Sustainability triggers creativity in fashion

By Ankit Jaipuria, Co-founder, uKom

The fashion industry has indeed evolved over the years. The transition from fancy, expensive clothing made with no regard for waste, environment, or human labor to durable, eco-friendly apparel has been dramatic, but for the better. Nowadays, a growing number of people support a socially and environmentally responsible method of producing clothing. Even brands and retailers can be seen using long-lasting materials and finishes that are environmentally friendly. And consumers are largely choosing sustainable fashion brands that provide quality out of the best usage of resources, thereby efficiently controlling waste management. In addition, the fashion industry has been a major contributor in leaving an environmental imprint. Shifting to sustainable fashion is a pressing priority now, considering it is good for the planet.

For a very long time, individuals had carried out a mob mentality when it came to fashion trends; as a result, many of us have lost sight of our own distinctive sense of style. Hence, most of the sustainable manufacturers are increasingly concentrating on producing classic, high-quality pieces and offering consumers the chance to design their own sustainable outfits.

Sustainability- A trend in the fashion industry

Previously there was a trend of fast fashion where businesses made use of cheap, dangerous materials without regard for morality in order to make huge profits. But in this present-day fashion era, slow fashion is a new reality. It encourages the belief that you use your clothes to their best potential and you may wear them throughout the time without going out of style. In fact, in light of the shift in customer purchasing habits, fashion producers are now pushing sustainable fashion trends. Additionally, there has been a sharp increase in the proportion of educated customers, those who consider the product’s origins as well as its value and quality when making a purchase. And this is how sustainable fashion came into being.

Three ways you can be creative with sustainable fashion

Recycle: Recycling and upcycling is the newly established trend in the fashion industry. It entails repurposing used fabrics to create something new and distinctive as opposed to throwing them away. Not only would you get a new outfit as a result, but there would also be a huge decrease in waste.

Go for trans-seasonal clothes:  Investing in clothes that you know are going to be useful to you all year long is a smart decision to make. There is no point in stocking too many summer or winter clothes because in the next season you would obviously get bored of them or the trend would change altogether. So, the best course of action would be to go for neutral clothes which you know are going to be valuable to you in any season.

Mismatch: Gone are the days when people used to purchase separate outfits for various occasions in distinct colors. Nowadays, people believe in creating unique matches and that’s how they establish creativity and originality in their fashion sense. Besides that, individuals believe that clothing should be used to its utmost capacity. The kind of versatility the outfits today come with gives people the opportunity to put on their creative foot forward and come up with something absolutely extraordinary.

Sustainability: The future of fashion

The meaning of fashion for people has changed over time. Earlier individuals preferred short-lived fashion and went on spree buying. And to meet that demand, producers of fast fashion used risky materials and lacked ethical production. But now, consumers are more driven towards a sustainable form of fashion. They look forward to outfits that have a longer shelf life and are multipurpose in nature. Making a note of that, manufacturers today have also embraced the idea of slow fashion, which calls for clothing that is timeless in design and can last a long period regardless of what is in style.

There is no established rule that says fashion cannot be sustainable or sustainable clothing cannot be unique. With the rise in the number of fashion-educated individuals, there’s an increase in the demand for garments that are neutral to every season. The concept of mob mobility no longer exists and people essentially believe in creating their own sustainable fashion that makes sense to them. Thus, it is reasonable to say that sustainability is the future of the fashion industry and that sustainable clothing will be a reality for a while. At last, it is up to you to make something inventive out of it.
