Antibodies will not safeguard you against COVID19 re-infection! It’s not your ‘immunity passport’

By Dr Anita Mathew

About ten months after the 1st case of COVID19 was confirmed in Kasaragod, Kerala on February 3, 2020, we still have a lot to learn about the novel Coronavirus. While our country’s tally of COVID19 tally currently stands at9.88million, the concerns about re-infection loom large. Much research is required to understand how long the antibodies developed after a recent COVID19 infection will protect a person, if at all – and are the antibodies even strong enough to fight a re-infection?

The question ‘whether one can be re-infected with COVID-19’ was answered in August 2020 when a 33-year-old man from Hong Kong was infected by the same virus a second time! This was followed by another case of re-infection of a 25-year-old man from the United States. While these case studies are yet to be peer reviewed, they bring clarity that re-infection is a reality. After these global developments, it was noted that if SARS-CoV-2 (virus that causes COVID-19), follows the footsteps of other pre-existing Coronaviruses, reinfection will be common-and will not remain to be a one off case study.

Now if COVID-19 re-infection becomes the ‘new normal’, will it follow the path of common viruses that give you cold every year as the season changes? If so, one must understand one key difference between the two – seasonal cold is not fatal, COVID19 can be, and can have a devastating & long-lasting impact!

Researchers across the globe continue to state that the life and strength of antibodies needs to be studied deeply; this would require conducting large studies with wider range of people who have recently recovered from COVID19. Closer to home, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is studying the re-infection episodes among those who have been treated for COVID19. While more data driven facts are awaited, it needs to be understood that we cannot take antibodies for granted; they do not make for an ‘immunity passport’ as World Health Organization (WHO) aptly put it.

Now that it has been clarified that there is no fact-based understanding about the ability of our antibodies in fighting off a COVID19 re-infection, let’s talk about the next phase of beating the virus – vaccination. There’s need to take a closer look at how the vaccine deployment program will progress, how soon each of us will get the jab, and why it is important to get vaccinated.

The rollout:Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), India, recently released detailed guidelines about mass vaccination that will commence once a regulatory board approved vaccine gets the authorization

The priority: While this vaccine may be made available for emergency use, the in phase 1 rollout is aimed at healthcare workers, frontline workers, people over 50yrs, and those under 50yrs with comorbidities

Why get vaccinated?:Getting a COVID19 vaccine may prevent you from getting seriously ill even if you do get infected, and it will protect people around you, particularly those at high risk!

Now we know re-infection is real; so while we wait for the regulator approved COVID19 vaccines, lets continue to safeguard ourselves and our loved ones – it may be a few months before you get the jab if you don’t fall under the aforesaid category. Stay safe, positive, and if you’ve been infected before, don’t take antibodies for granted!

Young Indians bringing in 2021 with Positivity & Hope

Year 2020, the year of Pandemic, brought us closer to LIFE. Our perceptions changed, habits changed, and even the entire outlook towards life changed.  We have evolved as human beings, more empathetic towards others fellow beings, animals and environment.

The meaning of celebrations, happiness, togetherness, all changed for good and we all are looking forward to 2021 with more positivity, hope and promise to be good and do good.

Let’s take a look at what young Indians have learnt from the year 2020 and what are there resolutions for the year 2021.

Artist Swati Pasari

As an artist and moreover, as a person, I believe in spirituality and am an immensely positive person. I draw inspiration from the positive aura around me and paint to connect myself spiritually to the power above me. As a person, I look forward to 2021 with more positivity. 2020 has been difficult for most of us and affected us in more than one ways. However, I am hopeful about 2021.

I would like to concentrate more on my artwork and explore other realms of creativity and techniques. I plan to work more closely with charitable trusts as I firmly believe we must all stand up together to support each other to ensure the New Year is a happy and prosperous one for each and every one. My new year resolution is definitely to be more positive and spread positivity around through my art and my actions and I urge each and everyone to do the same.

Designer Savi Abbot

This year has been tough, but let these unprecedented times not take away the joy of celebrating life. This year 2020 has made us appreciate what truly matters- Family, love and health of course.

And also the enormous value of the present. It’s made us grateful for all the time spent with our loved ones- something we might have taken for granted in the past. I am going to enjoy every moment and be grateful for the company of my loved ones for the rest of my life.

Also, I would like to extend my support to homegrown brands and small businesses and help them lead a sustainable life.

Blogger Divya Bhatia

Eagerly looking forward to 2021, in this new year I wish to have a deep understanding of my true worth and instead of resolutions I will be making more habits.

Habit of eating more healthy and keeping only weekends as a cheat day, complaining less and resorting to a simple activity of asking before making any presumptions, working out regularly not only to lose weight but also for my overall well being, doing that long awaited phone call to one old friend every week and definitely decluttering my house which means buying less and recycling/ reusing more.

Hoping for a habit wali 2021.

 Designer Tuhina Mehrotra

Well, what a year 2020 has been. From a global pandemic, protests, online learning and remote work, describing 2020 in just a word or two seems like a very daunting task. With terms such as quarantine, social distancing and Zoom parties, it seems like our everyday lexicon will forever be changed.

However we are all waiting for the year to end and are hoping that 2021 will be better in all aspects.

And about work, we have learned how to manage everything just from home and online. So that hurdle is already passed. Having said that, my resolution for 2021 would be, to be more optimistic and accept all the challenges with more grace.

Make an At-home Mani-pedi appointment with yourself

By Anita Golani, founder of iORA, a DIY Salon-Kit Series.

Taking some time off for yourself and indulging in a pampering session is the present need! As our lives were already stressful and chaotic, to begin with. The current WFH scenario has dialled it up even more! While frequent zoom calls and the intertwined office/house schedules churn you up, we suggest you TAKE A BREATHER!

How about you find your ‘Calm’ or rather create one by preferring a luxurious Mani-Pedi session – DIY Style!

Here’s how you can de-stress and revive back to reality after a much-needed indulgence. Are you ready ladies?

So, before we even begin,

–          Please try to side-lineall your work-related bits,

–          Put your phone on silent,

–          Play your favourite soulful music,& just relax!

Start by gathering all the products that you need so you enjoy your me-time without any fuss.

Step 1 – Begin with trimming, filling, and cleaning your nails thoroughly in your desired way. Once done, clean them with lukewarm water and a soft cleanser. Complete this step by applying a cuticle cream or moisturizer for nourishing your cuticles.

Step 2 – Soak your hands and feet in warm salt water (you can also use relaxing bath salts). This will allow your muscles/nerves to relax and will also get rid of dirt if any.

Step 3 – Grab your favourite body scrub and exfoliate your hands and feet by massaging it in a circular motion. Doing this, will exfoliate all the dead skin cells of your body and provide nourishment to the cleansed skin. Wash it off once done.

Note – Do not over-exfoliate! Use gentle motions and pressure. Exfoliate only for 3-4 mins.

Step 4 – Time for BUTTA! (we mean butter, ignore our fancy accent) Apply a body butter or a super hydrating moisturizer. Massage it religiously to achieve that supple and plumpy skin.

And Voila! It was as simple as that! Who said self-care is a super fancy or tedious task?

Perform such Manicure-Pedicure sessions once every 15 days and reminisce your salon feels. This beauty therapy will boost your mental health, helping you de-stress and take a back seat from work calls.

So, what are you waiting for, go get you charged up for your everyday battles!
