Ways to Deal with Anxiety

By Sanjana Bafna Ranka

We all have been anxious at some point of time in our life. It is a patterned response to a stressful situation. Facing the first viva, talking to our crush, stage performances, interviews, etc could trigger anxiety. But it turns out to be a predicament whilst it becomes intense and pertinacious, meddling with normal functioning.

When does anxiety become a disorder?

An anxious feeling can be recuperated with some persuasion and perseverance from us. It wanes-off once the situation is dealt with. But anxiety disorder disrupts the normal functioning of our day to day life. It is not a triggered response, but a persistent counteraction. Sometimes, crossing the road, getting into elevator, meeting your boss even could make us anxious and that is when we need to be more concerned.

  • The rapid increase in heart rate.
  • Perspiration.
  • Difficulty in concentrating.
  • Restlessness and confusion

Physical issues like,

  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Skin disorders
  • Feeling weak.

Ways to deal with anxiety:

Breath: Breathing exercises, pranayama can have instantaneous and indelible impact on anxiety. Practising mindful breathing and pranayama increases oxygen supply to our body and calms our nervous system.

Exercise: Regular yoga and exercise is another way to stimulate and relaxes our brain, helping us deal with any situation in a blissful manner.

Write it off: When some situation triggers anxiety in us, writing it on a piece of paper and tearing it off can have an immediate calming effect.

While the above could ease us momentarily, we need to seek an incessant remedy to anxiety.

Stimulants: We need to figure out our stimulants to be able to deal with it. It could be insignificant ones like smoking or drinking, or it could also be greater ones like work-related stress, trauma, abuse, or even genetics. Once we have figured it out, we need to act upon it with due diligence to get over it.

Meditation: Again, meditation and breathing exercises relieve us from chronic situations as well. These routines will definitely have a long-term impact by calming us and training our brains to act placidly.

Diet: Diet plays an important role in anxiety triggers. Taking balanced diet following professional advice can help ease the symptoms.

Therapies: If the anxiety is because of long-held traumas, phobias or if they are genetic, therapies like EFT can go a long way in healing them, reaching the root of the issue.

Accept: Anxiety spurs from being anxious about what could happen next. When we are ready to accept things which are not in our control, we will be able to manage anxiety in an efficient way.

Fear and anxiety can refrain us from being our true self. Healing them and getting over it as soon as possible is inevitable to live our life to the fullest.
