“The Meraki Home”

Finalized during the pandemic, The Meraki Home is an 1800 square feet apartment in Gurugram, Haryana, designed by  Priyanka Singh and Jhanak Jain. The home projects a warm and inviting image with optimal space and functionality. Its design reflects the personality and lifestyle of the owner and revolves around the philosophy of creating a unique, innovative and clutter free space.

Ingenious design solutions maximise space while neutral tones, wood tones and accent colours combine together to create a warm and soothing decor

A warm, inviting and homely décor was achieved by introducing natural materials, textured fabrics, wooden elements and hints of metal. Wall-mounted light fixtures avoided cluttering of table tops and the bed heights were ergonomically designed according to the comfort of the end user. While planning the home, Priyanka ensured that all the four bedrooms of the home have an ensuite bathroom. The size of the kitchen was reduced to scoop out a dedicated space for ironing clothes and storage.

The living room comprises a feature wall with an array of square shaped mirrors which reflects a lot of light and creates the feeling of spaciousness while the carpets and cushions stand out in shades of blue. The dining room is multifunctional and includes a circular dining table with an Italian marble top, a built-in crockery unit, a bar and a modern puja space. The bespoke furniture is customised by Chalk Studio and executed with a lot of detail.

Each bedroom is skilfully crafted so that it includes a bed, side tables, a study table and an accent element which can transform the overall look of the bedroom. A floating study and TV unit in the master bedroom brings in the feeling of openness, sky blue colour is used in the daughter’s bedroom to accentuate the bed and pin up board while tones of grey and black fabric heighten the ambience of the son’s bedroom.

The carpet is sourced from Jaipur rugs while the collection of cushions is from Sarita Handa and Rajee Sood. The artefacts are specially handpicked from Oma, Bo Concept, Gigi, Chakra and the chandelier is custom-made by The Lighting Studio. Custom touches and clever planning come together to create a highly luxurious and comfortable multifunctional space.

A brainchild of Priyanka Singh, Gurgaon based Chalk Studio Design Pvt. Ltd.  is an interior design firm established two years back. Priyanka Singh has a passion for interior design and is an alumni of Parsons, The New School of Design with an added experience of working with renowned firms like Tihany Design and Rockwell Group in New York. After returning to India, Priyanka set up her own firm Chalk Studio which has a global design vision and has innovatively designed more than 40 prestigious projects within a short span of time.

Quote“We decided to call this project ‘The Meraki Home’ because it was designed with a lot of dedication and passion during unprecedented times. Since the entire project was conceptualised and executed during the pandemic, we were working remotely on the design and taking approvals from the client who was in Singapore. It was a challenging experience because the civil work was going on at site when we were simultaneously finalising the design and the client moved in  two days before Diwali when the project was in the finishing stage, ” says Priyanka Singh, Founder and Principal Designer of Chalk Studio.

Uplifting residential design in the Pandemic Phase 2- Are we ready yet?

By Ar. Sumit Dhawan, Founder & Principal Architect at Cityspace’ 82 Architects

Looking at the current situation, Ar. Sumit has extensively talked about “Uplifting residential design in the Pandemic”

The fate of single homes and multigenerational residences has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This unique situation the world has been thrust into has led to some major reconsiderations in terms of lifestyle and basic habitual changes for a common man. Public spaces like parks, restaurants, and movie theaters have adapted to the new normal while incorporating safety and sanitary measures. It is high time that such a shift is observed in the residential sector as well. It is especially relevant in India as the area per person, per square feet, is fairly limited here. Therefore, smart utilization of space needs to be addressed in the current times.

The connections we have with our residential have grown stronger over the course of the year 2020 and the first quarter of 2021. Such a mental-physical relationship between our homes and minds will persist well after the pandemic has subsided. Therefore, it is necessary that the layouts of one’s abode are adaptable. At the same time, certain areas of the house need to be designated for specific activities like working, studying, eating, and sleeping. The current situation demands a fine balance between multi-purpose spaces and rooms with fixed function. Else, the process may hamper the work-life and personal life if this balance is disrupted. For instance, working from the bed is a faux-pas. The lines between office life and home life can be blurred, leading to faster burnout.

Further

The buildings of the future need to be independent and self-sufficient. Each apartment or house must have its own water and heating plan in place in case the city’s power grid fails. A lot of people are looking into renewable sources of energy like solar power in order to cut down on electricity bills while opting for eco-friendly solutions. A safety net needs to be created. Solid fuel boilers, stoves, and batteries shall be kept as an emergency option in case of power failures amidst this global crisis. It is best to be prepared.

As the lockdown slowly gets lifted, public spaces like restaurants and cinema halls open up. These places are envisaged to be well-equipped with sanitization, disinfection spaces, and temperature checkpoints at the entrance. These techniques are required to be employed in private residential as well. In order to keep homes clean, the entryway or foyer can serve as transitional spaces where guests can be sanitized. Also, the installation of antimicrobial surfaces in living rooms can help. Such surfaces are resistant to damage or rust, are easy to clean, and are relatively maintenance-free.  It is also important to incorporate air-purification systems into daily life in order to avoid breathing in contaminated air.

The reliance on the homes will persist even after the pandemic will be over. We need to accept the new reality and adapt to measures that will ensure greater freedom and mobility in our homes to accommodate a variety of activities in life.

Oxygen concentrator & cylinder for COVID care -when should I opt for oxygen support at home?

By  Dr Sanjay Shah

With oxygen deprivation and Lung infections becoming common problems faced by patients during the second wave of COVID19, many patients have been recommended to use oxygen concentrators&cylinders at home to maintain oxygen levels and avoid fatalities. However, with oxygen therapy, one needs to be doubly careful and be aware of the risks &dangers as well.

Here are some common queries that will help you make the right decision for oxygen support.

WHEN SHOULD YOU TAKE OXYGEN SUPPORT?

Oxygenation should be preferred when blood oxygen levels (SpO2) readings drop below 94%. Ideal oxygen levels should be between 95-99%. While no oxygen therapy can instantly boost oxygen levels or restore them to normal, COVID+ patients should aim to achieve a saturation of up to 92%. Experts also advise that achieving 100% saturation shouldn’t be done, when the body is sick. More so, this may exhaust your resources quicker- whether it is a concentrator or cylinder that you use.

WHAT IS AN OXYGEN CONCENTRATOR? HOW DOES IT WORK?

Oxygen concentrator is an electronically operated device that separates oxygen from roomair. It provides a high concentration of oxygen directly to you through a nasal cannula. These devices work on the principle of ‘rapid pressure swing absorption’ which is where the nitrogen is removed from the air using zeolite minerals which absorb the nitrogen, leaving other gases to pass through and capturing oxygen as the primary gas.The collected oxygen is 92-95% pure.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OXYGEN CONCENTRATORS AND CYLINDERS?

The difference is that a concentrator purifies the air and makes it available for patients who have low oxygen levels in their blood. It just needs to be pulled into a power source. Cylinders accomplish the same, but the oxygen is already compressed within the tank. That supply is gradually reduced until the tank runs out and needs to be refilled or replaced.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND BEFORE BUYING OR RENTING AN OXYGEN CONCENTRATOR:

Normal air will have 21% oxygen. If 1-liter oxygen is provided to the patient through the concentrator, the oxygen percentage (or fraction of inspired air) in Lungs rises to 24%, with 2 liters it rises to 28% and with 10 liters it rises to 60%. Depending on the need, the liters of oxygen per minute must be regulated. There is a need for monitoring this from time to time. To ensure that the flow of oxygen is proper and that the patient is not over oxygenated. Seek your doctor’s advice to decide how many liters per minute of oxygen is required for your patient. Keep a pulse oximeter handy to check oxygen levels from time to time. Oxygen concentrators can supply between 0.1 liters per minute (LPM) to 5 to 10 LPM.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Only mild to moderately ill patients, who have an oxygen saturation level between 90-94%, should depend on an oxygen concentrator and can use it at home. We must understand that hoarding of such life-saving equipment will only worsen the country’s problem. Anyone with oxygen saturation depleting below 80-85% may need a higher flow of oxygen. And will have to switch to a cylinder or liquid medical oxygen supply and may eventually need hospitalization.

TYPES OF OXYGEN CONCENTRATORS:

There are two types of oxygen concentrators— continuous flow and pulse dose. Continuous flow oxygen will provide the same flow of oxygen every minute unless it is turned off irrespective of whether the patient is breathing it in or not. While pulse dose oxygen concentrator detects breathing pattern and dispenses oxygen when it detects inhalation. The oxygen dispensed per minute will vary in the second case.

WAYS TO IMPROVE OXYGEN LEVELS FOR COVID PATIENTS:

Oxygen delivery can be increased by using prone positioning. Physical position affects the distribution and volume of air in the Lungs and can have direct effects on the expansion or collapse of the delicate alveoli that permit the exchange of oxygen &carbon dioxide in the blood. It involves turning a patient with precise, safe motions, from their back onto their abdomen so that the individual is lying face down to improve breathing and oxygen flow in the body. Having said that, getting the right advice on how proning can be complemented with oxygen supply is significant. Talk to your doctor today to understand when to opt for oxygen support at home, if your patient is eligible for oxygen support at home, and how it can be best utilized.
