Eating right is a critical step to ward off illness

3 Vitamins: Best Source for Boosting Your Immunity

by Rishubh Satiya

The old saying, “An apple a day can keep the doctor away,” may have truth behind it after all. Eating nourishing foods rich in certain vitamins can help your immune system fight off illness.

  1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the biggest immune system boosters of all. In fact, a lack of vitamin C can even make you more prone to getting sick. Foods rich in vitamin C include oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, strawberries, bell peppers, spinach, kale and broccoli. Daily intake of vitamin C is essential for good health because your body doesn’t produce or store it. The good news is that vitamin C is in so many foods that most people don’t need to take a vitamin C supplement unless a doctor advises it.

  1. Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is vital to supporting biochemical reactions in the immune system. Vitamin B6-rich foods include chicken and cold-water fish such as salmon and tuna. Vitamin B6 also is found in green vegetables and in chickpeas, which is the main ingredient in hummus.

  1. Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps the body fight off infection. Foods rich in vitamin E include nuts, seeds and spinach.

How to grocery shop to boost your immunity

A simple rule can help you when choosing fruits and vegetables at the grocery store or farmers market: The more colourful the fruits and vegetables are the better. But there are times when we tend to lose out the vitamins and minerals of the vegetables when we over cook them or while cleaning them. Hence you can also opt for Vitamin supplements that help you to maintain the level of intake your body require further strengthening your immune system.

Try to eat a wide variety of foods, and aim to eat fruit and vegetables from every colour of the rainbow. Your plate will be more enticing to look at, and you will ensure that you’re getting as many health-boosting vitamins and nutrients as possible.

It’s also important to know that you build a strong immune system by maintaining healthy eating habits over time. You can’t eat four oranges at breakfast and expect to be protected that day against catching a cold.

Pro tip – Staying hydrated can boost your immune health too. Water helps your body produce lymph, which carries white blood cells and other immune system cells. Try to avoid overdoing beverages that can make you dehydrated, like coffee. Or try eating more hydrating foods, such as cucumbers, celery or watermelon.

Valued in Gold: Mumbai MP honours COVID warriors in gold coins

MP Gopal Shetty felicitates 30 COVID warriors with gold coins, ₹5000 cash

The COVID crisis, which is fast engulfing northern Mumbai in its throes, has already consumed 4896 precious lives. During this situation, our COVID warriors, who put their very lives at stake to serve the ailing public, deserve a special vote of thanks. Mumbai MP Gopal Shetty has attempted to deliver this appreciation to 30 COVID warriors, gifting them ₹5000 cash and a gold coin weighing 1 gram. These warriors include security guards, sanitation workers and administrative.

The Satra Park Cooperative Housing Society organised the felicitation ceremony in Borivali, Mumbai and Shetty, the parliamentarian for North Mumbai, presided over the event as its chief guest. He also inaugurated a COVID care centre that the society had set up within its premises. This centre has a capacity of 12 patients.

“I aim to ensure that all of us contribute our efforts in every way possible, during this COVID crisis. I also hope that these positive efforts will guide us collectively on a path away from our current situation”, said Gopal Shetty, the MP from North Mumbai.

Shetty had appealed to the Mumbai administration, seeking approval for private housing societies to develop COVID care centres within their compounds. “I am grateful that the administration has agreed to this demand and am seeing many societies step forward and take the necessary steps to develop these centres”, added Shetty.

The area’s legislator Sunil Rane was also present at the event.

Shetty has taken up many causes to help those in need during the coronavirus pandemic in the city. A month ago, he had partnered with former minister Dr Deepak Sawant to inaugurate a COVID care centre in Pawandham, Mahavir Nagar in Kandivali. The centre has six doctors, 8 RMOs and 50 nursing staff, alongside necessary medical equipment like X-ray machines, ECG machines, cylinders with liquid oxygen and monitoring equipment. Jain spiritual leader Namramuni Maharaj had blessed the centre, set up in the premises of a Jain temple.

Since then, this centre, which provides free medical care, has helped 325 patients so far, with 200 of them recovering from the dreaded disease. Out of these 325, 22 patients are still at the centre, while the conditions for two have worsened to critical care and ventilator support.

He has also helped to organise an additional beds in COVID wards for the Miti Life hospital, Rustomjee, Dahisar (47 beds), Punjabi Galli, Borivali west (120 beds), ESIC hospital (250 beds) and Bhagwati hospital (80 beds).

“By boosting the infrastructure for these hospitals, we’re ensuring rapid, round the clock medical care for people in Northern Mumbai during the current COVID crisis. Apart from private hospitals, people can visit these centres for affordable and timely healthcare avenues”, Shetty added.

Shetty has received support from multiple NGOs, including the IBIF Cooperative Society, Ekta Meadows Society, Jai Cooperative Housing Society, Biplex Habitat Cooperative Housing Society, Kandivali Vishdeep Society, Tilak Complex, Gurukul Society and Sita Park society.

Ravindra Jain

Fans Demand for Bharat Ratna

If there’s one person who was, is and will remain exemplary in the Music Industry it is Late Music Composer cum Singer Ravindra Jain. The renowned music composer overcame his lifelong blindness and earned himself fame and fandom, memories of which are still etched in the minds of music lovers! But there’s a sudden new surge of love that’s stirred among Ravindra Jain’s fans after the airing of ‘90s popular mythological shows Ramayan and Jai Shree Krishna, so much so, that the fans now want the Late composer/singer to be awarded with the prestigious Bharat Ratna Award.

Ravindra Jain who was awarded with Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India in 2015 for his contribution to arts has the credit of countless hits and classic numbers to his credit. His works include Saudagar, Chor Machaye Shor, Chitchor, Geet Gaata Chal, Fakira, Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se, Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaye, Paheli, Do Jasoos, Pati Patni Aur Woh, Insaf Ka Tarazu, Nadiya Ke Paar, Ram Teri Ganga Maili and Henna. The late veteran star has not only made his mark in music, but also has been behind many literary works such as writing his own iteration of the Ramayan, the Geeta, the Quran and also Jain texts like Bal Bodh. While Ravindra Ramayan and Dil Ki Nazar Se (a book of ghazals) have already been released to the public by publishers Prabhat Prakashan, the Geeta and the Quran are soon to be released as well. He has also received a doctorate from Mahavir Jain University, Moradabad where he was given the title by Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam sahab.

He also composed and sung some of the really popular songs in Ramanand Sagar’s mytho-dramas Ramayan and Jai Shree Krishna which even after his passing away during 2015 are lilting fans who won’t stop championing the idea of getting Jain awarded the Bharat Ratna.

Even Arun Govil, the actor who breathed life into the role of Ram says he is grateful for the music of Ravindra Jain, “His music was like Sanjeevani for our show Ramayan. Had it not been for his songs, the story of Ramayan wouldn’t have moved ahead as beautifully as it did.” The show Ramayan currently has over 77 million views on YouTube!

Talking about this current phenomenon, Deevya Jain, wife of Late Ravindra Jain says, “Jain saab’s popularity never ceases to exist. I keep a check on his YouTube page and even after this death, fans keep asking for more tracks to be released on the channel, even his older ones and the comments and reactions on his page have increased manifold after Ramanand Sagar Ji’s shows started airing again. The tracks “Hum katha sunate hain”, “Mangal bhawan amangal hari” or even “Shri Krishna Govind Hare Murari” are getting millions of views with comments stating people cried listening to these songs.”

It is rightly said, an artist may die but his art will live forever, and similar is the story of Ravindra Jain who is gaining popularity all over again with the songs he composed in the ‘90s. Talking about the requests of Fans to Ravindra Ji to get Bharat Ratna award, Deevya says, “It would be pompous of me to make such demands or requests but it’s the fans saying all this and that means a lot. Though, somewhere I do agree with Jain saab’s fans, not as a wife but just as a music lover who has rejoiced in the works of Jain saab.”

Lockdown Mandi

Swaroop Bhalwankar’s Single

Singer and composer Swaroop Bhalwankar’s latest song ‘Lockdown Mandi’ has been appreciated by masses and is also available on his Youtube channel. The song was composed thinking of the current situation and what kind of issues a couple goes through when they are confined to the four walls of a house. The single is directed by Jagmeet Bal, who has directed many singles and features actor Jimmy Moses in it.

Swaroop said, “The lockdown has put us all in precarious situations and I felt that there was a need to compose a song, which brings a smile to people’s faces in these difficult times. We have brought in the chemistry and issues between a husband and wife in the song. We shot the single in my own bungalow. The pandemic has brought in many sad news and situations and the idea behind this song was to push people into a light-hearted zone. I have sung the song in a comical way and it has dance and comedy, too.”

Swaroop added, “In the last three months, I have worked on four songs. The first one was Yeh din bhi dhalenge which was released by T-series, and before Lockdown Mandi, I worked on Vitthal Abhang, which will release on July 1. Vitthal Abhang revolves around Maharashtrians, who travel to Pandharpur during these months to the temple of Lord Vitthal. In the video, we have created an ambience of the entire ‘Abhang Vitthala Roop’. But, I enjoyed composing and singing Lockdown Mandi the most because it portrays my versatility in how I can sing different songs.”
