NIF Global Brings the Next Generation of Fashion Talent to Lakmé Fashion Week With ‘The Runway’

With 44 student-designed looks exploring the modern professional wardrobe and actress Tejasswi Prakash as the showstopper, NIF Global put emerging design talent in the spotlight at Lakmé Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI.

What does the modern professional wardrobe look like today? At Lakmé Fashion Week in partnership with the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), NIF Global offered 44 interpretations of the question through The Runway, a showcase of student-designed fashion presented at Taj Palace, New Delhi. Centered on the theme The Modern Professional, the presentation explored contemporary workwear through functionality, individuality, and fresh approaches to everyday dressing.

Adding a star moment to the showcase, actress Tejasswi Prakash walked the runway as the showstopper, bringing an added spotlight to the students’ designs. Her appearance marked a highlight of the presentation, which placed emerging creative talent on a professional fashion platform and gave students the opportunity to see their work move from concept to runway.

Rather than treating workwear as a fixed set of wardrobe staples, the showcase invited students to consider how professional dressing continues to evolve alongside changing lifestyles and personal style. Across the 44 selected garments, the focus was on translating classroom learning into finished designs that could be presented in a professional setting.

The Modern Professional: A New Perspective on Workwear

The modern work wardrobe is no longer defined by a single silhouette or dress code. Comfort, versatility, and individual expression increasingly inform the way people approach professional dressing, creating room for designers to rethink familiar conventions.

Through The Modern Professional, NIF Global’s fashion design students explored these changing expectations, presenting different interpretations of how clothing can balance functionality with personal style. Each garment reflected an individual approach to form, practicality, and contemporary design.

An eminent jury selected the 44 garments for the showcase, after which the looks underwent further development through professional styling. The process gave students an opportunity to refine their designs for the runway while experiencing the decisions involved in presenting a collection to a wider audience.

For the participating designers, The Runway represented more than a fashion presentation. It offered a chance to understand how an initial idea develops into a finished garment and how styling, presentation, and collaboration shape the way a design is ultimately seen.

From the Classroom to the Runway

A professional fashion show involves far more than the clothes themselves. Design development, garment preparation, styling, coordination, and presentation all contribute to the final result. By bringing students into this environment, NIF Global gave them firsthand exposure to the creative and technical demands of a live runway showcase.

The initiative reflects the institution’s emphasis on industry-integrated learning, where practical experience complements academic training. Presenting work at an established fashion event allows students to engage with professional standards and understand how their ideas translate beyond the classroom.

Speaking about the showcase, Tisha Khosla, Author and Creative Educator at NIF Global Corporate, said:

“The Runway this season celebrated the creativity and diversity of student talent from across India, brought together through the theme ‘The Modern Professional.’ With 44 garments selected by an eminent jury, the show presented diverse interpretations of contemporary workwear, individuality, and functionality. Each selected look was further developed with professional styling to make it runway-ready, giving our young designers an invaluable opportunity to experience the journey from concept and creation to the fashion runway. It was exciting to see their ideas come alive on one of India’s most prominent fashion platforms.”

Industry Exposure Takes Center Stage

The opportunity to present student work within a professional fashion setting also underscores the importance of connecting design education with the wider industry.

Sunil Sethi, Chairman of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), emphasized the role of industry exposure in preparing young designers for professional practice. He noted that The Runway gave students the opportunity to present their work in a professional environment while experiencing the preparation, discipline, and collaboration required for a fashion showcase.

Jaspreet Chandok, Group Vice President at Reliance Brands Limited, similarly highlighted the importance of creating meaningful opportunities for emerging talent. He described the collaboration with NIF Global as part of a shared commitment to helping young designers take their first steps into the fashion industry, moving their ideas from an academic setting to a professional platform.

Together, these perspectives reinforce the value of initiatives that give students practical experience while introducing fresh creative voices to the Indian fashion landscape.

Beyond The Runway: NIF Global’s Continued Support for Emerging Talent

NIF Global’s association with Lakmé Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI extends beyond its student showcase. The institution also presents NIF Global Presents GenNext, a platform supporting emerging designers as they establish their presence within the fashion industry.

The two initiatives serve different stages of the creative journey. The Runway gives students the opportunity to present their work in a professional setting, while GenNext provides a platform for emerging labels to introduce their design philosophies to the wider fashion community.

Headquartered in New York, with centers across India, NIF Global draws on perspectives from New York’s fashion industry, London’s design landscape, and India’s cultural heritage. Its programs span fashion design, interior design, management, and beauty education, with an emphasis on practical learning and industry engagement.

By participating in fashion platforms in India and internationally, students have opportunities to gain exposure to different approaches to design and presentation, helping them better understand the professional environment they are preparing to enter.

A First Step Toward Fashion’s Future

With 44 student-designed garments and Tejasswi Prakash closing the showcase as its showstopper, The Runway brought together student creativity, professional styling, and the experience of presenting fashion before an industry audience.

The significance of the presentation extended beyond its final walk. It gave young designers an opportunity to test their ideas in a professional setting, understand the collaborative nature of a fashion show, and begin translating their education into practice.

At Lakmé Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI, NIF Global’s The Runway offered a look at how the next generation is approaching contemporary workwear, while underscoring the importance of giving emerging talent room to experiment, develop, and find its own point of view.
