Interview with Floral Architect – Tomas De Bruyne

Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla, recently collaborated with world-renowned floral architect – Tomas De Bruyne for the transformation of the mall into a visual spectacle creating a mesmerizing winter wonderland at the mall with a stunning decor made of 2D snowflakes in clear acrylic, sky blue acrylic, and mirror finish. The Winter Mystique designed by Tomas De Bruyne is an artistic masterpiece that aims to celebrate the tenacity of the human spirit and the inner journey of the soul, which is as intricate and individualistic as the contours of a snowflake.

Retropop Lifestyle recently interacted with Tomas to know about his floral creation at Phoenix Marketcity Kurla. He gave some interesting views and insights about his experience with the Indian artists, his Design Sensibility and what we are all dealing with and what we should and could do in the time of Covid-19.

Share the significance of your floral art installations?

Phoenix Marketcity

To begin with, the whole concept of the Winter Mystique at Phoenix Marketcity was built around the formation of a unique snowflake which is a beautiful metaphor of the human spirit. Each individual snowflake follows slightly different paths from the sky to the ground and thus encounters slightly different atmospheric conditions along the way. The human spirit follows a similar pattern. We each meet our own adversities, joyful moments, milestone challenges and in the mist of whichever conditions we face; it is the uniqueness of the human spirit that always prevails.

Winter is a time when we always look back to what has happened and hope for a chance to a new beginning. It is a time of celebration, of aiming to do only good and of an introspective journey inside our individual soul. 2020 has been a year that completely shacked the entire world, yet it also taught us the important lesson that the human spirit is an enormous resource that we must always cultivate and nourish.

Collaborating with Phoenix Market city, Kurla to design these installations, how was the experience?

Phoenix Marketcity

Phoenix Marketcity has a lot space and the means to host an oversized floral installation is always a great pleasure as a creative at this place.  Collaborating with them to design the Winter Mystique installation has been again a great experience for me.  The mall is spacious and has a tastefull design, and it lends itself to my aesthetic vision seamlessly, and compliments the installation perfectly.  We have a common goal: creating that personal experience that touches people’s hearts.

How was your experience with the Indian artists?

India couldn’t find a better slogan for its country to reflect what the culture entails: “Incredible India”, meaning the extraordinary, impossible or difficult to believe. The rich culture and heritage of your country in combination of my country of the craft, skills and human labour is unique in the world. Add a little bit of ‘JUGAR’ and you feel yourself submerged in the incredible India.

Did you always want to be a floral designer? How did it happen?

I always knew I would do something creative, means and medium was unknown till I met my girlfriend who parents had a flower shop.  She was my first teacher and gave met the virus and love for flowers.    A conscious creative should be able to work with different medium, as it is only a vehicle to express your creativity.   For sure, the better you know your medium, the better you can communicate the expectations of your clients.

What is your design sensibility and USP?

That would have to be my concept approach within an architectural framework. The added value comes not only from my floral installations but also from the power of the space around it.  In my work, I envision the impact of the whole outcome instead of concentrating exclusively on “my installation”, as I always strive to give people a full experience, not merely a floral decoration, no matter how big which is what I have tried to do with the magnificent Winter Mystique at Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla.

I am committed to perform not only for my clients, but personally, as well. There is beautiful loyalty between my clients and myself as they are all very dear al to me. I put my soul in my creations and truthfully I stopped trying to make everybody like my work. I work for those people with whom I share an authentic connection and vice versa.

Then, I would say is staying with my expertise, which means my core business is on bringing Bespoke Floral Experiences Worldwide through a network of the finest free-lancers and vendors from the global industry. My task is to uplift each event with my experience and knowledge. I am a strong believer in specialized companies, having the passion to use that one skill which makes you unique and qualified to uplift each project.  The tailor-made designs we offer to our clients – whether private, event agencies or luxury brands – are innovative, elegant, and unique and display great craftsmanship.

What about the challenges you faced while working in India?

Getting more for less, meaning expectations versus reality is sometimes unrealistic.

How did you cope up with the Covid-19 crisis?

As most of the world, we also went in lockdown and events were not happening.  Considering that 90% of my projects are always abroad, you can imagine it was not an easy year on my company. Fortunately, I am a shareholder in another company as well, where I share together with a team of 10 people my expertise trough floral design master classes. So actually, the pandemic situation gave me time to concentrate on enhancing the floral education experiences we offer at European Master Certification. It was a great opportunity to roll out, finally, the curriculum in an online version. The first classes actually started in September 2020 and they showed great results. Introducing blended learning with the right online platform we can now cover the entire globe, which makes is possible for anybody who wants to become a conscious creative in the floral industry.

I have still kept close contact, virtually, with my clients, vendors and collaborators all over the world, planning projects, developing new solutions for the new times that came and focusing on being ready for the new events that for sure will follow.

Ask Shahnaz Husain

Frequently asked questions answered by Shahnaz Husain

I have small pimple like things on my forehead and chin. The beautician said they are blackheads. How to get rid of them?

Pimple- like spots occur on oily skin or oily areas of the skin. After washing the face in the morning, wipe these areas with an astringent lotion, using cotton wool. In the morning after washing the face, make a paste of baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) and water. Apply the paste on these areas and wash it off after 5 minutes. Apply sandalwood paste on these eruptions.

I have a problem of bad hair odour due to dandruff.

Shahnaz Husain

Wash the hair frequently, using less shampoo and rinsing well with water. You can also

add the juice of a lemon and half a cup of rose water to a mug of water and use as a last rinse after shampoo. Pour cologne on clean cloth. Wrap cloth around brush and brush hair with it. Removes oil and dirt and also adds fragrance. Henna treatments also remove odour.

My hair is very thin and I have dandruff. What should I do?

Wash your hair with a mild herbal shampoo three or four times a week, using less shampoo and rinsing very well with water. Half an hour before shampoo, apply two tablespoons apple cider vinegar on the scalp, massaging it lightly into the scalp. After shampoo, add two tablespoons apple cider vinegar to a mug of water and use as a last rinse. Once a week, heat olive oil and apply on the scalp at night. Leave on overnight. Next morning, apply the vinegar as advised half an hour before shampoo.  Apply non oily herbal hair tonic daily on the scalp at night, using cotton wool.

I heard that raw potato kept under the eyes will reduce dark circles. Will it work?

Mix cucumber juice and potato juice in equal quantities. Apply under eyes daily for 20 minutes. Wash off with water. Daily apply pure almond oil sparingly (very little quantity) around eyes and massage it lightly on the skin, using only the ring finger, for one minute under each eye. Massage in one direction only. Leave on for 15 minutes and wipe off gently with moist cotton wool. Before going out in the sun, apply a sunscreen lotion sparingly under the eyes. Add a drop of water to it before applying, to give a lighter coverage.

Interior designer, Sussanne Khan celebrates ten years of her store, The Charcoal Project with the launch of www.thecharcoalproject.com, an e-commerce venture that introduces India’s leading conceptual design store in a virtual environment. Modelled on the brand’s core design aesthetic of conceptualised interiors, the online platform features virtual mood board settings and showcases the complete in-house collection of crafted furniture as well as select product lines by prestigious global and Indian designers.

Sussanne Khan unveils a pret line to her existing collection. On offer will be arm and dining chairs, bar stools, seating, tables, hand tufted and digitally printed rugs, ottomans, stools, home accessories as well as desks, shelves and storage options for home office. As per the brand’s value mission, all items are meticulously crafted using metal, wood, natural fibre, concrete, geometric patterns and embellishments. The Charcoal Project presents a modern take on vintage vibe.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of The Charcoal Project, Sussanne Khan said, “The design industry has changed much in the past decade. In February 2011, we saw a rare opportunity when we launched The Charcoal Project, a retail concept that showcased a world of contemporaneous chic. Today in 2021, the brand now looks to the future in a digital space.  The pandemic taught us the importance of access and with the launch of this website we make our designs available to the whole world. Besides my own lines we will also showcase products carefully curated by me from brands I admire. I am sure aspirational customers will find much to love and admire.”

Distinguished by an organic approach to design and use of eclectic mix of materials to create spaces that evoke warmth, character and context, The Charcoal Project has delivered many conceptual projects in the world of residential private homes, destination villas, commercial offices and model show apartments for various leading real estate companies. It also designs and retails a line for furniture and home accessories.

About Sussanne Khan

Sussanne Khan has practised the art of design for 15 years. She is the founder of India’s leading conceptual interior design store, “The Charcoal Project”. The store came to life in 2011 and changed the meaning of curated interior design in India. The Charcoal Project is also a design studio that undertakes projects in interior design across the world.

A victim of a curious mind, Sussanne used her imagination and talents to create diverse design stories inspired by the history of art and architecture through the ages. Her signature is a seamless blending of industrial masculine tone with feminine classical shabby chic.

Sussanne Khan obtained an Associate Art Degree in Interior Design from Brooks College, Long Beach, California in the year 1995 and designed her first project in 1996 with a belief that luxury is about emotion and design is a tool.

In 2012, Sussanne, along with PreetaSukhtankar, founded thelabellife.com where she continues to lend her years of design experience to the e-commerce site as the style editor – House and Home. Soon followed a prestigious collaboration with YOO in 2015 where the international design company founded by international property entrepreneur John Hitchcox and Philippe Starck in 1999 welcomed her as one of the Creative Directors alongside Jade Jagger, Steve Leung among others.

Today, she straddles the world of fusion architecture, interior design play and original product design. All these disciplines always remain true to her foundation philosophy ‘It’s all in the details’. She coined a unique term that best describes her efforts in creativity “To charcoal”, or in other words, “To make a thing come alive”.

Sussanne’s design projects include private residences, retail spaces, corporate offices, destination villas and architectural concepts.

Mumbai’s 1st pediatric heart transplant of 2021

45yr-old Mumbaikar breathes life into a 15-yr old boy

~ Transplant enabled by Mumbai’s 3rd cadaveric donation at Fortis Hospital, Mulund ~

~ 15-year old student after his transplant will appear for board exams soon ~

A team of cardiac specialists at Fortis Hospital, Mulund led by Dr Dhananjay Malankar, Senior Consultant in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, successfully performed a lifesaving heart transplant on a 15-year old student from Mumbai. This feat became possible after the wife and mother of a 45-year old business owner from Mumbai consented to donate his organs. Earmarked as Mumbai’s 1st heart transplant 2021, the surgery was concluded in two and half hours.

The donor suffered from Catastrophic Posterior Circulation Infarct (Ischemic stroke). After his brain death, the family was counselled about Organ Donation, after which the patient’s wife and mother consented to donate; the organ retrieval and transplant process was initiated thereafter. Medical teams, nursing teams and Medical Social Workers worked in perfect tandem to enable the lifesaving surgeries.

“As much as this story brings hope of life to a young school-going boy and his parents, it also speaks of courage & commitment that our team exhibited to save a life in the nick of time. The young patient was admitted with us as his heart failure worsened. The donor’s family’s act of giving helped breathe new life into our young recipient”, said Dr Dhananjay Malankar, Senior Consultant in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery.

The young patient, a standard X student, suffered from Dilated Cardiomyopathy, a condition that gradually leads to heart failure. The child had lost a sibling to the same medical condition. The patient frequented the hospital from time to time due to his deteriorating condition. He was on the waiting list for a cardiac transplant for the past year. Moreover, during the pandemic getting a suitable donor became a tall task. The number of donations drastically fell during the pandemic, adding to the plight of people on the waiting list.

“Such acts of kindness, courage and medical excellence reflects the true spirit of Mumbai, as people come forward for the cause of organ donation & help those who live on the brink of death every day. We express our gratitude to the donor family, and salute the team who enabled the donation, and subsequent transplants with great precision”, said Dr S Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospitals Mumbai.

Dr Swati Garekar, Senior Consultant, Pediatric Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said “Dilated Cardiomyopathy is a bad disease to have, and this young man’s heart was irreversibly extremely weak & enlarged. It is heartening that our team was able to offer this lifesaving option of heart transplant to him. Worldwide, 5000 heart transplants are performed annually, of which about 500 are conducted on children. Heart transplant recipients are able to resume their normal life, but have to strictly adhere to their medications and be tested periodically for rejection & infection.”

“I lost my elder son when he was 13-years-old due to Dilated Cardiomyopathy. At that time, a heart transplant program did not exist in Mumbai. After a few months, I was advised to get my younger son screened and he too was diagnosed with the same heart condition, he needed a heart transplant to survive. I could not bear the thought of losing my only child. Travelled to Kerala to seek help for my son, when I learnt that Mumbai’s first heart transplant was done at Fortis Hospital. I reached out to the team of doctors here, I saw the light at the end of tunnel. We patiently waited, and my son finally got a new heart, a new life; thanks to the donor’s family for saving our son”, says the child’s father.

The 15-year old recipient was discharged over the weekend and will be able to give his board exams this year without missing a beat.

DR_JESAL_SHETH for covid 19 infection among children

The year 2021 brought new hope of life getting back to normal. The first step towards this was the launch of the vaccination drive. Likewise, the announcement of schools slowly opening doors to children. However, as much as this news brings joy, it is important for parents and teachers to understand the dos & don’ts of managing COVID19 infection amongst children. Also, weighing the risks and benefits of in-person schooling for children may mean different levels of social distancing based on a child’s age and developmental stage, which schools and parents must teach kids.

While we all know that there is still some time before vaccine becomes available to children, parents, teachers and school authorities will need to be doubly careful as they ensure safety of children in the company of their friends. COVID19 infection among children is like any other viral illness. We need to understand that the virus reacts and creates leads to different responses in different children. Every child does not become sick, and every child does not need hospitalisation. Therefore, close monitoring at home is important.

SYMPTOMS OF COVID19 INFECTION IN CHILDREN:

Many children develop symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal distress like fever, cough, cold, throat pain, severe body ache, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, and weakness.

IF YOUR CHILDREN CONTRACTS THE VIRUS, TAKE APPROPRIATE STEPS:

  • Develop a plan to protect the family and household members who are at risk of severe illness
  • Make sure that your emergency contact information and school pickup & drop-off information is updated
  • If that list includes anyone who is at risk of illness, consider adding an alternate contact
  • Find out how your school will communicate with families when a positive case or exposure to someone with COVID-19 happens, and how they plan to maintain student privacy
  • Monitor your kids regularly

Effective HOME MONITORING for Children:

Their temperature, pulse rate, oxygen levels and urine colour need to be checked every 4-6hrs. If the child is active between two fever episodes, taking enough oral liquids and passing clear urine, and if their blood O2 levels are more than 95%, then the child can be kept at home. Periodic teleconsultations with your Paediatrician can help parents be more vigilant to warning signs. Speak to your doctor if:

  • Persistent high-grade fever exists
  • If there are breathing difficulties
  • Finger pulse oximeter reads less than 95%
  • If the child is dull and weak
  • If there is dark coloured urine or less urine
  • Irritable or confusion among kids
  • If the child is sweating a lot and has unusual behaviour
  • If the child has insufficient oral intake is poor

And if there is persistent vomiting and loose motions

Such children should be immediately brought to COVID19 Emergency Room of your nearest hospital and should be physically assessed, and hospitalised if required. Timely action taken by parents and teachers (if the child is in school) can help save the child’s life.
