LivingValentine’s Day 2022

Understanding the importance of self-love and self-care in this season. Smytten has drafted a Listicle to help individuals focus on self-care following these 5 easy steps. Wondering how to spend Valentine’s Day? How about a date with yourself? Read to know more.

5 ways to practice self-love this Valentine’s day

When you hear the term self-love, it’s easy to slip into depictions of women indulging in sheet masks or spontaneous road trips as shown in films and popular shows. In all fairness, more power to them! However, self-love is not just limited to these acts. It can look different for every one of us. A rigorous Pilates routine can be just as relaxing as a spa treatment. Self-love translates to wholly accepting your authentic self -with all the flaws and imperfections that make you unique as an individual.

As Valentine’s Day nears, things can seem over the top and often overwhelming, even if it may be hard to admit! With a focus on companionship, gifts, sweets, chocolates, and candlelit dinners – the day may push the void of a partner in your face. But perhaps, there is something deeper to this celebration of love. Instead of seeing this as a day that focuses on romantic relationships between partners, why not embrace it as an opportunity to discover yourself, and be your own valentine?

Smytten lists down 5 ideas to kick-start your self-love journey and make this day a whole new experience!

1.   Clean & Organise – There is no greater feeling than getting something done, first thing in the morning. Starting your day off with an accomplishment can instantly elevate your mood and self-esteem. In a subconscious attempt to duplicate that feeling, you will end up getting more done than usual. Dedicating some time to organise your room can also noticeably help in decluttering thoughts.

2.   Meditate – Meditation helps silence your mind and refocus your attention to the present moment. While there are numerous ways to do it, here’s something you can try – spend at least three minutes doing a slow, breath-work meditation where you focus on your inner strengths. End with vocalising your gratitude for a fully functioning body. And yes, it may seem crazy but complimenting yourself out loud can be a complete game-changer!

3.  Experiment with self-care – The internet is flooded with self-care tips that can confuse a reader to the point of taking no action at all. Here’s where experimentation comes in! From the viral Moroccan Argan Oil Facial Kit to taking a bubble bath, find what works for you. It may seem time-consuming and tedious but trying something new will always be rewarding. At the end of the day, when you come across the perfect match, it’ll be totally worth it!

4. Keep a journal – Write like you would a friend. Document your dreams, aspirations, dilemmas, or even just a day in your life. Basically, allow your thoughts to flow. Writing it proactively gives you a chance to set intentions that lead to positive thoughts, self-image, and overall happiness.

5. Buy yourself flowers – Representing a tangible form of love, break the stereotype of waiting for someone else to present you with flowers. Shower yourself with fragrance and love by choosing the perfect flowers and bringing freshness to your home or office space. Or spoil yourself with the perfect floral perfume – it’s all up to you!

Lastly, purposefully choose to love yourself every day. It’s quite simple – hydrate, eat at least 3 meals a day, get 8 hours of sleep, limit screen time, and say no to activities that have a negative impact on your physical and mental health. Try something new this Valentine’s Day and prioritise self care activities that bring you the most joy. Self-love allows people to embody their best versions, and as a result show up for their jobs, relationships, and families in the greatest way possible.
