Make-up Essentials for the Eyes

By Shahnaz Husain

In these days of wearing masks, our eyes do most of the talking. So here are some make-up essentials for the eyes:

kajal make up

Eye shadow helps to re-contour the eyes and add emphasis. The powder ones are more popular, as they are easier to apply and blend with sponge-tipped applicators and brushes. Pearly or shiny shadows are used for highlighting or for creating a shimmering effect. Or, go for matte shadows, to create a more natural effect or to play down. Some eye shadows even provide glitter for gala occasions.

Eyeliner helps to define the eyes. Liquid eyeliner has been popular for decades, but now different kinds of eyeliners are available. Gel eyeliner is thicker and applied with an angled brush. While eye pencils are hard, kohl liners or “kaajal” are softer and easier to apply.

As for further information…

eye make up

Use your eyeliner to create a small dotted line directly above your lashes on your upper eyelid. Make sure that the dots are as close to the base of your eyelid as possible; the point of eyeliner is to give the illusion of full eyelashes, which you can only do if the eyeliner is near the lashes. For the day, line your eyelids with matte brown or gray eye shadow for a softer effect. Outline the eyes with dark eyeliner. Apply it on the upper lid, close to the lashes and smudge with a cotton bud. Gently blend a line of kohl or eye pencil on the lower lid.

Eyelashes look thicker with skilfully applied mascara. A little practice is what you need. First of all, take good care of your lashes to protect their natural beauty. At night, use a cleansing gel and cotton wool to remove eye make-up gently. Roll-on mascara is easy to apply. Brush out lashes with a small brush, after applying mascara.

The buzz word now is eyelash extensions. They are attached to natural eyelashes, one by one, and make the lashes look thicker. Of course, you need to have them attached by a trained beautician. It’s up to you to decide how thick you want your lashes to be. The eyelash extensions may last for about 3 weeks to a month and then you will have to get them done again. Basically, the eyelash extensions are synthetic strands that are specially curved to look like natural eyelashes. It is said that mascara is not needed and if applied, it should be the water-based kind.

Day 0: The FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week with a Spectacular Show

Anamika Khanna

The joint phygital fashion extravaganza was opened with the Anamika Khanna collection. “Timeless The World” line was a grand start to the FDCI x Lakmé Fashion Week, as it was an emotional, joyous, fashion direction for the coming season.

INSPIRATION

Those quick-changing feelings and emotions that one goes through. From casual comfort wear to fashion luxury, Anamika kept nostalgia as well as tradition in mind as she paid homage to Indian heritage. It was also a creative merger of art and textiles as Anamika brought her versions of the fabrics that will create a trend during the coming season.

 FEATURES

  • Silhouettes and looks were unconventional but innovative with a boundaryless appeal for all buyers. The silhouettes remained true to the fluid; flowing lines that ensured a marked possibility of mix and match options.
  • Men’s wear was striking with embroidery that was used lavishly for robes and Sherwanis, which were at times teamed with cropped pants or fluid pyjamas, while cummerbunds and scarves added that touch of grandeur to the look.
  • Use of tassels and fringes on pockets, yokes and splashed all over the garments, Embroidered patches merged with the embellishments and the hand painting.

FOCAL POINT

With the hand-painted visuals of artists Deepak Kumar Saw, Smriti Lekha Gogoi and Amlan Dutta who added their floral and abstract touches; the collection was a feast for the eyes as one-shouldered tunics and cropped blouses were seen with asymmetrical skirts. Minis were luxuriously ornate under floor-length coats, while stylish double-breasted jackets for women added a sharp touch. Drapes were visible for fluid pants, but asymmetrical tunics and a traditional lehenga added variety to the collection. An occasional flowing shrug brought an interesting dimension to dressing up, while the imposing, green, shimmering, sequinned bodice creation with detailed embroidery on the skirt was a scene-stealer.

COLOUR CODE

Black and white duo that playfully danced amongst pops of sunny yellow, green and coral. Gold helped to elevate the mood of the collection to great optimistic levels.

Quotes

This is a feeling of coming home, a sense of comfort, professionalism, efficiency are the words I can use to describe how I feel with this event. It was an honour to be doing the opening show for FDCI x Lakmé Fashion Week’s joint fashion week. The past year has been a challenging one, to say the least, and I am glad to have the opportunity to use this platform to showcase my work, and the incredible artists I work with. My collection is a collaboration of art and textile and will be a homage to the fact that what is created will one day perish. What is left behind is legacy, and what matters most is what you do with it.”

Anamika Khanna

“We couldn’t have thought of a more fitting designer to kickstart the five-day joint fashion event- a Kolkata designer for a joint Mumbai and Delhi fashion Week that truly sets the tone for a collaborative spirit of fashion. As always, Anamika’s showcase was spectacular and she has set the bar high for all other showcases planned.”

Sunil Sethi, Chairman FDCI

“There are very few designers who can put up a showcase that is impactful and breath-taking – Anamika is one of them. We are so happy to have had her open the FDCI x Lakmé Fashion Week joint edition. This marks the beginning of all that we have in store for the five-day fashion event.”

Jaspreet Chandok, Head – Lifestyle Businesses at RISE Worldwide

“Anamika’s glamorous presentation was a great way to open the joint, phygital edition of FDCI and Lakmé Fashion Week.

COVID-19 vaccination – A handy guide for all your queries

By Dr Rahul Pandit,

We have entered the 2nd phase of the world’s largest immunization program. However, several looming questions could hamper the success of this program and weaken the fight against COVID19.

Yes, vaccination is the most effective tool to fight the COVID19 pandemic, and help us succeed in our mission to restore normalcy! Having said that, the COVID19 vaccination drive in India has seen much momentum since day 1. With an enthusiastic push from the civic bodies, we are slowly but steadily approaching our target goals. After successful round of vaccination for the healthcare providers and frontline workers, we have now moved to vaccinate & protect seniors above 60yrs of age, and those above 45yrs with comorbidities.

Here’s a guideline to help proceed with vaccinating yourself and your loves ones:

1.       All adults should take the COVID19 vaccine and encourage others to take it as well

2.       You should have had your meals, and be well hydrated for your vaccination

3.       Only people who have an Anaphylaxis (allergic reaction) to any of the vaccine contents, should NOT take the vaccine

4.       All approved vaccines including Covishield and Covaxin have;

  • 100% efficacy in preventing death due to COVID19
  • Very high efficacy against severe COVID19
  • High to moderate efficacy (60%-95%) against symptomatic COVID19
  • Poor efficacy only against asymptomatic COVID19

5.       Vaccinating the high-risk vulnerable population – above 60yrs and above 45yrs with co-morbidities will bring down the mortality rate to ‘very low’, as currently, this group forms almost 90% of patients who succumb to the disease. Therefore, we must encourage people in these age groups to be vaccinated

6.       People with previous COVID19 infection should take the vaccine only after 8-12 weeks of recovery from COVID 19

7.       A person who has received Plasma Therapy to treat a previous COVID19 infection should wait for 8-12 weeks before taking the vaccine

8.       Vaccine is safe in patients with Hypertension, Diabetes, Renal Failure, and Heart Disease, amongst those who have undergone bypass, post-Angiography, and those on Dialysis

9.       In pregnant women, if the benefit outweighs the risks of the vaccine, then you may take the vaccine. e.g. a frontline pregnant worker should take the vaccine

10.   There is no data on how long pregnancy should be avoided post-vaccination. However, as it is an inactivated or dead virus it should be safe after 6-8 weeks of vaccination to conceive

Also,

11.   Vaccine is safe amongst those with a food allergy, drug allergy (other than the vaccine components) and common allergic conditions like Asthma, Allergic Rhinitis and Allergic Dermatitis. But consult your doctor before enrolling yourself

12.   People on anti-platelet agents like Aspirin and Clopidogrel should take the COVID19 vaccine without stopping their medication

13.   Patients on blood thinners like Warfarin or newer anticoagulation agents have a small risk of injection site swelling. Patients who are on these newer agents can skip their morning dose, take the vaccine and continue the next regular dose

14.   Patients with neurological complications like Stroke, Parkinson’s, Dementia should take the vaccine as it is safe for them

15.   Patients on immunosuppressant’s (i.e. patients who’ve undergone organ transplants) of any type can safely take the vaccine. However, immune response may not be complete. Check with your doctor before enrolling

16.   It is false that alcohol is not allowed post-vaccine or that vaccine causes impotency or that vaccine will change the DNA of a person

17.   There are currently no trials available on children, hence vaccination for those below 18yrs can be delayed for now

18.   Patients with Cancer and those undergoing Chemotherapy should consult their doctor and seek an appropriate window for vaccination between the Chemotherapy cycles. Ideally, the patient should wait for at least 4weeks post-chemotherapy to take their vaccine

19.   Fever, body ache, dizziness, headaches are common symptoms post-vaccination

20.   A simple Paracetamol can be taken post-vaccination if required, and most symptoms would be well controlled.

Do not believe in rumours, the best way to get the right information is to speak to doctors at medical centres who are offering the COVID19 vaccination. Remember, vaccine-induced immunity is as important as herd immunity. It is the current and the only way to tackle the growing menace of the virus. Let’s all come together to fight back and end the pandemic once and for all.

Artist Mahhima Bhayanna on art

Artist statement

Manifesto

My art is an array of promiscuous questions on  how I experience my intimate truth within & without. Through my eyes, my mind, my ears and my heart I zoom In & I zoom Out.

A ripple effect of patriarchy has been a major obstruction in my expression and experience. Painting, art and solidarity is my compass to navigate my way out. My approach being of intersection-ally looking, questioning, comprehending and feeling at my life and the world around me, through a new lense.

As an Artist I see and think in lines, to me a line depicts emotions and has a lineage and history. I often question myself why I am so infatuated by the lines in forms and texts ?

How and why do I look at line as my conceptual practice? How will I see it differently?

Am I miniaturist ? but don’t identify as a traditional artist. However, I am extremely inspired by tradition. As I exist now, I imagine an urban born artist in me seeking to apply a new practice according to a unique perspective which is my own.
