Right from Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War to Fatu Kekula who help to treat Ebola patients in Liberia, nurses have been at the forefront of any healthcare crisis. They are the critical link in the healthcare system that not only helps people recover back to health, but become the biggest support to the family of the sick.
Especially during this pandemic, the roles of nurses have changed with great responsibilities and with a lot of challenges. A typical day in the life of a nurse on the COVID war front is filled with great uncertainty and a constant marathon. Every single shift has the potential to be momentous, exhilarating, exhausting, energizing, or all of the above. On any given day, nurses can see people at their weakest and most vulnerable, or at their strongest and most resolute times.
Moreover, a single breach in infection prevention practice can cause life-threatening infections to any patient, especially for critical COVID patients who are immunocompromised considering the use of steroids, raised blood glucose levels, and use of medications that suppress immunity. Nurses acts as patient advocates to ensure that the right treatment reaches the patient in the right manner. They witness the results of life-ending injuries and illnesses with such regularity that they become par for the course. Yet, this just the tip of the iceberg.
The stories and experiences that nurse have had since the pandemic is beyond compare but the lessons learned are here to stay.
LESSONS FROM THE PANDEMIC:
COVID19 pandemic has put the entire healthcare community in trial mode. A trial that tested each and every healthcare provider’s endurance and resilience. Nurses were no different. The challenges were many; but amid these challenges, healthcare has transformed itself to accommodate the dynamic needs of the community. Infrastructural and process changes like creation of specialized isolation units, negative pressure areas, availability and efficient utilization of manpower and PPE, frequent mock drills, patient flow management drills, etc., have been implemented to tackle even the most extreme situations smoothly.
CRITICAL ROLE IN EMERGENCY CARE:
Nurses are an integral part of the disaster management team. They are the ones who triage (sort) the patients on their arrival which requires the right knowledge and critical thinking, and depending on her assessment the doctors treat those patients first who require urgent attention & treatment. Nurses are vital in mobilizing resources, ensuring appropriate patient monitoring, and providing the right care to needy patients. Nurses are also a major part of decision-making when it comes to risk mitigation.
BUILDING RESILIENCE:
Doctors and nurses have braved various crisis situations hand in hand with much dedication throughout ages, but it is only after the pandemic that their true worth has emerged. Each young doctor and nurse, despite being overwhelmed with stress and anxiety, witnessing deaths every now and then, themselves getting infected, and even passing on the infection to their family, have not stopped coming back to work.
Nurses have started having a bigger roles when it comes to patient care in COVID19 units. Frequent rounds & monitoring, ensuring patient receives food and medications round the clock, risk prevention and mitigation, attending to doctors and following specific instructions, collecting blood samples, escalating warning signs, etc., places nurses on a higher pedestal of responsibility and accountability.
The biggest challenges faced were to be flexible with changing protocols, nurse training, and wearing PPEs for several hours together. Fear of being infected and infecting the near & dear ones added up to the tension and anxiety. Despite these, they did not lose our spirit, they had to go on. This was one of the biggest healthcare crises the country had ever faced in many years. Most of the hospitals although having an Infection Control Unit, were still not prepared for a crisis of this magnitude. They had to be deft in learning and help others learn too. They had to handle patients and extremely frightened patient relatives who weren’t even sure whether they would see their people again and the burden of short staff, limited resources made matters worse. Having said that, the lessons from the pandemic have also empowered them.
ROLE OF THE NURSING HEAD IN INFECTION CONTROL:
Infection prevention and control became a priority for healthcare staff across all areas of clinical practice. The nursing staff became a critical link in infection control. They had to formulate new protocols and update skills accordingly. This includes segregation of patients as per their clinical conditions, creating isolation units for COVID19 positive and suspected cases, ensuring adequate availability of PPE for all healthcare staff, skilled manpower & resources, and the well-being of all healthcare workers by providing them with prophylaxis, nutritious food, and psychological support. So, this is one part of the planning and establishing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The next step is the preparedness implementation that includes infrastructure and inventory planning to ensure all patients get the required medicines and oxygen or ventilator support. Strict protocols had to be followed by each and everyone entering the COVID units.
NURSES WILL HAVE A BIGGER RESPONSIBILITY IN EPIDEMIOLOGY STUDIES:
As part of the community nursing program, we are trained to partake in epidemiology studies. Indirectly in many ways, we do contribute to understanding epidemics, an outbreak which becomes an important element of disease management. But going forward, the role and responsibilities will increase. During this pandemic, nurses have already been involved in data collection and analysis, understand the disease patterns, peaks, and more. They identify and investigate the problem, formulate the causal factors and alternative interventions, and implement to prevent and control the problem, also evaluating the effectiveness of the intervention. They participate in data collection, data analysis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. And have an active role in the prevention and control of communicable diseases which include:
Identify sources of infection and methods of spread of infection
Health education of people in general
Notification of COVID19 to the health authority
Teach and supervise other workers in surveillance activities
The civil society has come together in an exemplary display of strength and support in these testing times of the covid-19 pandemic. 1. Coconut milk is the healthiest natural ingredient for healthy hair. The remedy you should try, mix freshly extracted coconut milk with a squeezed lemon and 4-5 drops of lavender essential oils. Leave it on for 4-5 hours and then rinse it off.
2. Before you shampoo your hair, take 1 tablespoon water and 10 drops of patchouli essential oil. With your fingers apply this all over your scalp and hair. Shampoo your hair as you normally do.
3. Add 2-3 drops of Ylang Ylang essential oil to your shampoo to include it in your regular care regime. This exotic oil is used as the main ingredient for Macassar hair oil, hairdressing pomade, in the Victorian era. It can also be used as a natural conditioning agent. It increases the production of sebum which makes it healthy and nourished.
4. The easiest way to treat an oily scalp is to have your first wash with an oil control shampoo. Do the second hair wash with moisture boost shampoo, this is especially for
the tresses.
5. Rather than going overboard with shampooing , switch to dry hair shampoo. Use it only on the crown and comb it into the tresses.
6. A big myth that I would like to rule out is, people with oily hair don’t need a conditioner. They need a conditioner as much as those with dry scalp; they just have to apply it on the tresses and not take it to the scalp. Use a light conditioner, avoid using hair masks.
7. To cut down oil from your hair, yet keeping it shiny use apple cider vinegar as your last rinse. Take 1 teaspoon for 1 mug of water.
8. Make sure that you use products that are formulated for oily hair only, like using oily hair oil and not castor or any other oil.
9. Oily hair means a lot of sticky dandruff as well, to eliminate it take 1 teaspoon lemon juice in coconut oil and apply it all over your scalp.
10. Stop running your hand or hairbrush through your hair frequently. This increases the sebum of it and causes oiliness. I am not saying to let them tangle, just try brushing a lot and just run your fingers through your tresses and enjoy the natural flow of your hair.

Being a mother doesn’t come with a manual and it doesn’t get easy even if you have been at it for years. Yes, it’s the most beautiful feeling but we can’t deny that. Mothers are overworked, exhausted and slowly it becomes their normal way of being. After a point, they don’t know how to do nothing and just be.
Though the period of lockdown has been good in a way that it got families to have more time with each other. But it has taken breathing space away from mothers.
They are constantly attending to the needs of different members of the family. The burden of household work has significantly increased, some are managing work from home, raising children. And taking care of the sick and in all this the absence of house help has only made it more difficult. Mothers are working around the clock, doing double and triple shifts.
Though gender roles are changing fast but largely still the onus of running a home is on the women of the house. Moms wear so many hats and it’s not surprising that self care sometimes just doesn’t happen for moms.
A buddhist teaching talks about how you cannot keep pouring from an empty cup. It emphasises on the importance of nurturing and nourishing oneself. So we can share that energy with the people around us. With moms, it becomes difficult to take out time for oneself without experiencing guilt. Without your mind giving you a list of things that you still have to finish and how your needs can wait.
Self- care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Taking care of yourself as a mother is not only beneficial for you but for your spouse and children too. When you’re feeling relaxed and happy you’re able to be more present, enjoy your time with family. And not feel cranky and irritable because of all the tasks at hand. It’s important for your children to see that you have your own hobbies. And routine as children learn by seeing people and things around them. If you feel uncomfortable doing it for yourself, do it for your children.
You don’t want them to think that it’s okay to abuse your body, to not exercise, to not take out time for yourself and to keep giving, giving and giving.
Here are some things mothers can try to have a healthy balance –
SAY NO- If you’re feeling tired and can’t do a certain task start saying No.
ASK FOR HELP- Involve your husband and children in sharing the load at home. It not only reduces your burden but makes you feel supported and at the same time empowers your family to do things on their own.
SET ASIDE SOME TIME DAILY FOR YOURSELF- You can use this time to read, listen to music, sing, meditate or whatever it is that you enjoy doing.
EXERCISE- Staying healthy is very important.Healthy moms have healthy self-esteem. Doing physical and breathing exercises even if it’s for 30minutes a day can be a game-changer for your overall health, mood and energy levels.
SALT BATHS- Yes, I said baths. No only does it flush out used up energies from our system but leaves us feeling relaxed and revitalised.
ENERGY HEALING SPA – can be experienced in the comfort of your home. It balances the energy in one’s aura and chakras and helps to release energies of stress, energies causing aches and pains. 30 minutes of this experience can take care of your day.
TAKE TIME WITH YOUR PARTNER- It’s easy to get entangled in one’s role as a mother. But it’s equally important to have space and time for your relationship with your partner. Yes, there is a lockdown but holding hands, hugging each other, remembering stories from the past, doing things together can be done anywhere. Just the act of looking at each other is enough to fill one with a deep sense of bliss.
When your cup is filled with self love and care. What you pour out to the ones around you makes you feel energised and fulfilled.

This may seem like a simple wish on May 9th, 2021, but for a mother it means the world to her. With the pandemic and lockdown in action. Moms all across are ensuring the lockdown doesn’t take a toll on them and their children. From spending ample amount of time with their kids to exploring different tenets of motherhood. The journey seems like an adventure for all mothers out there. On Mother’s Day, fashiondesigners- Sarika Kakrania (Pink City), Saloni Panwar (Gulabo Jaipur), Karishma Mehra (Joolry), Ayushi Kanoi Gupta (Lovetobag) andPrerna Rajpal(AMARIS) share some sweet lockdown memories of 2020 and how Mother’s Day in 2021 is looking for them.
Motherhood demands you to rise above every challenge: Sarika Kakrania (Pink City)
Being a full-time working mom, Sarika Kakarnia, founder of label Pink City, always craved for some quality time with her kids. However, considering everyone’s packed schedule, it ended up happening less than she would like. The lockdown has helped her and her kids to catch up and bond together. Sarika says, “We bonded over various things including cooking, snuggling in bed, and watching some Netflix. Playing games such as cards, UNO, Sequence, taking evening strolls in our society considering anywhere outside is not safe in the current scenario. On some lucky days, we end up having heart to heart conversations which unwinds us.”
According to Sarika, some days have been really hard considering the new format of working and adapting to her business to endless household chores. With little to no help, constantly playing master chef to the entire family who is binging more than often due to boredom. However, Sarika believes that all of it has been absolutely worth it. “Motherhood demands you to rise above every challenge and if you asked me pre-lockdown if I could handle so much, I would say: Hell no. But life surprises us every day. As hectic as this time has been, it’s been worth every sweat I broke into to get things done for my kids,” expresses Sarika.
Making Memories: “My kids have been after me for years now to bring a dog home. I finally gave in to their plea and I am so glad I did. I now have a third child and the only furry one named Phoebe. And never imagined I will enjoy having her around as much as I do. Phoebe has been the best part of our family’s lockdown journey, making it easier with her adorable tricks,” says Sarika.
Tips on Motherhood: This lockdown is here to not only test our physical health, but also our mental and emotional strength. “Being a mom, you always have to self-inspect your energy because you need to safeguard your children’s sanity. It’s a complicated and confusing time for kids, who are suddenly confined at home; when that’s the last thing they want to do,” shares Sarika, adding, “Few things that have worked for me as a mom are living in the moment and not overthinking, practising gratitude and counting our blessings together, helping whoever we can in this tough time, teaching the kids how lucky we are to be able to do that. And most importantly: staying home, staying safe and wearing a mask whenever we have to step out for essentials.”
We must communicate with our kids just to see how they are taking this lockdown: Saloni Panwar (Gulabo Jaipur)
For new mom Saloni Panwar, founder of Gulabo Jaipur, this is her first Mother’s Day. “The lockdown with my baby boy has been great but tiring for sure. I spend most of my day with him or around him or doing something for him,” says Saloni Panwar. While motherhood is new for Panwar, she shares that she is learning at every step. She says, “Like at night, when I want to sleep, he wants to play and during the day when I have time to play with him, he sleeps. My day quickly goes by when I am with him.”
Making Memories: The 3 am play time is my favourite. Though I am sleepy, he is most active and playful at the time. These moments make for great memories and stories to share with my son in the future.
Tips on Motherhood: “Since I am a new mom, I don’t have as many tips for all the lovely mothers out there. But I would say keep your kid busy. Make sure they are doing something that stimulates their brain. We must communicate with our kids just to see how they are taking this lockdown and make sure they feel loved and protected,” shares Panwar.
My daughter understands to wait around when I am on work calls: Ayushi Kanoi Gupta (Lovetobag)
Since the advent of the first lockdown, Ayushi Kanoi Gupta, founder of Lovetobag, started consciously planning productive everyday activities for her little one. “Every day I set aside some time for organising activities, sourcing materials such as art and craft books. Activity books etc. and even planning out her schedule,” says Gupta, adding, “Fortunately, I have great help at home, without whom I couldn’t have kept my tiny tot on her toes. I spend some time with my Help to educate her about the various activities I plan for my daughter. Ultimately, it is a learning opportunity for my Help, who can now write her ABCs like a real boss.”
Making Memories: According to Ayushi Kanoi Guptathe one time when the COVID-19 surge began. She was in an absolute dilemma on how to go about my work-life and business. “I had absolutely no clue as to what to do and was stressed and anxiously walking around the house. My tiny toddler comes running to me and starts singing the song “Oh Beta Ji, kismat ki hawa kabhi naram, kabhi garam” out loud and out of nowhere. This caught me off guard. And I just couldn’t digest the coincidence of the lyrical meaning and of course the situation I was in (She learned the song off Alexa),” shares Ayushi Kanoi Gupta
Tips on Motherhood:
According to Ayushi everyday, her daughter is on an exploration mode, finding something or the other. For mommy’s out there, this could be your situation too, so curate a routine for her so it sets a structure for both of you. “My daughter understands to wait around when I am on work calls or when I am in a meeting. So, it has been a real breeze for me during the lockdown,” says Ayushi Kanoi Gupta, adding, “A staple part of our everyday routine has always been spending time during her bath time. And before her bedtime to discuss how our day was and of course, reading her favourite books.”
My kids always make a card for me on Mother’s Day: Karishma Mehra (Joolry)
For Karishma Mehra, founder of Joolry, the lockdown has been a boon for her as she gets time to spend with her kids. “My kids always make a card for me on Mother’s Day. I feel the lockdown has been more special as far as spending time with kids is concerned. So, every day has been great as I have them around,” says Karishma Mehra.
Making Memories:
“Recently, my son ordered something I wanted from Amazon and paid for it from his piggy bank. That gesture really touched me,” says Karishma Mehra. Tips on Motherhood: The one and only tip Karishma suggests is to feed the kids what they like to eat.
It’s a challenge to keep the family protected from all the gloom around us: Prerna Rajpal
For Prerna Rajpal, founder of Amaris, motherhood in the lockdown has been a breeze. As well as has been tough on her. A mother to a 11-year-old boy, while the lockdown gave her ample time to spend time with her son it also challenged her at every step. “The entire family was affected with COVID-19 last month. So currently, the lockdown is a mix of managing post COVID side effects. And channelising their energy by bonding over indoor board games, movies, baking and lots more”. Shares Prerna Rajpal, adding, “While we get tons of time together, it’s also a challenge to keep them protected from all the gloom and doom happening all around us and not let them get adversely affected.”
Making Memories:
Getting her first family picture together after beating COVID-19 is what Prerna Rajpal adores and cherishes the most. “After we recovered from COVID-19, we decided to celebrate being alive. The family picture we took together represents our safe recovery and being together in these tough times. It also reminds us that there is a lot to be grateful for,” expresses Prerna.
Tips on Motherhood:
Prerna Rajpal mentions a number of activities that can help break the monotony in your child’s life during the lockdown. Prerna suggests learning a new skill including taekwondo, musical instrument, robotics, language etc. “Encourage play dates over zoom calls (they miss their friends tremendously), watch light-hearted movies and TV series together. Don’t expose them to a lot of breaking news that TV channels are currently playing and let them enjoy and take it easy,” says Prerna, adding, “Don’t over structure every free minute and don’t set up too many rules.”
