My hair is falling badly. Is it due to the hard water in our home?

For hard water, put alum (phitkiri) in the bath water. After washing the hair, add the juice of a lemon to half a mug of water and use it as a last rinse. This restores the normal acid-alkaline balance. The other reasons for hair loss can be dandruff, oily scalp, stress, thyroid imbalance, nutritional deficiencies and hair damage caused by repeated dyeing, colouring, straightening, etc. Apply herbal hair tonic daily on the scalp and leave on. Apply coconut or olive oil once a week the night before shampoo. Avoid vigorous head massage. Diet is most important. Have a small bowl of sprouts daily and include fresh fruits, salads, leafy green vegetables, soyabean and curd in your diet.

Tell me how to avoid wrinkles and lines near eyes. Can I apply night cream? I have oily skin.

For the wrinkles and lines near eyes, you can daily apply pure almond oil sparingly around eyes and massage it lightly on the skin, using only the ring finger, for one minute under each eye. Massage in one direction only. Leave on for 15 minutes and wipe off gently with moist cotton wool. You can also apply potato juice or egg white on the area near eyes. Wash off gently with water after 20 minutes. Night cream should not be applied on oily skin. It will make the skin more oily and will also clog the pores and lead to pimples.

What make-up products should I use for an oily skin?

For an oily skin, apply astringent lotion after cleansing the skin. Wait for a few minutes and then use a water-based foundation. Add a drop of water to it for a lighter coverage. Or, avoid foundation and apply only compact powder, which is available in various shades. Select a beige shade of foundation and compact powder, which suits Indian skin tones better. Use powder blush-on and powder eye shadow.

How can I prevent kajal from smudging? How to remove make-up?

Apply less kajal and then apply a thin line of dark eye shadow over it, to avoid smudging. The proper way of removing make-up is to use a cleansing gel, or cleansing milk or lotion. Apply it on the face and then wipe the face with moist cotton wool. Wipe gently around eyes.

Vaccinating all above 18 years – A logical next step

The COVID 19 pandemic has put all our intelligence, scientific knowledge as well as mathematical expertise to use. All through the time, when Epidemiologists were busy dissecting the virus to understand its course of action, mathematicians have been charting strategies and models to tackle the pandemic in every aspect.

A mix of math and science: Well, this is no secret that mathematical modelling has been critical in revealing how contagious the novel Coronavirus is, how far we should stand from each other, how long an infected person might shed the virus, how a single strain spread from China to Europe to New York and then burst across globe and how to ‘flatten the curve’ to save millions of lives. In India, mathematical modelling has significantly helped the ICMR and the Ministry of Health in understanding the virus pattern and more. Now these mathematic models have been utilized to plan and strategize the vaccination drive too.

In keeping with these models, the first, second and the third phase of the vaccination program were initiated and implemented in India. However, the burden of the second wave is taking us by the storm. The state of Maharashtra has been worst hit. Though COVID19 is especially lethal for those over 65yrs and those with other comorbidities such as Obesity, Diabetes, etc., and yet is spread rapidly amongst young adults who are more likely to recover, Epidemiologists, the Task force, mathematicians, and the Government is now faced with two conflicting priorities when modeling for vaccines – preventing deaths and slowing transmission.

A dual approach to tackle COVID: In the state of Maharashtra, the government was compelled to impose strict restrictions, lockdown during weekends and night curfew to tackle the crisis. The state government has been urging people to follow the norms and stay indoors to decrease transmissions.

Currently the spike in the cases is seen more among younger people. Due to excessive socialization, parties, social gatherings, and offices slowly opening up, the cases among young adults have steeply risen. Of course, people above 45yrs and with comorbidities have a higher risk but, there is an urgent need to stem the growing numbers. Vaccinating everyone over 18yrs will significantly help tackle the severity of the crisis. At one end, the task force will continue providing medical aid and save lives, at the end more & more people can get vaccinated to reduce the severity and transmission rate. However, while there is a great challenge at hand, the state is geared up to tackle the situation.

We need to support the civic authorities, medical fraternity, and the community at large. Every progressive and safeguarded step will help further bring down the case load. It is however important to note that getting vaccinated does mean people can go about roaming without a mask. It may be noted that one may get infected even after receiving both the doses, and although the severity will be quite less, non-adherence to COVID-appropriate behavior will be detrimental to these efforts. Officials are constantly urging people to follow norms and regulations – social distancing, wearing a mask and continuing hygiene practices is a must.

The move will give a big boost to the young office goers who have been homebound due to the pandemic or have had to take risk of venturing out due to work purpose.

This decision by the central government to provide vaccination to all above 18 years comes is a progressive measure to save as many lives as possible, stem the rising numbers and safeguard the healthcare system.

The absence of mechanical coupling means a lower generation of friction and wear on the parts. Consequently, less power is needed to drive the escapement wheel and the oscillating system. Finally, yet importantly, silicon does not require lubrication, which enhances the long-term reliability of the escapement.

The 30^th Movement from Frederique Constant’s Manufacture

Because a traditional gear train cannot cope with the breakneck speed of a 40Hz regulator, Frederique Constant’s watchmakers designed a new base movement – automatic calibre FC-810. Capable of performing with the speed of the new silicon oscillator, the calibre also delivers a substantial 80-hour power reserve.

Slimline Monolithic Manufacture

The Frederique Constant Slimline Monolithic Manufacture, a three-hand with pointer date, is the first model to bear this groundbreaking oscillator. Presented in a 40mm round case, the new watch features an elegant, classic dial with a guilloché hobnail pattern, printed Roman numerals paired with Breguet-style hands. The pulsating oscillator of the watch is revealed in an aperture at 6 o’clock.

On the reverse side, an exhibition caseback offers an unimpeded view of the automatic FC-810 calibre. Its traditional decoration combines Geneva stripes with perlage, and the oscillating weight is openworked.

The model is available in three limited editions: 810 pieces in stainless steel with blue dial and 810 pieces in stainless steel with a silver colour dial with a retail price of EUR 4,495 and 81 pieces in 18k pink gold retailing for EUR 14,995.
