The lack of sex education and reproductive health awareness gives rise to many controversies. And misconceptions about methods of contraception and associated medication. There are many risks that myths and misconceptions can bring along. For example, unfounded concerns or false perceptions deters men and women them from using a particular contraceptive method or any contraceptive altogether. This can ultimately lead to unwanted pregnancies and unnecessary physical as well as mental harm to the woman. However, with the right amount of education women can easily have a healthy sexual and reproductive life.
The biggest advantage of contraceptive pills is that they are very effective and have a very low failure rate when used correctly; other benefits include regular menstrual cycles and lighter flow. However, the need to take one pill daily can seem tedious for some women and can also lead to missed pills which adds to the failure rate. Therefore, women need to take responsibility of their reproductive health while consuming contraceptive consciously and carefully. All women must consult a Gynecologist before starting any new contraceptive, especially pills.
Learn the truths about 5 contraceptive myths that you should not believe
#ALL CONTRACEPTIVE PILLS LEAD TO WEIGHT GAIN: First generation contraceptive pills caused some temporary weight gain related to fluid retention in the body. However, newer formulations do not cause weight gain, rather they help with weight loss in patients who have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) along with other benefits.
#CONTRACEPTIVE PILLS LEAD TO ACNE OR ABNORMAL HAIR GROWTH: Newer contraceptive pill formulations with different Progesterone components, reduce Testosterone concentration and reduce the incidence of acne in patients with PCOS.
#IT IS ALL RIGHT TO MISS ONE OR MORE PILLS IN THE CYCLE: Missing pills during the cycle should not be taken lightly. It can lead to unexpected pregnancy due to contraception failure. Moreover, it can also cause spotting or mid-cycle bleeding to begin. One must always consult a Gynecologist if one or more pills have been missed to learn about what all precautions are to be taken in such an instance, and how to make sure unexpected pregnancies do not happen.
#CONTRACEPTIVE PILLS DAMAGE FERTILITY: There is no evidence that contraceptive pills affect fertility in any way. They only prevent ovulation and pregnancies.
#BIRTH CONTROL PILLS CAN BE STARTED WITHOUT ANY PRIOR EVALUATION OR RISK ASSESSMENT: Birth control pills are generally safe, but some people who have certain risk factors like having a genetic tendency for blood clot formation, or those who are obese or who smoke might not be suitable candidates for contraceptive pill use. Hence, one must always consult a doctor and get a risk evaluation before starting Oral Contraceptive Pills (OCP). Having said that, lots of confusion information is available on the internet, it tends to create fear among women. Here is what you can do to debunk these doubts.
¾ Getting the right information about contraceptives is crucial. The best way to get the correct information is through a medical resource coming from government websites, from international health organizations or from a hospital website
¾ Discuss your concerns with your Ob-Gyn about the use of any contraceptive method. Not every method suits everyone, and making an informed choice helps in finding the best fit for you and your partner
¾ Many of the myths associated with the birth control pill do not apply to every person. Each one of us is different and only you and your doctor can determine whether the pill (and which pill) is right for you. Be sure to ask your doctor any questions you have and discuss your concerns.

The year 2021 brought new hope of life getting back to normal. The first step towards this was the launch of the vaccination drive and the announcement of schools slowly opening doors to children. However, as much as this news brings joy, it is important for parents and teachers to understand the dos & don’ts of managing COVID19 infection amongst children. Weighing the risks and benefits of in-person schooling for children may mean different levels of social distancing based on a child’s age and developmental stage, which schools and parents must teach kids.
While we all know that there is still some time before vaccine becomes available to children, parents, teachers and school authorities will need to be doubly careful as they ensure safety of children in the company of their friends. COVID19 infection among children is like any other viral illness. We need to understand that the virus reacts and creates leads to different responses in different children. Every child does not become sick, and every child does not need hospitalisation. Therefore, close monitoring at home is important.
SYMPTOMS OF COVID19 INFECTION IN CHILDREN:
Many children develop symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal distress like fever, cough, cold, throat pain, sever body ache, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, and weakness.
IF YOUR CHILD CONTRACTS THE VIRUS, TAKE APPROPRIATE STEPS:
Develop a plan to protect family and household members who are at risk of severe illness
Make sure that your emergency contact information and school pickup & drop-off information is up to date
If that list includes anyone who is at risk of illness, consider adding an alternate contact
Find out how your school will communicate with families when a positive case or exposure to someone with COVID-19 happens, and how they plan to maintain student privacy
Monitor your kids regularly
Effective HOME MONITORING:
Children should be monitored at home. Their temperature, pulse rate, oxygen levels and urine colour need to be checked every 4-6hrs. If the child is active between two fever episodes, taking enough oral liquids and passing clear urine, and if their blood O2 levels are more than 95%, then the child can be kept at home. Periodic tele-consultations with your Paediatrician can help parents be more vigilant to warning signs. Speak to your doctor if:
Persistent high-grade fever exists
If there are breathing difficulties
Finger pulse oximeter reads less than 95%
If the child is dull and weak
If there is dark colour urine or less urine
Irritable or confusion among kids
If the child is sweating a lot and has unusual behaviour
If the child has insufficient oral intake is poor
And if there is persistent vomiting and loose motions
Such children should be immediately brought to COVID19 Emergency Room of your nearest hospital and should be physically assessed, and hospitalised if required. Timely action taken by parents and teachers (if the child is in school) can help save the child’s life.

It is no secret that late marriages, delay in pregnancies, stress, economic and academic aspirations amongst people, along with sedentary lifestyle have led to two-fold surge in fertility issues among men & women. While infertility is a growing problem among couples especially in metro cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi, IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and ART (Artificial Reproductive Technique) have served as a blessing in disguise.
In the past few years, the number of patients seeking IVF services has increased two-fold. While this can be attributed to lifestyle factors and delayed pregnancies, increasing prevalence of medical conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Endometriosis, Endometrial tuberculosis and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) and have also been the driving factors.
SO, IS THIS A SOCIETAL PROBLEM?
If you look at the present scenario, infertility is a public health burden that needs to be addressed seriously. But from a clinical perspective, fertility enhancement can be addressed in many ways. IVF is certainly, one of the many answers to this problem. However, people should know that IVF is not the only option available. A lot of other simple measures including planned or timed intercourse, Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), diagnostic & operative Hystero-Laparoscopy for Endometriosis, Fallopian Tube blockage etc. can be used. Even for the success of IVF procedures, several factors have to be considered. Having said that, let’s look at the lifestyle choices and its impact on reproductive health.
HOW LIFESTYLE CHOICES IMPACT REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH?
Today women spend more years in education, specializations, careers and are often close to 30’s even before they can think of marriage. They further want to delay pregnancy by few years till they settle well into their jobs and marital relations. Couples also want to be financially secure and independent before they extend the family.
Unfortunately, the biological clock doesn’t wait for anyone, and the ovarian reserve in women reduces with age. Also, the body’s capability to handle pregnancy without risk and complications reduces. We are often seeing reduction in the average sperm count & motility in men with increased age, stress, smoking, alcohol intake. A hectic lifestyle coupled with travel due to work. and a messed up work-life balance only add fuel to the fire. So by the time the couple is ready for conception they are hard pressed for time. The natural chance of conception is usually 10%, that means naturally a couple would take 10 -12 months to conceive. Unfortunately, our couples have no time or patience left. All this stress makes the act of love-making and conception very mechanical which further adds to marital stress and relationships.
SO HOW CAN FERTILITY BE IMPROVED THEN?
A lot can be done by counselling couples about simple techniques and planning intercourse around ovulation. I often ask my patients to take short holidays and go on dates at ovulation times. This reduces stress and they often come back with positive results themselves. A good diet, exercise and adequate sleep coupled with healthy lifestyle practices go a long way. I encourage them to quit smoking & alcohol too. I tell my patients to work towards a fit body & positive health, and to think they have signed up for a marathon as embarking on a pregnancy is certainly like a marathon itself! The basic tests and workup for fertility is done to ensure there are no major reproductive problems. This includes hormonal profile, ovulation study, tube testing, ultrasound and semen workup. Mentioned below are the periods when couples can opt for IVF:
Having ovulation problems
Fallopian tube damage/obstruction
Endometriosis
Pelvic adhesions
Poor semen quality
Unexplained infertility
Prolonged infertility
At the end of the day, reproductive health can be maintain by making healthy choices. It is always advise to make an informed choice on childbearing and parenting by discussing with your doctor during pre-marital, marital and preconception counselling sessions. People need to set their priorities right and be cognizant of the consequences and rewards of it.
