From its historical landmarks and scenic state parks to bustling wineries and cultural festivals, Virginia caters to a range of interests while promoting green initiatives. The state has also embraced sustainability across various industries, encouraging visitors to engage with its eco-friendly destinations.
This year, the Virginia Green Travel Alliance has honored the most outstanding examples of sustainable tourism with the 2024 Virginia Green Travel Star & Leader Awards. These accolades highlight the exceptional efforts of tourism operators and partners in promoting environmental stewardship across the state.
Spotlight on Old Bust Head Brewing Company
A highlight of this year’s awards is Old Bust Head Brewing Company in Vint Hill, which has been recognized as the 2024 “Green Brewery of the Year” and received the “People’s Choice Award” from the Virginia Green Travel Alliance. This independent, solar-powered microbrewery has been praised for its strong commitment to environmental sustainability. Old Bust Head’s dedication to eco-friendly practices includes a 100-kilowatt solar array that powers half of its brewing operations, making it a leader in solar energy use among microbreweries in the region. The brewery also employs geothermal heating and cooling systems, energy-efficient brewing techniques, and CO2 recapture technology. Its efforts extend to water conservation, LED lighting, and a “reduce, reuse, recycle” approach that repurposes spent grain in collaboration with local farms. Beyond its operational sustainability, Old Bust Head supports over 150 nonprofit organizations and environmental initiatives, such as The American Chestnut Foundation and The Land Trust of Virginia.
Green Efforts Across Virginia
Several other notable attractions were celebrated at this year’s awards:
- Nauticus: Named Green Attraction of the Year, this waterfront destination in downtown Norfolk offers interactive exhibits and educational programs about maritime history, industry, and military, featuring the museum, Battleship Wisconsin, sailing center, and Schooner Virginia.
- Natural Bridge State Park: Awarded Green Park of the Year, this park is known for its stunning 200-foot Natural Bridge and lush forests. It offers hiking trails and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and James River valley.
- Rocklands Barbeque & Grilling Company: Recognized as Green Restaurant of the Year, this Arlington eatery emphasizes sustainable practices in its operations.
- Jam Packed Craft Beer & Music Festival: Honored as Green Event of the Year, this Richmond festival supports the James River Association’s vision for a healthy James River, benefiting the local ecosystem and community.
Other notable Virginia Green Travel Leader Award winners include the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, Birdsong Pleasure Garden, and Busch Gardens Williamsburg & Water Country USA for their ongoing sustainability efforts.

With over 1,200 certified green businesses and partners, the 2024 award recipients set an inspiring example for both tourists and industry professionals, encouraging a collective effort towards a more sustainable future.
