RISE Worldwide presented sustainable collections of three labels It was a sustainable craft initiative by RISE Worldwide with the designers Sohaya Misra of Chola, Gaurav Khanijo of Khanijo and Pranav Mishra and Shyma Shetty of Huemn.
CHOLA
The collection “Human Nature” in just black and white brought forth the crazy but logical feel of the designer’s inspirations that moved steadily from the past to the present.
Detailing like strings, buttons, loops and straps ensured a size less offering for the free size silhouettes.
SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES
The Chola by Sohaya Misra has been very conscious right from its inception, when it comes to minimum wastage and carbon footprints, Chola’s fabrics are sourced from various clusters around India. Organic cotton comes from Pondicherry, Post-consumer waste Recycled cotton is from Tirupur, Hand woven Khadi from West Bengal, Muls from Bhopal and Pure Linens from various states of India depending on the availability and requirement. Recycled and upcycled or biodegradable usage is encouraged by the designer, while textile scraps are used for pockets or collars of garments that are all made in-house.
DESIGNER’S TAKE
“I am so excited to be a part of fashion week this year especially since the Fashion Design Council of India and Lakmé Fashion Week are coming together. When two powerhouses come together you can only expect fireworks and I expect nothing less as it is going to be massive, great, and fun. I am so happy to be presenting my collection, ‘Human Nature’ especially on a platform that profligate’s sustainability. It is something so important these days and needs to be inculcated into everyday life. I am really happy to be a part of that and really excited to see what this year has in store for us!”
HUEMN
The Huemn label created by Pranav Mishra and Shyma Shetty in 2012 has always been a provocateur and the collections have been inspired by the political, social and cultural aspects of time. The collection “Huemn 21” was a fashionable study in contrasts inspired by the current global emotions.
FEATURES
Anti fit and baggy silhouettes was the basis of the line, as shirts appeared with giant printed patch pockets, while denim biker’s jackets had a dual wardrobe appeal.
Use of 3D placement embroidery along with some embossing on strategic parts of the garments
Thousands of minute stitches highlighted the surface texturing using traditional embroidery that added a stylish appeal to the garments. The patterns brought to the forefront some scenic landscapes of rural India as well as images of the urban country.
SUSTAINBLE PRACTICES
Designed in a variety of 100 per cent cotton and silk home grown fabrics, the shapes were lounge worthy with timeless multiple uses and heritage possibilities.
Working with local artisans and sustainable materials, there were handcrafted pieces with traditional embroidery techniques, which highlighted slow fashion in the apparels.
DESIGNERS’ TAKE
“It’s a very exciting time in Indian fashion with the coming together of both powerhouses – FDCI and LFW; and as always, it’s a pleasure working with the many talented people who put together this special digital showcase that celebrates ‘All about India.’ “Huemn 21” is inspired by quiet, everyday snapshots informed by the cultural landscape of our times. Separates are meant to be conversational pieces, reflective of both- scenic landscapes of pastoral India and reflective bits of urban India; with our signature handcraft and finishing techniques. It pays homage to a sense of nostalgic beauty and comfort but draws a strong reference from modern, urban lives of those who drive our communities. We’re very happy to be introducing this fresh line of the Huemn collection, supported by both bodies, that is founded on the idea of ‘slow fashion’ and invests in local material, skill and urges responsible make and consumption.”
KHANIJO
The Khanijo collection by Gaurav Khanijo for the next season had variety, detailing, with a large dose of comfort that will take the wearer stylishly through the day.
FEATURES
Subtle detailing was apparent in the cuts and finish that highlighted the aesthetic and functional aspects of the garments.. Bringing a blast of colours for the range that had a retro 70’s vibe, the oversized silhouettes were enveloped in celebrating the cultures and life in a rainbow of hues and textures.
SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES
The Khanijo collection used natural and pure fabrics in just the right colours keeping the coming season in focus. The primary base of the garments was up cycled fabrics, while the beauty of nature inspired the look.
Besides these the brand has also used bamboo, hemp and Tencel for the hand woven fabrics with hand embroidery, which kept the organic and ethical aspects on track for the garments.
DESIGNER’S TAKE
“As it takes two to tango, there couldn’t have been a better time for our fashion industry to multiply the success together as one.”
Holi is a festival of colours and happiness. It is one such festival that brings out the child in us. The vibrant colours and the festive mood is enough to light up the atmosphere and enable people to enjoy. However, it is very essential to ensure that we have a safe Holi.
During this festival, we tend to use colours that have harsh chemicals, so first I would request you all to play Holi with Organic colours. The colours that are usually used during Holi can lead to skin allergies, rashes and damaged hair. According to me, the best way to play Holi is to play it with flowers. The aroma of different flowers makes a wonderful ambience and it is the safest way as well.
I would recommend you to follow a pre-Holi regime for skin and hair care as under:
Nails:
Paint your nails bright as this will help you keep your nails and the cuticles safe from the harsh colours and the chemicals.
Before going to play Holi, I would recommend you immerse your fingers in a mixture consisting of 1 tablespoon each of coconut oil and olive oil and 1 teaspoon of castor oil. This will help in keeping the colours from penetrating the cuticles of your fingers. This should be done for both fingers and toes.
Lips:
For protecting your lips while playing Holi, use a lip balm or lipstick so that it keeps the lips protected and moisturised at the same time.
Skin:
Make a mixture of 1 tablespoon each of coconut oil and olive oil and add to it a teaspoon of castor oil. Apply this mixture all over your skin before playing Holi. Make sure you apply it on the ears as well and the area behind the ears.
If you wish after moisturising your skin thoroughly with an oil mixture, you can apply sunscreen to your face.
I would recommend you avoid putting on any kind of makeup while playing Holi with colours.
Hair:
Oil your hair from the scalp to the tip of the hair the night before. Give your scalp a gentle massage before you sleep and repeat the process in the morning.
Do not leave your hair open. Tie it into a ponytail or a bun and cover your head with a scarf.
Post Holi Skin Care:
Do not scrub the colour off with soap. Use a cream-based cleanser or you can even use oil for removing the colours, and then go for a bath. Apply a lot of moisturising cream to keep the skin hydrated.
If the colours are still left on your skin you can follow any of the two recipes:
Add 1 teaspoon of besan to 2 tablespoons of milk and make it into a paste. To it add a few drops of lavender essential oil. Apply this mixture to your skin. Then have a bath.
Take 2 tablespoons of besan and sandalwood powder, add a tablespoon of orange peel and milk. Mix them together thoroughly and to this paste add 2 – 3 drops of sandalwood essential oil. Apply this mixture on your skin thoroughly and then have a bath.
Here are some great face packs that you can try at home-
For oily skin: Make a paste of papaya, lemon juice and milk powder. Apply it on and leave it for 20 minutes and then rinse off.
For dry skin: Mix a teaspoon of honey in half a mashed banana. To it add a pinch of sea salt, scrub for 10 minutes. Then rinse it off.
Skincare regime:
Clean your skin morning and night using a cleanser
Keep your skin thoroughly nourished by applying moisturiser
You can either use an almond nourishing cream or a Vitamin E cream in the night for keeping your skin smooth and supple.
How to remove the colour from hair
Rinse your hair completely without using shampoo at first. Once the colours are removed, then you can wash them with a mild shampoo and conditioner.
To revitalise your hair further, take yoghurt and mix a few drops of rosemary essential oil in it. Then apply it to the scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then rinse it off.
Post Holi – Hair Care Tips:
Since your hair turns dry after the festival of colours is over, you need to put it through deep conditioning. I recommend the following recipe for post-Holi hair care.
Take 1 tablespoon each of olive oil and coconut oil, to it mix 1 teaspoon each of castor oil, glycerine, vinegar, conditioner and your shampoo respectively. Apply the mixture on your hair and the scalp and leave it on for an hour and then rinse it off.

Payal Singhal
“It’s impossible to ignore the times we are living in when designing a collection now. We’ve spent the past year in kaftans and loungewear, they have become wardrobe MVPs. Comfort being the key, it was wonderful to embellish and work on a range of techniques with the R-Elan eco-friendly and free flow fabrics. R-Elan is undoubtedly the next generation of fabric.
Specially engineered to provide the dual benefits of high fashion and enhanced comfort which is the exact sentiment that ‘Kismet’ as a collection captures. The next wave of clothing is all about minimal maximalism—which means that even when dressed to the nines, there will be a need for ease in silhouettes and fabrics. This collection is a unique take on Indian wear merged with loungewear that I’ve never done before. It is also heavily inspired by how I dress — I don’t have separate Indian and western wear wardrobes. My personal style is all about making transitional pieces work together no matter the occasion.”
Further, “Kismet” – the collection is replete with kurta-jogger sets, bomber and co-ord sets, dhoti saris, ribbed crop top-jogger saris and balloon lehengas with crop tops and dupattas. These have been dressed in 10 new #PSPrints, which are a playful Gen-Z-friendly amalgamation of western and Indian motifs. Think aztecs, digital evil eye-inspired ikats, mosaic patterns, and classic florals. They have then been embellished with pitta kora work, cutdana, thread and wool embroidery and signature colourful tassels.

Designers’ Take
“We’ve been a strong proponent of this association and couldn’t have been happier with the timing. This collaboration is unique and a much needed one for the fashion fraternity. The pandemic has affected the consumption pattern of luxury and this association will marry the best both organizations bring to the table. From brand positioning, expertise in production, communication to business of fashion will take a new enriched form due to this alliance. It’s bonhomie of sorts. This is how the journey began between FDCI x Lakmé X IMG over 20 years ago. Nostalgia of this long association coupled with tremendous experience of both organizations and renewed passions will benefit design and talent. We at Geisha Designs wish FDCI & LFW all the very best for this unique edition of Fashion Week.”
