The online exhibition-sale on ‘Desi oon’ highlights the central role of wool in pastoral movements, cultures, and economies
The exhibition features different sheep breeds including the black sheep of Deccan, the Patanwadi sheep of Gujarat, and the Harsil sheep of Uttarakhand
The Desi Oon exhibition is accompanied by a film festival on pastoralism
Key Features
Desi Oon features a beautiful collection of products created by India’s wool artisans, the experiences of pastoral herders, and perspectives of civil society members, the exhibition is complemented by a film festival on pastoralism.
The Desi Oon story, through the journey of the wool fibre, traces the movement of sheep; the uniqueness of each breed; gorgeous diversity of traditional products and the wonderful skill of wool artisans.
The show seeks to connect pastoralists and artisans with designers and some of India’s best craft organizations trying to revive an entire value chain of indigenous wool.
Each partnering organization highlights a particular sheep breed — the Black Deccani Sheep by Mitan and Earthen Tunes, Harsil sheep by Avani and Peoli, Chokla by Rangsutra, Patanwadi by Khamir, and the indigenized Gaddi-Merino sheep of Himachal Pradesh by Aana Jana and Kullvi Whims.
Presented by Centre for Pastoralism, which is also engaged in revitalizing the indigenous wool economy and culture, the Desi Oon exhibition and the film festival are amongst the many initiatives that took root in the pastures of the Living Lightly project – a travelling exhibition on the lands, lives, and livelihoods of the Indian Pastoralists. The accompanying film festival, curated by Srishti Films, launches December 19. It kickstarts with a keynote address by eminent filmmaker Stanzin Dorjai whose film ‘Shepherdess of the Glaciers’ is among the award-winning documentaries and feature films being screened at the festival. Scheduled are panel discussions on pressing pastoral-related issues – from livelihoods to displacement, with panelists that are community members, activists, academics and student filmmakers.
Patient safety is core aspect of patient care and dialysis care is no exception. It rests on the core ethical principle of “First do no harm”. It is doubly important because haemodialysis is among the most advanced technology used in outpatient settings. Though there are safety checks and controls built in the technology used, the processes of care, the capability of the health care worker delivering the service and an engaged and informed patient are key to achieve the desirabl topmost priority at a dialysis centre.
Patient safety events in dialysis can occur in the following aspects of care
1. Initiation and ending of dialysis session
2. Type of dialyzer used and whether the appropriate labelled dialyzer was used
3. Amount of blood thinner used
4. Medications
5. Fluid removal on dialysis
6. Infections
What you can do to make your treatments safer
It starts with knowing where safety matters and doing the right action
¨ Give time to your technician and nurse the time for process of care when starting and ending your dialysis session.
¨ Know about the kind of kidney filter used and if it is to be reused, the identity has been verified. You could gently ask your care provider to recheck it especially if there is another patient with the same or similar name in your centre
¨ Ask your doctor about the amount of blood thinner you will need and know the same recommendations are followed
¨ Ensure your prescription is updated every few months every few weeks and insist on a copy of your medication prescription is maintained in your dialysis chart
¨ Limit your fluid intake to what is appropriate for you and do no insist on “maximal fluid removal” during a dialysis session. Based on each individual’s body weight, duration of the session, there is a limit to how much fluid can be removed.
¨ Clean your fistula site with soap and water before every dialysis treatment
¨ Clean your hands with soap and water or waterless alcohol-based sanitizer before you start your dialysis session and after you leave
¨ If you have a catheter, wear a mask and request your care provider to wear a mask when starting and ending dialysis. Know the signs when a catheter could be infected
¨ If you don’t have a permanent fistula, but will need dialysis for your lifetime, discuss the early placement of a fistula with your doctor, before the need for dialysis
¨ Ensure you have taken the vaccines recommended for you at the right dose and frequency.

Come winters, the rich lentil pudding to leave you craving for more
Prep Time 6 hrs
Cook Time 1 hr
Total Time 7 hrs
INGREDIENTS QUANTITY
Moong dal 120gm
Desi ghee 125gm
Sugar 100gm
Full cream milk 500ml
Saffron strands a pinch
Green cardamom powder 5gm
Sliced assorted nuts 20gm
Water to grind the dal 50ml
Chandi ka vark (optional) for garnish
METHOD:
· Wash and soak the moong dal overnight. Drain the water and set aside. If you can’t soak the dal overnight, soak for at least 4 hours.
· Using your blender or food processor, grind the dal using very little water. I used around 3 tablespoons, start with 1 tablespoon and add more as required to grind.
· Meanwhile heat ghee in a pan on medium heat. Once the ghee is hot add the grind dal to the pan.
· Keep stirring and cooking the halwa on low heat. Keep mashing with a spatula so that there aren’t any lumps.
· Meanwhile heat 2 cups + 2 tablespoons of milk. Once the milk is warm, take out 2 tablespoons from it in a bowl and add saffron strands to it. Set aside.
· You have to cook on low flame till raw smell goes away and color changes a bit. This will take around 20 minutes and at 20 minutes you will also notice ghee oozing out of the sides.
· Once the dal is roasted, add the 2 cups warm milk to it. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly.
· Now add the sugar, soaked saffron milk, crushed cardamom and chopped nuts.
· Cook on low heat; keep stirring every now and then. First it will be all liquid-y as the sugar melts.
· Keep stirring till halwa leaves sides of the pan, around 15-20 minutes.
· Remove heat from pan, transfer halwa to serving bowl, garnish with some nuts and serve immediately!

Blood pressure is a measurement of the force of blood against your artery walls. A person’s blood pressure is measured using two numbers, the systolic, in which your heart pump blood around the body and the other one is diastolic, in when your heart is at rest. In normal conditions, a person’s blood pressure should be 130/80 mmHg.
However, people on dialysis are more prone to high blood pressure which is also known as hypertension. There are several patients who are on end-stage renal disease and are maintained on Hemodialysis, these people too are at a greater risk of hypertension, and this could be probably because of impaired baroreflex function. Blood pressure and chronic hypertension contributes significantly to the high incidence of cardiovascular disease and the markedly reduced lifespan of Hemodialysis patients
What one needs to understand is the cause of high blood pressure. Fluid balance and blood pressure go together. When there is an excess amount of fluid in your body, water is pushed from your blood system into your surrounding tissues. This is observed more in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease and more in dialysis patients who pass a reduced amount of urine. Excess fluid can cause high blood pressure as well as swelling in the ankles and legs. Sometimes it can reach up to your lung in which a patient might experience problems while breathing.
Most people on dialysis will need blood pressure medicines to ensure their blood pressure remains under control, and this is generally taken on the days when a patient is not going for dialysis. Since blood pressure medicines work in different ways and sometimes the same medicines cannot be used forever, one should consult their doctor to ensure they are consuming the right medication.
As we are aware that blood pressure is caused by too much fluid in the body, reducing the dry weight can help a patient on dialysis to manage his blood pressure well. In certain cases, some patients might even have to stop blood pressure medication and have normal blood pressure when they reach their true dry weight.
There are many more ways how one can improve their blood pressure if it is too high;
· Stick to your fluid allowance (How much fluid you can drink in 24 hours)
· Reduce salt intake in your diet
· Exercise within your capabilities. Any form of physical exercise that a person undertakes is good for his or her overall health and potentially your blood pressure as well
· If you are diabetic, keep your blood glucose under control
· Ensure your medications are taken as prescribed.
