Essential Oils for Fighting Virus

Keep your immune system healthy and strong with nature’s best-kept secret

The massive outbreak of new coronavirus (COVID- 19) last year in Wuhan, China has caused a pandemic. Coronavirus has spread rapidly leading to an increase in death tolls, chaos and stress. The coronavirus attacks the respiratory system, which starts with fever and dry cough led by shortness of breath and after that hospitalization. The virus weakens the immune system, makes the body vulnerable and prone to infections, leading to death.

Preventing the spread of this outbreak requires a massive global effort, but more importantly, it requires one’s action to build a strong immune system. Dr. Blossom Kochhar, a pioneer in Aromatherapysuggests eating healthy food, getting enough sleep, exercise, meditation, and do yoga to build strong immunity. Here are some tips from Dr. Kochhar to keep your immune system healthy and strong.

‘Essential oils are nature’s best-kept secret’ says Dr Kochhar. The essential oils are botanical extracts of various plant materials such as flowers, herb, roots, leaves, etc. Some of the essential oils due to their natural qualities help to build immunity, ease symptoms and disinfect. These oils exhibit anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. Some of the essential oils which can be used are:

Eucalyptus: Dr. Kochhar suggests that this is the best essential oil against coronavirus. As the virus attacks the respiratory system, this oil is known for its ability to treat respiratory ailments. One can take 4-5 drops of oil rub it on the chest, throat, use it in a diffuser or bathwater.

Lavender: ‘Fear creates stress which can lead to low immunity’ says Dr. Kochhar. Lavender helps to reduce anxiety, stress, and insomnia. Use 4-5 drops of Lavender on the palms, rub it on the stomach, use it in a diffuser or bathwater.

Rosemary: Rosemary gives respiratory relief and peps one up. Use 4-5 drops of rosemary and rub it on the chest. One can also use it in a diffuser, bathwater or can be inhaled via steam.

Thyme: Thyme exhibitsstrong antiseptic and is an anti-microbial agent for respiratory conditions. Use 4-5 drops of Basil on the stomach, use it in a diffuser or bathwater.

Basil: Basil also known as Krishna Tulsi helps to build strong immunity. It also helps to soothe respiratory conditions. Use 4-5 drops of basil along with a carrier oil on the chest and throat. One can also use it in a diffuser or bathwater. Krishna tulsi tea and Basil tincture can also be used and sipped regularly.

Other supportive essential oils which can be used are Tea tree and Fennel.

Dr. Kochhar also suggests other natural products like Lemon,Turmeric, Ashwagandha and Indian gooseberry (Amla)  which can be used during the day to day activities that can keep the immune system healthy and strong.
