Fendi Couture Spring/Summer 2021

“Vain trifles as they seem, clothes have, they say, more important offices than to merely keep us warm. They change our view of the world and the world’s view of us.” Virginia Woolf, Orlando

 Bloomsbury to Borghese

Reflecting on transcendent romance and timeless creativity, for his debut Fendi collection Kim Jones draws on the renegade British sensibility of the Bloomsbury Group while paying homage to the storied history of the Roman maison.

 Inspiration

For Fendi Couture Spring / Summer 2021, seemingly diverse inspirations find common ground and are interwoven: the enduring allure of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell’s liberated creativity explored alongside the eternal language of Italian sculpture and Fendi’s foundational codes.

Adopting the Time-travelling, Binary-blurring Novel as a Central Motif

As Virginia Woolf wrote in Orlando: “Memory is the seamstress, and a capricious one at that.”

Temporalities are warped while exquisite femininity and masculine androgyny appear as fluid choices rather than innate realities. A love letter was written by Virginia Woolf to Vita Sackville-West in 1928 – only three years after Fendi was founded – Orlando’s literary conceits are directly interspersed throughout the collection: sometimes in the form of metal-bound book clutches, sometimes lines from the text inscribed into Mother of Pearl minaudières or leather boots. Extracts from letters written between Virginia and Vita during their decades-long courtship are read aloud by friends and family of Fendi throughout the Max Richter composition that scores the show.

Motifs -Revived and Recontextualised

Motifs discovered at Charleston farmhouse–the Sussex home of the Bloomsbury set, located only a short distance from where Jones spent much of his childhood – are revived and recontextualised through ornately beaded boots and hand-painted heels; the Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant frescoes which decorate its walls adapted into embroidered embellishments on gowns. “I like how this family of people–and particularly these two pioneering sisters–moved things forward,” notes Jones. “I admire the way that they lived their lives, the freedom that they created for themselves and the art that they left behind for the world.”

A Seamless Segue into Classical Italian Aesthetics

The hand-printed, marble-bound books published by Virginia and Leonard Woolf for Hogarth Press – displayed at the show’s accompanying literary exhibition–offer a seamless segue into classical Italian aesthetics. Mirroring the marble palette of Rome’s Galleria Borghese, whose Bernini sculptures inform the dramatic deshabillé drapery found in the collection, they showcase the harmony between the two movements (so fascinated was Vanessa Bell by Italian Classicism that she would paint in the Borghese gardens, or reprise Old Masters to hang on the walls of Charleston). Visible in woven jacquards and on silken gowns; through intarsia furs and hand-beaded tailoring, marbles become a key component in the collection’s visual language.

Fendi’s own History Appears as a Primary Source

Fendi’s own history, refracted through Jones’ contemporary perspective: the biographies of those who model the cast used to excavate the archives for formative sketches and decoration. The velvet ribbons of a vintage bag are transposed onto a new design; Karligraphy monograms taken from Lagerfeld’s final collection beaded onto boots.

The importance of family–both real and chosen–is celebrated through the cast who model the collection, who each inhabit glass vitrines transformed into rooms of their own. “Fendi represents artisanal quality of the highest order, and it is all about family,” Jones reflects. “It is in its third generation with a Fendi at its helm, and I am guest starring while bringing in the fourth. Here, I am surrounded by strong, powerful women who I love and respect, and want to bring their energy into what I do.”

Union Budget 2021-22 | Quote from Mr. Rajendra Agarwal

In lieu of the Union Budget 2021-22 announcement, here’s a quote from Mr. Rajendra Agarwal, Managing Director, Donear Industries Ltd., expressing his views-

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, like many other industries, the textile industry too underwent numerous challenges, impacting demand and supply, due to the change in consumer buying behaviour and the consumption pattern.
With the vision of establishing a USD 5 trillion economy, the manufacturing sector will have to grow in double digits and become a part of the global supply chain, as highlighted by the Hon’ble Finance Minister. Taking the above into consideration, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme had been launched. In addition to this, the budget has certainly opened up avenues to encourage global competition, attract large investments and boost employment generation via the launch of Mega Investment Textiles Park (MITRA), wherein, seven Textile parks will be established over the course of 3 years. Emphasising the Indian government’s initiative of Atmanirbhar Bharat, and with imports being drastically cut down, there is less opportunity for new entrants, which will in turn strengthen the position of local players (like us) who can fill these niches.
Additionally, the Union Budget 2021-22 also announced the bringing of nylon chain on par with polyester and other man-made fibers, reducing BCD rates on caprolactam, nylon chips and nylon fiber & yarn to 5%, aiding the textile industry.
Therefore, 2021-22 seems to be the year of revival for the textile industry as there are good tidings expected for the textile industry from manufacturing, consumption, employment generation and from a boosting demand standpoint.”

Riva Razdan’s debut novel Arzu -a fresh take on romantic-feminist fiction

Riva Razdan launches her debut novel ‘Arzu’ today, a witty, heart-warming story about a spunky young heiress finding her feet after heartbreak.

The insightful, enjoyable read is published by Hachette India and is perfectly timed for presentation just before Valentine’s Day. Complete with dreamy marriage proposals, finishing school catfights, sound economic theory, bossy aunts and a courageous heroine who decides to swim against the tide, the book is delightfully written with great attention to detail, describing perfectly the nuances of Indian society in the early 1990s when economic liberalization unfolded with dramatic flair.

ABOUT THE BOOK

After being dumped by her long-time boyfriend for a girl from a family with the ‘correct’ values, a heartbroken Arzu escapes to New York with her haughty aunt Parul, who is determined to find a suitable match for her niece. But little does Parul Bua know that Arzu is using her newfound independence in New York not to hook a rich bachelor, but to secretly study. Away from the eyes of Bombay society, Arzu becomes her own woman entirely skipping Finishing School to enrol in Columbia’s journalism programme, going on adventures with girls from the ‘wrong families’ and discovering her own capability as she fully understands the potential of 1991’s economic reforms for India. Filled with the fire of knowledge and confidence, Arzu soon finds herself on the brink of an idea that could change the nature of an entire industry back home.

Now, even as Arzu negotiates catty Finishing school fights and evades the charm of her many suitors in New York, she must prove her worth to her investors so as to silence her critics. The question remains: Can someone who has always played second fiddle to the men in her life discover how to become the heroine of her own story?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Arzu

The granddaughter of veteran film-maker Devendra Goel (Dus Lakh, Ek Phool Do Mali), Riva has been raised in a family of storytellers. She is  a recent graduate of New York University, where she studied with novelist Tishani Doshi, (The Pleasure Seekers) and Miguel Syjuco (Ilustrado). She has honed her storytelling skills in Paris, Florence, Abu Dhabi and New York, and the constant relocation in her formative years made her a relentless writer- an outsider trying to make sense of an ever-changing landscape by jotting it down in the fictional journeys of Heroines. The more she moved between cultures, the more she began to examine her own North Indian upbringing to realise that there was a lack of representation of strong-minded and ambitious millennial women in popular Indian fiction who also longed for romantic fulfilment. As a result, Riva decided to delve deep into the Indian society of her girlhood, to weave some wayward strands of its patriarchal fabric as conflicts in her stories and create Romantic-Feminist fiction that encourages, supports and comforts young Indian women.  Riva also explores her passion for storytelling in film, as a screenwriter with Anil Kapoor Films.

Says Riva, “My generation of women, generation Z, is a lucky one. We have been raised to respect agency and to expect equality as the norm in both romantic and professional relationships, but unfortunately most people are still unfamiliar with these concepts which often leads to conflict in relationships- both personal and professional- and hence delicate navigation on the part of the girl, to emerge victorious. I like to think that I am, in fiction, documenting the real life modern heroines I know, and weaving their conflicts into humorous tales that entertain, comfort and encourage other young Indian women so that they may continue to keep their standards as high as their heels.”

“Arzu is a classic coming of age story transposed with the sparkle of a fairy tale, and the result is a heroine with guts, charm and real bite” says Tishani Joshi, author of The Pleasure Seekers, under who’s tutelage Razdan sharpened her literary skills.

The novel is published by Hachette India and is now available on Amazon.
