Washington National Cathedral hosts a new art exhibit showcasing thousands of paper doves suspended from the Cathedral’s vaulted. 100-foot-high ceiling until May 2021. The “Les Colombes” exhibit is by German artist Michael Pendry, who has created similar works at Cathedrals around the world. And symbolizes the Biblical theme of hope and optimism heading into the new year after a very challenging 2020.
“The past year tried and tested us in ways none could have anticipated, bringing a deadly global pandemic. That has claimed 300,000 American lives as well as racial strife that has forced a long-overdue reckoning on justice and policing in our society,” said The Very Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith, dean of Washington National Cathedral. “While these issues are very much still with us, and will remain. So, we look ahead to the new year with hope for a brighter day and a new chapter. These doves, beautifully arranged to give new life to our Cathedral, embody our resolve to be kind to our fellow man and to do our part in making a better tomorrow.”
To talk about it more…
The exhibit includes more than 2,000 paper doves, designed to appear. Likewise, they are flying in a long, winding column through the Cathedral’s nave, where worship services are holding. The doves have appeared in Salisbury Cathedral in Salisbury, England; St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London; Mount Zion in Jerusalem; Heilig-Geist Viktualienmarkt in Munich; and Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.
“The ‘Les Colombes’ installation has found homes of some of the world’s most iconic sacred spaces, and now I’m thrilled to exhibit this piece in Washington National Cathedral, where it can challenge and engage new audiences, both virtually and, eventually, in person,” said Pendry. “It is a multimedia art installation that affects visitors on multiple sensory levels, and the doves featured in this piece symbolize peace and resilience, which are desperately needed in the troubled times we live in, especially as we reflect back on 2020.”
The Cathedral remains closed to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but once it is deemed safe to reopen, members of the public will be able to visit the Cathedral and see the exhibit. In the interim, a special section of the Cathedral’s website, www.cathedral.org/doves, will allow visitors to experience the exhibit virtually.

Art Centrix Space presents: ‘Peppery Soliloquies’ an art exhibition curated by Georgina Maddox, showcasing artworks by nine artists across the country that explores the historical and contemporary narratives around species.
Where – Art Centrix Space, Jain Farm, Behind Sector D2, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi-110070 When – on till 12th February to 12th March 2021, ( by appointment) Time – 11am- 6.00pm Monday through Saturday
Director and art connoisseur Monica Jain of Art Centrix Space presents an art show “Peppery Soliloquies” curated by Georgina Maddox. “Peppery Soliloquies” calls upon these magical, aphrodisiacal powers Spices that evoke a mélange of historical narratives, emotions, tastes, rituals, associations and aromas. The intention behind Peppery Soliloquies is to uncover and investigate the notions and texture of spice through the artworks, while enjoying the serendipitous coming together of these multiple perspectives in a visual medium that usually gives rise to new readings and intuitive interpretations.
The exhibition will feature works of nine artists including sculpturist Arunkumar H G, Karol Antao,Vasundhara Tewari Broota, Lavanya Mani, Kishore Chakraborty,Chetan Mevada, Khanjan Dalal, Meghna Patpatia and Vishwanath Kuttum. It has been estimated through the fields of archaeology, geology and science that the estimated watermark for humankind began to use spices as far back as 50,000 B.C. In different nations across the world spices have come into usage in different ways ranging from the everyday acts of cooking to the mythological and magical qualities of the spice. In a contemporary context where our bio-diversity is under risk it is important to revisit the history and the stories behind various spices, in a contemporary context because of the hidden cloak that is drawn around its production. Where much of the growing and farming of spices is dictated by the commercial undercurrent that affects the biodiversity of our planet. The monoculture that tends to become prevalent because of commerce.
“We have encouraged our artists to explore in contemporary times and trace out the voice of the following aspects our peppery soliloquies employing Art, references Literature, Ancient scripts, history and documents and of course contemporary times, where we examine the influence of species upon the following various aspects of life, from the everyday to the historical, from its aroma and flavour in food to its Ayurvedic usage, from the aphrodisiacal to the mythological, from religious aspects, its medicinal usage. During the Pandemic our artists have turned inwards and created works especially for the show that look at this aspect of the spice trail along the spice trail of India and East Asia,” says Georgina Maddox.
“Peppery stories, grandmas’ recipes, aromas, whiffs of spices. The all too familiar took on a new importance during the pandemic. While eating out was always flavourful, it’s the fragrance of home that became more fulfilling and enticing even as the aromas of distant lands became a distant memory. Art is always connected to life, what we see, observe and feel. Artists remain very connected to the earth, to feelings, thoughts, influences, life, situations, and society and their work reflects their sensitivity to these. This exhibition while incorporating diverse thoughts of the same concept also reflects how works can be more individualistic due to the pandemic. I think the aroma emanating from each work is even more powerful through memory and experience, through missing and savouring. Thus this show relives home and travels equally.” says Ms. Monica Jain, Curatorial Director of Art Centrix Space.
About the works:
Arunkumar H G who has worked on with papier-mâché sculptures of the Star Anise spice that is native to southern China and Vietnam and then came to India with Mughal cuisine, where it is called the chakri phool looks not just at the history of the Colonial around spices but also the contemporary issues around its production because of the commercial undercurrent that dictates and monopolies the biodiversity of our planet.
Karl Antao revisits the erotic nature of spices, where two recumbent flower pots morph into seed like structures and then pods of a flowering garlic plant. He has always found garlic as an interesting spice-root, because it is an aphrodisiac and it has medical properties. “I related it to the gift or space that mother nature offers the act of multiplying, reproducing which may bear fruits or not from the fusing of pollens, but sets a stage of happiness and consent with respect,” says the artist.
Vasundhara Tewari Broota approaches her recurring ‘acrobat’, figure with a new narrative. Here she creates a yogic figure performing the Nataraja Yogic Posture to create a narrative of a multitasking human who balances the fragmented worlds of home and society, who stabilities the spaces of interiority and exteriority, who takes that center-stage and yet is accommodating and understanding. In this work, the dual versions of ‘self’ and ‘other’, places a foot in the real world and another in that world which is spiritual.””I began playing on the idea of spices, herbs and the Ayurvedic healing rituals, to bring new ideas of gentleness to the work, by covering the figure in rose petals, indicating fragrance, beauty and a refreshing rose-tinted flavour,” says Tewari-Broota.
Khanjan Dalal’s work aims to examine the culture of cumin cultivation and lives of farmers in the district of Banaskantha –Gujarat. This district alone contributes to 25-30% of total cultivation of cumin in India. “As a work in progress I shall be adding more stories over the period of 1 or 2 years. The viewer(s) are encouraged to put their hands inside the sculpture to take out one postcard containing a pictured story, which becomes a takeaway part of the sculpture.
Lavanya Mani, famous for work with traditional Indian craft and textile techniques of kalamkari, embroidery, tie and dye, appliqué, batik etc. in conjunction with painting on cloth. Whilst re-envisioning the histories of colonial power dynamics and trade in her unique textile language, she powerfully creates a new narrative with the cloth as the storyteller. Often questioning the ideas of the ‘Orient’, she has re-contextualised Victorian travellers stories through her lens of discovering dye-making. Mani points out that the infrastructure built around the spice trade and other Colonial forms of exchange, straddled myth, science, natural history, traditional craft as well as art to draw attention to the complex systemic dynamics and interconnections that comprise a living planet.
Kishore Chakraborty explores the flavour of spice through the colour red. “A disillusioned Marxist and a typical Bengali I have enough masala (spice) in my life, where politics is an inhabitable legacy that we inherent by birth which ensnares our very existence and marks its presence through each quantum of thoughts,” says the artist.
Chetan Mevada’s works Market and Vyapara reference the cycle of growth, sale and consumption of the spices like Kastoori Methi, (Fenugreek Leaves), Pudhina (Mint), Bay Leaf and other spice crops indicate in hidden repetitive and geometric patterns as they appear half peeping out of the earth. “All the forms collaborate in my work of art and create interest and dialogue with the viewer. On a metaphoric level, the abstractions of buildings, plants and human body’s forms indicate the structure and patterns of the crops,” says the artist.
Meghna Patpatia’s painted drawings have their roots in a phenomenon called transverse orientation where all beings are drawn to light, drawing a parallel to the epoch of the Anthropocene in which we live today where consumerism is like a moth to a flame. The natural forms and creatures she renders repeatedly in these drawings are silent witnesses to the changing environs as nature is consumed by the flame of development.

Why blood donation is key to saving the lives of millions of Indians? Suryakant, a construction worker in Mumbai had the biggest nightmare during the lockdown. His 12-year-old daughter is a Thalassemia patient. A blood disorder that causes the body to produce less than normal levels of haemoglobin. She needed a blood transfusion every 2-3 weeks. And that was an exercise that Suryakant & his wife had for years together. But during the lockdown, things got rough; with no work, no financial aid and most public healthcare centres turned into COVID units. Getting a blood transfusion for free was not possible. He had to seek help at a centre where he spent all his savings. He had lost all hope and was about to return to his hometown when an angel extended support. Such was the story of people like Suryakant who faced a shortage of blood during the lockdown.
LACK OF SAFE BLOOD IN INDIA:
Access to safe blood has been a persistent problem in India. The rate of blood donation in the country amounts to only 1% of the population. And the pandemic only compounded the issue. Due to strict social distancing norms, cancellation of various blood drives, and low donor turnout due to COVID, India faced a huge shortage of blood. In April 2020, the Indian Red Cross Society raised an alarm that voluntary donation had fallen by almost 100%. While the rate of blood donation declined drastically, the requirement for blood remained constant. Shortage of blood in the past few months in say to be detrimental. To those who are in urgent need of blood. And blood components, like those with Thalassemia & severe Anaemia. Instances of severe blood loss, road traffic accidents, antepartum and postpartum haemorrhage, and patients needing urgent surgeries.
As this became a major cause of concern, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) issued guidelines for safe donation of blood during the ongoing pandemic. It states that blood donation can still be after following guidelines for the safety of both donors, and the drive organisers. Similarly, The National Blood Transfusion Council’s (NBTC) also issued guidelines that emphasized on the continuity of supply of safe blood and recommended reinstating both outdoor and in-house donations, in compliance with social distancing standards, biomedical-waste disposal rules and infection control guidelines. Guidelines state that people are at no risk of developing COVID-19 through the blood transfusion or via a blood donation procedure.
Moreover, in the last few months, the MoHFW and the state government of Maharashtra have been working on new protocols, encouraging people to donate blood. Having said that, this problem will only resolve if people overcome fear and come forward to donate blood.
GREATEST ACT OF GIVING:
Blood donation is the greatest act of kindness and at a time where the world is facing one of the biggest health crisis, it is fundamental to donate blood and ensure safer donation drives. However, most people are sceptical about blood donation and have many questions in their mind. Here are some answers to your queries that can help you save lives.
WHO CAN, AND CANNOT, DONATE BLOOD?
As per the National Blood Transfusion Council (NBTC), blood can be donated 28 days post COVID recover. or discharge from a treating facility or 28 days after home isolation ends. Moreover, very mild, mild, pre-symptomatic, moderate, and severe COVID-19 cases must be deferred for 28 days from donating blood after discharge from a treating facility or 28 days after the end of home isolation.
WHAT ARE SAFETY MEASURES TO BE IN CONSIDERATION BY BLOOD DONATION ORGANIZERS?
Social distancing measures should be following at all blood donation sites. These measures include physical distance, restriction on social norms of handshaking and hugging. Reducing overcrowding, managing blood donation couches such that one-metre distance is maintained between two blood collection areas, calling donors in a staggered manner.
For the collection of convalescent plasma, the guidelines stated that systems should be in place to enable re-entry of cured COVID-19 patients as donors for convalescent plasma for treatment of those affected by the novel coronavirus.
Blood donation centres and camp organizers should educate staff and donors on these measures and provide facilities like running water, soap, hand sanitisers, personal protective equipment, colour-coded dustbins.
Hand hygiene and coughing etiquette must be maintained strictly by all.
Also, the safe disposal of used gloves, masks, caps, and soiled material should be ensured. Protocols for proper cleanliness of the equipment used during the blood donation should be maintained.
Follow procedures for cleaning and disinfecting and increasing the frequency of these activities.
WHAT ARE THE PRECAUTIONS THAT DONORS NEED TO TAKE?
For donors it is quite simple, maintain good respiratory hygiene. COVID testing is not mandatory before blood donation, as transfusion associating COVID is very rare. However, if a person is experiencing fever or sorethroat in the past 1/2 weeks, he/she needs to report it before considering blood donation. All donors need to take universal precautions like social distancing measures, wearing mask and proper hand sanitisation during donation.
