Air India to Open Flagship Maharaja Lounge at JFK Terminal 6 in 2028

Air India will shift its New York operations to the new Terminal 6 at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in 2028, marking a significant step in the airline’s global transformation and strengthening its premium presence in North America.

The move will place Air India alongside several Star Alliance member airlines, making same-terminal connections more convenient for passengers travelling onwards across the Americas. The airline currently operates daily nonstop flights between New York and Delhi and Mumbai from Terminal 4 using its Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft. Services will continue from Terminal 4 until the transition is completed.

A major highlight of the move is the opening of Air India’s first flagship Maharaja Lounge in New York. Covering around 9,100 square feet in a prime post-security location, the lounge will offer premium travellers a refined experience inspired by Indian hospitality, featuring comfortable seating, curated dining, premium amenities and spaces designed for both relaxation and business.

Terminal 6 is one of the centrepieces of the US$19 billion redevelopment of JFK Airport and is scheduled to be completed in 2028, with the first phase opening in 2026. Designed as a next-generation international terminal, it will feature 10 gates capable of handling widebody aircraft, shorter walking distances, intuitive wayfinding, premium shopping and dining, automated baggage handling, seamless connectivity with Terminal 5, advanced sustainability features and modern passenger facilities.

The relocation aligns with Air India’s wider transformation strategy following its privatisation, which includes fleet expansion, new-generation aircraft, upgraded cabins, enhanced digital services and continued investment in delivering a more seamless end-to-end travel experience for international passengers.
