This tribute will feature an exceptionally unique concept ‘Samyuktam- We are United’ – bringing for the first time two dancing divas together with an amalgamation of Bharatanatyam by Rukmini Vijayakumar and Kathak by Vidha Lal.
The event in honour of the unsung heroes will witness some soulful music by many talented musicians from India. The young maestro prince of tabla Pranshu Chatur Lal will present his illuminating rhythm on the queen of drums who will also present a small excerpt in jugalbandi with renowned mridangam maestro Harsha Samaga. The subject of antibiotic resistance being one of the biggest threats to global health and development has been discussed several times in the past. But its significance has never felt so imperative before. Given the pandemic, extensive use of antibiotics to fight secondary infections or a simultaneous bacterial infection, significant spurt in self-medication and antibiotic resistance pattern has worsened. There is enough research that suggests that our approach in treating COVID in hospitals could be exacerbating this problem. Antibiotic resistance leads to longer hospital stays, higher medical costs, and increased mortality. What’s more worrying is that April 2021 WHO report revealed that none of the 43 antibiotics currently being developed “sufficiently address the problem of drug resistance”. If global Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) goes unchecked, we will face a future where even minor infections could mean death. We may witness more than 10 million deaths due to AMR worldwide by 2050.
SO, LET’S FIRST UNDERSTAND WHAT ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IS.Antibiotics are medicines used to prevent and treat bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. It occurs when these pathogens change in response to the use of these medicines. These organisms may infect humans and animals, and the infections they cause are harder to treat than those caused by a non-resistant pathogen. Moreover, poor infection control practices, negligent antibiotic use and the consistent dismissal of warnings against overuse of antibiotics often result in antibiotic resistance.
RISE OF AMR DURING COVID:We have already seen the rise of secondary infections and rare fungal infections such as Mucormycosis, Candidiasis, or Aspergillosis, taking a toll on COVID patients during the second wave. Several studies attribute this to the injudicious use of steroids and other antibiotics. Going forward, we may even see an increased incidence of drug-resistant TB and many such illnesses, if we do not check on the appropriate use of antibiotics.
Now, to address this issue, Fortis Hospital conducted a study to understand the effect of adherence to protocols for COVID care and its link to a reduction in incidences of Mucormycosis. The study revealed that under strict protocol-driven use of steroids and nurse-driven tight control of glycemia, the occurrence of Mucormycosis can be avoided. The other aspect highlighted in the study was that the use of other immunomodulatory drugs in patients if kept very low, can be beneficial in avoiding any secondary infections. It is also important to note that strict quality of oxygen humidification protocols and biosafety by nursing care should also be maintained. Like this, more and more healthcare providers urgently need to change the way steroids and antibiotics are prescribed & used.
SELF-MEDICATION, THE BIGGEST THREAT:Drug resistance caused by self-medication with antibiotics can be seen as one of the growing global threats. Self-medication is frequently noted as one of the major factors contributing to drug resistance. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines self-medication as “the selection and use of medicines by individuals to treat self-recognized illnesses or symptoms”. Moreover, lack of knowledge is a major factor responsible for inappropriate antimicrobial use and hence resistance.
NEED FOR MORE ANTIBIOTIC STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMS.Antibiotic stewardship programs are very much needed, to help providers and clinicians make the best clinical decisions possible for antibiotic prescribing. Antibiotic stewardship is the systemic effort to ensure effective treatment of infections, and therefore combat AMR, by monitoring and advising on antibiotic prescription and use.
The other way to curb antibiotic resistance is when hospitals can effectively manage their waste. Some researchers believe that the waste could be better managed if hospitals switched to biodegradable – mainly bio-based – disposable products. These could then be sent to anaerobic digestion plants or composting facilities, creating a single, more environmentally friendly, waste stream.
At the end, the pandemic is demonstrating the true magnitude of the antibiotic resistance threat. It is time we take the right action. Even if new medicines are developed, without behavior change, antibiotic resistance will become the next big pandemic which will be hard to control and will the biggest threat to humanity. Behavior changes must also include actions to reduce the spread of infections through judicious use of medicines, controlling self-medication, vaccination, hand washing, practising safer sex, and good food hygiene.

As a part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ at Kathak Kendra under Sangeet Natak Akademi and Ministry of Culture, the Government of India commenced the 15 days Live Kathak festival ‘VandeMaataram’ on 31st July 2021. This Festival of Diverse Expressions in Kathak also saw some amazing performances on 1st and 2nd August 2021. Each day of the festival is divided into 2 sessions. The first session starts in the morning Antarang a rendezvous with eminent Kathak artists, and their journey is followed by the second session in the afternoon with some dance performances.
The first day of the festival started with a lamp lighting ceremony by Kathak Guru PadamshriShovana Narayanand Shri Suman Kumar, Director, Kathak Kendra. The first session started with a chat with Guru Shovana Narayan Ji, talking about her journey as a Kathak artist. Later in the day, the second session kick-started with solo performances by Kathak Guru Samiksha Sharma performing shudhparamparik Kathak Dhrupad which was continued by a Taal Shikhar. She was accompanied by Shakil Ahmadon Tabla, Samiullah Khan on Gayan, Nasir Khan ji on Sarangi, pakhawaj by Mahavir Gangani and Atul Shankar on Basuri. This performance was followed by a mesmerising performance by Guru Abhimanyu Lal Ji who was accompanied by Akram Khan on Tabla, Vijay Parihar on Gayan, Salman Khan Ji on Pakhawaj, Nasir Khan Ji on Sarangi, Salim Kumar Ji on Sitar and Padanth by Nikhil Parihar. The evening continued with Guru MaltiShyam’sshudhparamparikkathak in teen taal. She was accompanied by Akhilesh Bhatt on Tabla, Gayan by Santhosh Sinha, Sarangi by Ghanshyam Sisodia, Sitar by Fateh Ali Khan Ji,RohitPrassana on Basuri and SushriYamika Mahesh on Padanth. Later, Guru Jaikishan Maharaj entertained the viewers with his BaithakiBhav from Lucknow Gharana. He was accompanied by Rahul Vishwakarma on Tabla, Bijesh Mishra on Gayan and Ghulam Waris on Sarangi. The evening was concluded with Guru Rajendra GangnaniJi’s performance – MathrubhumiNaman.
The second day of the festival started with great excitement. The first session of Antarang saw some interesting discussion with Kathak exponent Neelam Chaudhary. It was followed by a performance by Guru Pandit Deepak Maharaj Ji who was accompanied by Utpal Ghosal on Tabla, Arav Ananth on Padanth, Jayawardhan on Gayan and harmonium and Ghulam Waris on Sarangi. The day continued with the second session of performances by Pankaj Rawat. The young and talented artist presented shudhparamparik kathak in Chau taal followed by Thumri choreographed by Guru Munna Shukla. Pankaj was accompanied by Ghanshyam Sisodia on Sarangi, Anirudh Shukla on Tabla, vocal by Sanchari Bhattacharya and Jyotsna Banerjee on Padanth. The second performance was by Kathak exponent Bhawani Gangani and he was accompanied by Mohit Gangani on Tabla, MohdAyub on Sarangi, Vocal and Harmonium by Samiullah Khan Sahab, Padanth by Pravin Parihar and Ashish Gangani on Pakhawaj. The third performance of the session was by eminent Kathak artist Mayukh Bhattacharya Ji. He started his performance with Surya Vandana followed by sadedusmatra and abhinaya with a bhajan song by Bindadin Maharaj. The performance was ended with a Teen Taal Drut lay. This performance was followed by another mesmerising solo act by accomplished Kathak performer of Jaipur Gharana- Monisa Nayak. Her performance named Agarsar depicted the philosophy of co-existence as the true approach to move forward. The evening continued with the performance by Swati Sinha, one of the foremost practitioners of Kathak today. Her performance- ‘Still I Rise’ was about women liberalisation. The ended with a group performance by Asavari by Padmashri Shovana Narayan. The group dancers were Komal, Sukriti, Mahima and Sonal who along with Guru Shovana Narayan Ji presented ‘Namoh Swatantra Bharat Ka Dhwaj’. The music was composed by Madhav Prasad.
On the third day, the session the festival started with Antarang conversation with Prof Dr Mandvi Singh and Shri Suman Kumar, Director Kathak Kendra and lecture, demonstration, and presentation by Guru Piyal Bhattacharya. The second session saw amazing performances by Aryav Anand from Delhi, Rakhi Joshi, Kathak exponent of Raigarh Gharana, Shailja Bisht, a disciple of Malti Shyam, Vinita Jala from Gujarat, Kartika Singh from Delhi, DebojyotiLaskar from Tripura.
In the coming days of the festival, we’ll get to see Dr Pt. NandkishoreKapote a leading senior exponent of Kathak, Kathak virtuoso Shobha Koser on the stage amongst others, DebangshuMondal, Dinesh Gupta, Devanand Parihar, Punita Sharma, Mahua Shankar, classical Kathak danseuse, Kathak exponent Sandip Bose on 3rd August. On 4th August 2021, there will be a group performance by Urvashi Dance group by Rekha Mehra, renowned Kathak dancer from Patna Bihar – Rajiv Ranjan, Rashmi Uppal, Madhumita Roy, classical dancer and a choreographer Maitreyee Pahari. A repertory by Kathak Kendra, Shobha Deepak Singh and Shashikant Pathak. On 5th August 2021, Antarang with Pratibha Singh and Sunil Sankara. A speech by Manisha Sathe, solo performances by Karan Tirole, Rakesh Mandal, Minhaz Khan, Tina DeoleTambe, Rajshri Shirke and a duet performance by MegharanjaniMedhi and MoromiMedhi.

Lakhani said, “It is important to donate your organs and I am proud that my mother planned to donate her eyes and skin. People must create awareness about organ donation.”

Speaking about motivating the youth, Shamir Tandon shares, “These are some difficult times and it is testing each one of us. The good part is that we today have so many streaming platforms and digital platforms that we can curate music and showcase our talent. There is no immense need for a record label or a brand to back artists up. For the youth today it is advised to stay calm, practice your skillset, get motivated, identify their hidden talent. When the door opens to opportunities, their zeal, enthusiasm, and skill will get them to where you want to be”.
