India needs to create the right environment, right now to entice global companies exiting China for other International locations. Post-COVID, India stands a chance to thrive economically, if it pulls up its socks and builds itself as a welcome destination for global investment, according to many financial experts. This means it needs to act now to allow ease of doing business, reduce tax and regulation bottlenecks and aid foreign companies who are exiting their bases in China.
Experts at the ‘Investments into India and the USA’ webinar, organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) and Invest India, brainstormed strategies to ease international business to India, boost Indo-American economic cooperation and look at two-way measures to benefit both the economies. This webinar is the fourth segment in a series of conferences promoting Indo-US bilateral investment.
“India needs to develop the art of visualisation… It’s not easy to uproot all of the current investment from China to India overnight”, said Nishith Desai, Founder and Partner at Nishith Desai Associates.
The current anti-China sentiment is fuelling many international businesses to rethink their Chinese bases. However, Desai explained, someone who has invested a lot in infrastructure, land use and technology will need a haven that welcomes international businesses. “It is not very easy to migrate from China to India. For manufacturing, we need to be careful about environmental issues, especially around pollution”, he added.
“Here, India will compete with a lot of other South-east Asian countries, like Vietnam, which is very welcoming to foreign companies”, said Sunil Kaul, Managing Director & Head, Southeast Director Asia for the Carlyle Group.
“For the Indian side, the barrier stems from the lack of single-window clearance for investors”, said Dave Springsteen, Partner, Withum. “Foreign businesses who seek to develop roots in India have to face a committee of secretaries from 35 central ministries or departments, besides an overall regime of 767 establishments pre-operational licenses. That’s beyond all inspections, approvals and renewals you need after the work begins”, he added.
Then, there’s also the case of regulatory controls and taxation policies. “We need to keep simplifying our tax systems and provide ease and predictability in tax systems and regulatory systems so that people who want to invest are aware of what they’re getting into”, Kaul added.
“Many Indian businesses who decide to set up base in the USA, face similar issues – the lack of proper paperwork, according to different states and the federal departments”, said Timothy R Lavender, Partner at Kelley Drye.
The second piece for this puzzle is to find a solution to tax cross-border or international transactions. “The way these cross-border transactions are to be taxed is an issue that the world is grappling with. The challenge in India, is also about implementing and interpreting the good laws we have”, said Kamlesh Vikamsey, Senior Partner, Khimji Kunverji & Co.
The group also brainstormed on areas where Indo-US collaboration would work spectacularly. “Services will see a huge upsurge – technology, media and entertainment, telecom, pharma, healthcare, medical devices, agrotech, IoT. Financial services, especially insurance, is also catching up, with the government allowing FDI upto 45% here”, said Nishith Desai.
Two prominent areas, according to Hoonar Janu, Co-Head (Americas), Invest India were defence and healthcare. “I’ve seen a four-fold increase in American ventures seeking Indian partners in defence and three times in healthcare”, he said.

Celebrate Freedom through Virtual Travel this Independence Day
Independence Day, under normal circumstances, called for community celebrations including flag hoisting, patriotic songs and traditional sweets. As the pandemic brings with it restrictions on movement and gatherings, celebrations this year will go virtual. One way to commemorate the day is by taking a virtual walk through iconic places that shaped the course of history, and re-visiting the lives of those who played a key role in bringing about the freedom that most of the world enjoys today.
South Africa, the land that immediately brings alive the imagery of Big 7 safaris, glamping, bungee jumping, shark cage diving, exquisite wines, diverse food and warm people, has another aspect to it that is equally appealing – it’s rich and diverse cultural history. The nation witnessed the rise of two of the world greatest advocates of freedom – Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a young lawyer, arrived in Durban in 1893 and moved in with his family. After the infamous train incident at Pietermaritzburg Railway Station where young Gandhi was off-boarded for sitting in a ‘whites only’ section, Gandhi stayed on in Inanda in the outskirts of Durban, where he developed his philosophy of Satyagraha. Gandhi left the Rainbow Nation, but his doctrine on Satyagraha found its way back in to the thoughts of Nelson Mandela who echoed the passive resistance concept as he led his country into freedom.
Mandela, born into a South African royal family, went on to become an influential political leader who was at the forefront of South African freedom struggle, the president of the nation and a global icon. From serving 27 years in prison to working as a philanthropist, his life was legendary to say the least. The ‘Gandhi of the African continent’ has received, and rightfully so, more than 250 honors including The Nobel Peace Prize and the Bharat Ratna.

Pietermaritzburg Railway Station
7th June 1893, went down in history due to Mahatma Gandhi’s refusal to budge from a ‘whites only’ coach on a train to Pretoria. Gandhi was thrown off the train at Pietermaritzburg Railway Station for this act of defiance that set the stage for Civil Disobedience. The historic building stills stands, with a plaque commemorating the incident that proved to be a turning point in Gandhi’s fight against racial discrimination. Sushma Swaraj, External Affairs Minister for India, recently commemorated 125 years since the passage of this incident by embarking on a train journey from Pentrich to Pietermaritzburg.

Phoenix Settlement, Inanda
Situated 20 kilometers north of Durban, the Phoenix Settlement is a part of Kwa Zulu Natal’s Inanda Heritage Route. Gandhi resided here along with his family in a house named Sarvodaya, meaning ‘well-being for all’. It is at Phoenix that Gandhi produced his weekly Indian Opinion newspaper from the International Printing Press – the building of which remains till date. The former home of Gandhi, burnt down in the political upheaval of the mid-1980s, has been reconstructed as a free-for-all museum that pays tribute to his achievements and to the principles of Satyagraha.
Nelson Mandela spent 18 immensely challenging years in prison on this little island situated off the coast of Cape Town and yet emerged from it filled with forgiveness instead of hatred. Robben Island is now a World Heritage site and museum. Although from the 17th to the 20th century the island was a place of imprisonment – today it is a beacon of hope and a place where visitors can gain some insight into the life and times of Nelson Mandela and fellow freedom fighters. Trips to Robben Island begin from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront, where ferries transfer you to the former prison.
Google offers a narrated tour – complete with a visit to Mandela’s 6.5 x 6.5 foot cell – led by Vusumsi Mcongo, an anti-Apartheid activist who was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1978-1990.
Constitution Hill
Through the years, the Constitution Hill functioned mainly as a prison. It was here that many passive resistors and freedom fighters including the Father of our Nation – Mahatma Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela were held; the site has two permanent exhibitions that revolve around the lives of both these revolutionaries. A walk through Number Four section of the prison, reading up on the horrific conditions of the time and the difference in how prisoners of different races were treated, quickly hammers home the need for radical reform and equality for which Mandela was fighting – and ultimately achieved. The Constitution Hill in Johannesburg is now a fascinating museum and the home to South Africa’s constitutional court.

Capture Site
This site has enormous significance in the history of the freedom struggle because it was here that, after 17 months of evading the apartheid authorities, Nelson Mandela was arrested. On 5th August, 1962, the policed flagged down a car driven by Nelson Mandela in a chauffer’s uniform while he was returning from a secret meeting with the African National Congress president. This incident would go on to shape the future of an entire country. To mark the historic spot is a sculpture comprising of 50 steel rods, which align to create a magnificent portrait of Mandela.

The Indian print is part of a strong tradition of art for the masses. It has been used for dissemination of information, entertainment, advertising and propaganda. The idea of printing caught on in a big way when India was in the throes of fighting British colonial rule and it was not long before the images of the well known political figures of the day, all of whom had caught the imagination of an oppressed populace in India and beyond, were on posters, labels and calendars. Printing presses like the Ravi Varma Press, Chitrashala Press, Brijbasi & Sons, Swastik Picture House and Photo Service Company churned out prints in large numbers. The heroes of the freedom movement were elevated to the status of quasi-divinity. These were sold cheap in shops or distributed on the streets and came to be identified as street art. Today, these posters and prints are difficult to obtain and have become collectors’ items. They provide not only a historic account of a particularly turbulent and inspiring time in modern India’s history, but also hold their own as works of art. A face pack performs many functions that improve the health and appearance of the skin. They have a deep cleansing action on the skin, removing impurities, wastes and dead skin cells. They also keep the pores free of clogged oil and prevent many related problems. Blood circulation to the skin surface also improves, leaving the skin smooth, glowing and rejuvenated.
A beauty mask or pack should be chosen according to individual requirements. There are many kinds of masks, depending on the function they are to perform. You can also select them according to skin type. Some masks, like Peel-off Masks, may suit all skin types. If there is an acne condition or sensitive skin, avoid grainy masks or even peel off masks.
Masks You Can Mix At Home:
· Mix egg yolk with a little honey and apply on the face for normal to dry skins.
· Mix egg white with a little honey and apply on the face for normal to oily skins.
· Mix oat meal with yogurt into a paste for normal to oily skins.
· Mix ground almond, a little milk and honey for normal to dry skins.
· Papaya pulp can be a wonderful cleansing mask for oily and combination skins.
· Mix wheat bran (choker) half-tablespoon yogurt, 1 teaspoon orange juice, 1 teaspoon carrot juice. It suits all skin types. If the skin is dry, add one teaspoon olive or sesame seed oil.
· Mix oat meal with potato juice and yogurt for an oily skin.
· Collect orange peels and dry them in the sun. There should be no moisture. Keep in an airtight jar and ass them to your face masks.
Some tips for face pack application:
Tie your hair back, away from the face. First cleanse your skin thoroughly.
Use a flat, wide brush to apply the pack. Do not apply any pack on the sensitive skin around the eyes, unless it is specially indicated for this delicate region. Avoid the lips too. Leave it on till it is dry. About 20 minutes should do. Remove the pack by rinsing it off with plenty of water, unless special directions for removal of the pack are indicated, as in the case of “peel-off” masks.
