra, and Jaydden.

Talking about his latest release, Romaana said “After putting out my debut single ‘Goriyaan Goriyaan’ in April 2021. I spent the majority of my time writing new songs, and ‘Mehrbaniaan’ is the result! This project is very close to my heart and inspired by real-life events. Lyrically, each song explores a different theme of romance. Which I think the listeners will resonate to in their personal capacity. I wanted to try out something new in terms of music. And a heartfelt thanks to Jaani, Avvy Sra, and Jaydden, for creating music that sounds so fresh. I hope you all like the EP and spread the love!”

Further,

The first song that shares its name with the EP, ‘Mehrbaniaan’, is a story from the perspective of a helpless bride who is thanking her toxic admirer to exit her life; ‘Khair Allah Khair’ articulates the protagonist’s longing to see his partner; ‘Kithe Reh Gaye’ expresses the craving for his lover to come back; and for ‘Mann Dolje’ Romaana uses the canvas to praise his lover’s eyes and how captivating they are by using alluring metaphors.

Romaana was discovered by Jaani in 2017 and since then he has been mentored by the ace lyricist, giving him the opportunity to be a part of record-shattering songs like Arijit Singh’s ‘Pachtaoge’ and ‘Filhall’ by B-Praak. He has also composed the first stanza of B-Praak’s ‘Baarish Ki Jaaye’ featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sunanda Sharma, and is credited as the lyricist of Jassie Gill’s super hit song ‘Ehna Chauni Aa’ that earned him critical appreciation and brilliant fan reaction. The young talent has contributed to superhits like ‘Haath Chumme’, ‘Sufna’ and ‘Qismat’ as well. Romaana embarked on the journey as a solo artist ‘Goriyaan Goriyaan’ under the production of Desi Melodies. 12 Best California Bites

Thanks to the state’s year-round fruit and vegetable harvests, 840 miles of bountiful coastline. And innovative chefs championing cuisines from around the world. California is tough to beat when it’s time to tuck into a meal. Which makes this—narrowing it all down to a mere dozen highlights—a daunting task. Luckily, we found some very qualified help: Farley Elliott covers restaurant culture. And food news as the senior editor at Eater LA. He’s also the author of Los Angeles Street Food: A History From Tamaleros to Taco Trucks. Here is his list.

1. Farm-to-Fork Dining

Sacramento
California produces one-third of the nation’s vegetables, two-thirds of its fruits and nuts. And 90 percent of its leafy greens—which means you don’t have to try too hard to find extraordinarily fresh food. Nowhere is that more evident than Sacramento, the state capital, which sits at the apex of the ag-centric Central Valley. Easy access to this abundance, along with a deep roster of talented chefs, make this up-and-coming city an essential culinary destinationLocalis stands tall as a bastion of the farm-to-fork movement. Relying on micro-seasons and farmer relationships to change its menu almost daily. Many others, including Magpie Cafe and The Waterboy, follow a similar approach—much to the delight of locals.

2. Hog Island Oyster Co.

Marshall
The venerable Hog Island Oyster Co. sits at the eastern edge of Tomales Bay, northwest of San Francisco in Marin County. The salty, calm waters are perfect for oyster beds, and even more perfect for a weekend visit with a crisp. Local Chardonnay in hand. Hog Island’s Boat Oyster Bar, located right on the water, is an ideal setup for couples or small groups who want to go deep on seafood. The menu is far from robust (mostly just oysters and other ancillary items). But that’s the point: shuck, grill, sip, and enjoy the breeze. This is a working oyster farm, so watch as workers pack crates of the bay’s bivalves to distribute across the region to outposts like Swan Oyster Depot in San Francisco.

3. Fish Tacos

San Diego
San Diego may be best known for a world-class zoo, pristine beaches, and excellent beer, but there’s something else you need to know: The fish tacos are fantastic. Thanks to its proximity to Baja California, this is a hotbed of Mexican seafood shops that specialize in fish tacos. Served hot out of the fryer with zippy slaw, lots of salsa, and wedges of lime. El Zarape is the taco stop of choice for local college kids, while families and surfers alike hit Pacific Beach Fish Shop located just a few blocks from the water. For the hands-down best, you’ll be hard-pressed to beat the freshness of Blue Water Seafood Market in Mission Hills. Want even more tacos? Go on the Southern California Taco Tour Road Trip to sample from Los Angeles to San Diego.

4. In-N-Out Burger

Everywhere
It’s hard to overstate the importance of In-N-Out to local life. Stopping in for a Double-Double (two beef patties, two slices of American cheese, secret sauce that hasn’t changed since 1948) is a true California staple. Toss in the photogenic intertwined palm trees out front and a not-so-secret menu making for endlessly personal modifications, and you’ve got a fast-food experience that always feels special. Notable: The founding Snyder family actually invented the two-way speakerbox, thus creating the modern drive-thru and forever changing the way we eat.

5. Taste Los Alamos

Santa Ynez Valley
Picture-perfect Los Alamos has risen to the top of the Central Coast food scene. The tiny town (pop. 12,019) boasts a main street bursting with flavor, including Bob’s Well Bread, an acclaimed bakery; Bell’s, a cozy California bistro run by New York City fine dining expats; and Full of Life Flatbread, a timeless home for local wine and wood-fired pizzas. This tiny idyll is minutes from some of the best wineries in the state, and still retains its rustic farm charm, despite being right off the freeway.

12 Best California Bites

6. Taco Trucks

Los Angeles
Local food trucks have a decades-old history in L.A., though hip newcomers like chef Roy Choi’s Kogi BBQ trace their roots back only a decade or so. Today, these colorfully painted rigs emerge from parking spots all across Southern California, making them an indelible part of both the dining and cultural landscape. No trip to L.A. is complete without a late-night run for tacos from a nearby truck. Every neighborhood has a few, though Tacos Leo in Mid-City and La Isla Bonita in Venice count themselves among L.A.’s best. Plan to spend $1 or $2 for carne asada or suadero tacos, and if you see carnitas on the menu, get it. Find even more tasty Southern California options with these taco recommendations from a food writer.

7. Santa Maria BBQ

Santa Maria Valley
Cooking over smoke and flame is a timeless human tradition with endless regional variability. On the Central Coast, that means leaner cuts like tri-tip and linguica sausage, a heritage that traces its roots back to the early vaqueros who traveled north through Mexico hundreds of years ago. This type of cooking is now known as Santa Maria–style BBQ, named after the picturesque valley in Santa Barbara County. There, weekend grills fill up fast with abundant red oak logs, particularly at places like Jocko’s in Nipomo, which sits conveniently next to a cattle-grazing area. For a truly retro version of this cuisine, head to Cold Spring Tavern in Santa Barbara—and prepare to wait in line with lots of locals.

8. Mission Burritos

San Francisco
One of San Francisco’s biggest culinary draws is found in the Mission District, home to the city’s signature burrito style. The thriving neighborhood is alive most nights with locals and tourists merged together en masse to enjoy places like La Taqueria or rival El Farolito, where famously overstuffed burritos come loaded with meat (usually carne asada), beans, rice, salsa, guacamole, cheese, and more. While the West Coast’s original burritos have a rich tradition that spans the length and history of California, these Mission-style treats are unique to the city, and a part of weekday lunch culture as well as the late-night food scene. Late food critic Jonathan Gold once called them “monstrous things wrapped in tinfoil.

9. Little Saigon

Garden Grove
Orange County is a haven for Disney devotees, beachgoers, and anyone interested in fantastic Vietnamese food. The Little Saigon district is a collection of restaurants and shops in The OC’s Garden Grove area, home to 200,000 Vietnamese people and enduring restaurants like Pho 79, winner of a 2019 James Beard Foundation Award for longstanding culinary excellence. Restaurants run the gamut from family banquet halls serving spring rolls to smaller spots specializing in regional delicacies like mi quang, the central Vietnamese noodle dish found at places like Ngu Binh Restaurant in Westminster.

10. Splurge on a Michelin Meal

Throughout California
Sometimes you just want to experience a blowout meal—and there are few places in the world that offer more options than California. In 2019 Michelin released its first-ever statewide guide, bestowing at least one coveted star on 90 restaurants, including spots in San Diego (Addison), Mendocino County (Harbor House), and Sacramento (The Kitchen). If you want to go all in and enjoy a three-star feast, the Golden State offers seven over-the-top options, including Thomas Keller’s Napa Valley flagship, The French Laundry, and Dominique Crenn’s San Francisco shrine, Atelier Crenn. Pro tips: Book weeks or months ahead of time, bring your wallet, and don’t eat a big lunch that day.

11. Roadside Produce

Throughout California
California car culture is the stuff of legend, with a winding jaunt along Highway 1 or a top-down trip to the mountains part of local lore. Often, the best part of the ride is an impromptu stop for roadside produce. Either at small family stands on the Central and Northern coasts or at more heralded destinations like Casa de Fruta in Hollister, just east of Gilroy. The 24-hour stand offers rows of locally grown, just-picked harvest. After all, a true California road trip isn’t complete without a pint of freshly cut fruit from a roadside vendor. Served with a shake of slightly spicy Tajín seasoning on top.

12. Dungeness Crab

Northern California
California’s coastline is a bounty that knows no bounds, and Dungeness crab has embedded itself into Northern California’s culture. The slightly sweet meat from this small crustacean is prized from mid-November through June, and you’ll find it on countless menus. Seek it out during the holiday season. As chefs crack open piles of crabs to make risottos, chowders, and crab cakes. The annual crabbing tradition not only helps keep fishing communities afloat. It also works wonders at area restaurants where diners line up for the local catch served over garlic noodles or with copious amounts of drawn butter.

Celebrate The Tricolour in Chic Ensembles This Independence Day

Each colour of the Indian Flag signifies different principles but when the colours saffron (courage). White (peace), green (fertility) and the Ashoka Chakra Blue (which signifies that there is life in movement and death in stagnation). Come together they create a sense of identity, which defines our country– India, best.

So, this 75th Independence Day, fashion designers Kunal Anil Tanna, Sana Barreja. And labels such as Pink City, Gulabo Jaipur, and House of Fett celebrate the tricolour through their respective creations. And tell us why the colours of the flag hold a special place in their creative space

‘Kesar is my spirit, Kesar is my soul’: PINK CITY BY SARIKA

For Sarika Kakrania, Kesar (saffron) is courage. All it took was courage to start a brand after being a stay-at-home mom for two decades. “The colour Kesar is the constant reminder of inner strength every woman must revel in. It is the strength I found in my life when I least expected it,” says Sarika Kakrania, founder, Pink City.

And to celebrate this feminine courage, label Pink City By Sarika uses the colour kesar in almost all its collections, because be it any season or any trend, confidence and strength never goes out of fashion.

‘Blue denotes royalty just like my country’: SANA BARREJA

independence day

India is rich in it many long-standing traditions, varied cultures, and overarching history and in the same way, fashion designer Sana Barreja believes that the colour blue is rich in its appearance and the vibe it exudes.

“Blue colour symbolises timeless elegance, which we try to further elevate with our heritage hand-embroideries and modern silhouettes. The colour brings a beautiful duality to any garment, uplifting the overall formal-ness of the piece while also keeping it eclectic and fun,” says fashion designer Sana Barreja.

‘White emotes tranquillity’: HOUSE OF FETT

independence day

For House of Fett, the sheer raw power that a colour shade exhibits can make you feel an array of diverse emotions. The tricolours of the Indian Flag blend together harmoniously to showcase cultural diversity and unity that India enjoys. Taking inspiration from the pristine white of the Indian flag, a part of

House of Fett’s SS21 collection is based upon the desire for new beginnings and hope for a future filled with peace and tranquillity.

‘Blue embodies a progressive vibe’: KUNAL ANIL TANNA

The National flag represents various attributes of our culturally rich motherland. Each colour stands for an emotion that signifies the deep-rooted history of our glorious nation.

For menswear designer Kunal Tanna, the most striking part of the national flag is the colour blue of the Ashoka Chakra. “I relate to it (blue). As it not only implies progress and growth but also symbolises the only constant of time – CHANGE. The National flag motivates us to understand that the best way forward is to adapt and move on. Being stagnant can only lead to eventually becoming insignificant. The blue Ashoka Chakra embodies the ever-progressive vibe of our roaring country India – Jai Hind,” expresses Kunal Tanna, founder of label Kunal Anil Tanna.

‘Green is an auspicious colour’: GULABO JAIPUR

Saloni Panwar, founder, Gulabo Jaipur believes that each colour is important in its own way and together they signify freedom. “It is a proud moment as we celebrate our country’s 75th Independence Day. For me, the colour green signifies fertility, and it is an auspicious colour,” says Saloni Panwar.

An athlete’s torment: ACL Injury

By Dr Kaushal Malhan, Director-Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mulund

If you’re a football fanatic, the sight of an athlete falling to the ground writhing in agony while holding onto their knee is pretty common. But did you know that one of the leading causes is a significant ligament tear, making an individual scream in pain?

The particular part in question here is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), one of the two cruciate ligaments in the knee area that provide knee stability. It is an essential structure in one’s body connecting the Femur (thigh bone) to the Tibia (shinbone of the lower leg) through the middle of the knee joint.

The ACL is about 1 to 1.5inches long and about 10 mm wide. It prevents the Tibia from moving forward on the Femur, thus holding the leg together and keeping the knee rotationally stable.

ACL Tear:

What happens in an ACL tear immediately is a popping sound in the knee followed by intense pain, throbbing and severe swelling. When the soreness subsides, the injured person can walk; however, the knee might give away, losing steadiness, causing the individual to fall.

Causes of ACL injuries:

ACL injury is common amongst footballers, gymnasts, soccer & basketball players, etc. It frequently happens in fast-paced and high-impact sports. Non-contact injuries occur when the player plants a foot on the ground, puts all the body weight on it and tries to rotate. The ACL, if unable to bear the immense force from motion, ruptures with the pop sound. This is also known as ‘cutting and pivoting footwork’ in sports.

A growing health concern for the athletes:

With significant sports tournaments taking place worldwide after a year of hiatus due to the pandemic, athletes are training hard to return to the field again. Overall a lot of conversations are ongoing around a professional player’s well-being. Recently, one of the most serious risks they face, the ACL injury, is gaining further prominence.

It’s been just a month since Italy faced off England in a much-awaited Euro 2020 final. One of the youngest talented Italian players, Nicolo Zaniolo, suffered ACL injuries on both his legs preventing him from playing in the mega championship. Despite starting light training, Dutch player and captain of the national football team, Virgil Van Dijk had to sit out Euro 2020 because of his ACL tear.

This year, Spanish badminton champion, Carolina Marin had to pull out of Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 due to an ACL tear in her left knee. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, she won against India’s P.V. Sindhu for the gold medal. These are just three athletes who have suffered a knee injury. Every year approximately, 2 million players have an ACL tear.

Female or male athletes, who are at a higher risk?

According to a Yale medicine study, female athletes are more prone to ACL tear than their male counterparts. The reason for the same is unclear, but experts suggest it is because of the difference in anatomy. Women have a broader pelvis that puts additional stress on the soft tissues supporting the joints. Multiple other research inferences have supported the above reason.

Other comorbiditiesACL injuries often affect a chunk of an athlete’s career, and sometimes even surgery cannot guarantee their return to the sport. There are possibilities of a re-tear after recovering. Recent studies have also determined that those who suffer ACL tear eventually develop Arthritis in the knee if not treated adequately.

Apart from this, ACL reconstruction surgery can bring changes in the brain structure, leading to a  lapse in the player’s performance. The brain alters its communication to the body, joints, muscles and changes the organ’s overall functioning mechanism. This happens post-surgery to adapt to the changes in the body. Hence, medical practitioners should focus on reviving swift movement in the knee and re-wiring the brain for smooth functioning.

Surgery and rehabilitationThe torn ligament is replaced with a tendon graft harvested from the patient. However, the crucial part lies in post-operation rehabilitation for satisfactory recovery. There are non-surgical treatment procedures as well, but those are for less active patients. Generally, young athletes require surgical reconstruction.

PreventionThere are no absolute ways to prevent an ACL injury; it can happen to an athlete anytime in training or playing a match. Knee braces can provide increased stability to the player. Specific exercises which focus on strengthening, balance and stability can prove to be helpful
