Why Is Exercise Important For CKD Patients?

Simple exercises can help improve the health of patients with Chronic Kidney Diseases. Many patients with Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKD) are less physically active and have reduced physical functioning and performance compared to the ones that don’t suffer from this. However, strong research suggests that exercise interventions have the potential to boost several health parameters and outcomes in CKD patients.

Constant fatigue and muscle weakness, people with Chronic Kidney disease (CKD) have low levels of physical activity. The decrease in physical volume in this patient cohort is notable as it is associated with deconditioning and muscle wasting, deteriorating kidney function, and an increased risk of comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, thus reducing the quality of life, frequent hospitalizations, and mortality.

Now that we know why exercise is important for CKD patients, let’s also understand what the meaning of exercise is. Exercise is defined as a planned, structured, and repetitive bodily movement to boost or maintain the desired shape. An example of this might be a 30-minute walk that improves aerobic fitness over time. While we all know that an inactive lifestyle could even be a strong risk factor for poor heart health, and exercise is useful to pump up overall health and reduce cardiovascular risk. In the past, the understanding was that vigorous physical activity is additionally harmful to those individuals with CKD, but it’s likely partially because of these beliefs that these patients show a scarcity of participation in exercise activities. However, CKD patients must follow an exercise program that’s designed to intensify the advantages and minimize the risks.

Research conducted over the last few decades has shown countless health benefits of regular exercise in patients with CKD. Some of the key benefits include increased physical fitness and muscle strength; prevention of muscle wasting; improvement in cardiovascular health; improved nutritional parameters; and a reduction of chronic inflammation. Physiological benefits are not all, exercise also improves the quality of life and has also shown psychological benefits such as decreases in anxiety, stress, and depression in CKD patients.

However, patients with CKD should bear in mind their physical activity limits and stop exercising after they feel tired, struggling to gasp for breath, sick, or dizzy. Other danger signals might include pain, muscle cramps, or a racing heartbeat. Additionally, exercise therapy should be stopped if the patient encompasses a fever, experiences worsening of symptoms, or has another health condition that becomes worse with exercise.

Patients with CKD should be encouraged to participate in regular physical activity. They all need various styles of exercise training that including:

Aerobic exercise training like walking, swimming, or cycling
Strength training
Resistance training
Flexibility training

The latest Nephrosis Improving Global Outcomes Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation and Management of Chronic nephrosis lifestyle section recommends that individuals with CKD engage in physical activity for a minimum of half-hour per day, 5 times per week. Therefore, increasing physical activity is an essential aspect of disease prevention and management in CKD patients

1. I have oily skin and black marks on my face. Please give me natural solutions.

Are the black marks due to pimples? Mix rice powder with curd and use it as a facial scrub once or twice a week. Apply on the face and rub gently on the skin with tiny circular movements, especially on the black marks. Leave on for a few minutes and then wash off with water. Do not apply on pimples. Twice a week, apply a face mask. Mix 3 teaspoons of oats with one teaspoon each of honey, curd, lemon juice or egg white. Apply on the entire face, avoiding the lips and area around eyes. Wash it off after half an hour. Or, mix multani mitti with rose water and lemon juice into a paste and apply the same way. Wash it off when it is dry. Clinical Veg Peel treatments are available.

2. I don’t use conditioners, because I feel they are harmful. Is there any other way of keeping my hair soft and silky?

Conditioners coat the hair and provide protection. They are useful for dry and unmanageable hair. Creamy conditioners should not be applied on oily or dandruff prone hair. Henna is a natural conditioner. You can also use a hair rinse to add shine and soften the hair. Add a handful of fresh or dried marigold flowers to three cups of hot water. Allow it to stand for an hour. Strain and cool the water and use as a final rinse. Or, have tea-water and lemon rinse. Boil used tea leaves again in enough water. After boiling, you should have about 4 to 5 cups of tea-water. Cool and strain it. Then add the juice of a lemon and use it as a last rinse after shampoo.

3. I want glowing and radiant skin like film stars. So, what should I do?

Use rose water daily to tone the skin. Keep it in a bowl in the fridge and soak cotton wool pads in it. First use them to wipe the skin. Then, pat the skin briskly with the rosewater-soaked cotton wool pads. Use a facial scrub twice a week. You can buy a facial scrub. They are easily available. Or, mix ground almonds with yogurt. Dried and powdered lemon and orange peels can also be added. Dry and powdered mint (pudina) leaves also help to add a glow. Apply on the face and rub gently on the skin with small circular movements. Wash off with water.

If Kim Jones’ Couture debut traced his transition from England to Rome, then Autumn/Winter 2021 sees him settle in the Eternal City, where the poetics of Roman film director Pier Paolo Pasolini present a lens through which to explore the capital. “Rome is a fascinating city because it has so many pasts – and I was drawn to Pasolini because I have always been inspired by his vision of the world,” explains Jones. “He is something of an outsider in Roman history, but one whose voice remains constant.”

Pasolini’s perspective on reality is reflected and refracted throughout, with chapters of Rome’s history interwoven and addressed within a contemporary context. In a collection where nothing is quite as it seems, where forms and fabrics introduce infinite illusions, filmmaker Luca Guadagnino frames the show through his own understanding of Pasolini. “I have long admired Luca’s work – and he is someone who, like Pasolini, touches on subjects which are relevant to now,” says Jones. “When a historian peers into history, they do it directly,” Guadagnino explains. “But when a master filmmaker and poet like Pasolini looks into the eyes of history, his gaze is a sublimating one. Through it, history becomes an urgent and delicate possession of now… the past enters the present and breathes our air.”
