What You Need to Know About California Breweries

Golden State brewers started the craft beer movement four decades ago, and this forward-looking industry continues to innovate as it adapts to the new normal. California Breweries are now reopening following an extended closure to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 by taking an assortment of precautions to protect the health and safety of both the customers and their staff. So, this is the time to raise a glass to the Golden State’s incomparable craft beer scene.

Pioneered more than 40 years ago by such operations as Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico, Sonoma County’s New Albion Brewing Co., and San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing Co., California’s craft beer community has grown to more than 1,000 breweries covering every corner of the state—from the Humble Farmer Brewing Company near the Mexican border in the Imperial Valley to SeaQuake Brewing almost 1,000 miles to the north in Crescent City.

“California makes up a significant percentage of the breweries in the entire country,” says Leia Bailey, associate executive director of the California Craft Brewers Association. “These breweries are primarily small businesses—family own and family run.”

To cope with the coronavirus shutdown, Bailey says brewers practically had to reinvent their business models overnight by increasing shipping and delivery directly to consumers. “We’ve seen people find ways to bring beer to their communities,” she notes. “There have been some fun and creative ways that breweries have done that, and consumers seem to really enjoy it.”

But socializing while trying different beers is at the heart of the California breweries experience. And because many operations depend on customers coming through the front door for the bulk—sometimes as much as 90 percent—of their revenue, reopening is critical to the future of many of these businesses.

So the brewers association quickly made sure craft beermakers had easy access to the information they need to operate safely and to remain in compliance with evolving state guidelines. (For a quick sense of some of the measures breweries are employing, check out the websites for Golden Road Brewing, which operates in Los Angeles, Orange County, and Sacramento, and AleSmith Brewing Co. in San Diego.)

And be sure to familiarize yourself with the local guidelines and regulations in the destinations you intend to visit.

Adapting to Change

While beermakers have well-earned reputations as free spirits, Peter Hoey, cofounder and brewmaster at Sacramento’s Urban Roots Brewing & Smokehouse, explains that the nature of the business means they also have plenty of experience dealing with regulations.

“You’re talking about entrepreneurs,” Hoey says. “And within the California Breweries community, not only these entrepreneurs have to navigate the waters of opening a business, they open businesses that manufacture alcohol, which is one of the most highly regulate industries in the country. We know how to identify rules, adapt, and conform. This is what we do.

“So every week the new guidelines come out, we’re like, ‘All right, what are the guidelines? What are the changes, what’s different? Is there something we can do better?’ Then boom, we implement it.”

For Urban Roots, the new regulations have meant major changes to a hyper-social business model centered around gathering at large communal tables. While there’s a spacious outdoor patio, to maintain social distancing indoors, just four people can sit at the 12-foot-long tables. Instead of having long lines of customers to Urban Roots for its live-fire smoke meats and diverse beer selection, the brewery now takes reservations and a host greets walk-in customers. Add it all up and Urban Roots is operating at 30 percent capacity.

Escondido-based Stone Brewing Co., one of the country’s largest craft brewers, has also had to employ a reservation system at its locations in San Diego County, Pasadena, and Napa. Even before the pandemic, Stone started to implement a contactless ordering system that now helps minimize direct customer interaction with wait staff.

The precautions extend behind the scenes too. Workers receive thorough safety training and undergo temperature checks, while dishwashers receive extensive personal protective equipment. “We’re doing our best to protect the team,” says Gregg Frazer, Stone Brewing’s vice president of hospitality.

Maintaining Mutual Respect

Speaking of team, if the pandemic has one message, it’s that we’re all in this together—and that includes the customers at California breweries. Hoey says at Urban Roots, the menu lists the promises the brewery staff makes to ensure the health of patrons, including wearing masks, cleaning bathrooms every hour, and constantly changing gloves during service. Everything at tables is for one-time use.

But Urban Roots also asks customers to make promises of their own, such as refraining from wandering around the restaurant and mingling with other guests, and to remain at the table as much as possible. “That sort of partnership with our guests, rather than an adversarial dictating of rules, allows us to be in compliance and for them to have a good time,” he says.

Stone put up signage reminding customers of such precautions as wearing masks while stepping away from the table and encourages parents to keep their kids from running around without supervision. Stone also installed convenient sanitation stations and employs such measures as single-use menus and paper covers over beverage glasses as an added layer of protection.

Frazer says it’s all part of an effort to go the extra mile to create the best possible experience while maintaining a high level of safety. And so far, it’s working.

“The response from our fans has been, more than anything, ‘Thank you for reopening the California Breweries, thank you for being here. And thank you for taking those extra steps. We knew we could come to Stone and you would do it right.’”

Makeup Tips For Mature Skin

By Anubha Dawar

ANUBHA DAWAR for makeup tips

For every girl in the world, the first time experiencing makeup is in her early 10-12 age group with mom’s lipstick.. you remember how happy you felt in that moment? Well, I believe the excitement remains the same even as we grow up, we love to try new things on our face, mix and match a little and be whatever we wanna be through our makeup.
Celebrity makeup artist Anubha Dawar shares a few tips for women with ageing skin to glow brighter on every occasion.

• Start with your CTM routine.

It is very important to start on a clean face. Exfoliate your face properly and use a good moisturizer immediately. Use an eye cream to brighten and lift your under eye area.

• Prime your skin

A primer not only helps makeup to last throughout the day it also keeps foundation from settling into fine lines and wrinkles. Primers help your skin look more youthful.

• Choose the right base

Invest in hydrating and glowy foundation to get the perfect base. It is important to choose the colour which matches your neck. Use light formula foundation for makeup.

• Conceal the imperfections

For makeup get a lighter shade of concealer to hide marks and pigmentation, don’t forget to lift the the undereye and higher points of face with a concealer.

• Play up with eyes

Take a peach cream eyeshadow and blend it on your eyelids.Curl your eyelashes with an eyelash curler and coat it with mascara. Don’t forget to put highlighter in the inner corner of your eyes.

• For that natural flush

It is important to choose the right shade of blush. Something too dark or too light can age you more. Blend it on the apples of your cheek. Invest in a good blush pallete with both matte and shimmer shades.

• For pouty lips

Use a lip balm before using any lipstick on your lips. Dried and chapped lips are a big no no. Use a darker shade of lip pencil to line the lips and after that fill the lips with lipstick.

 Use a setting spray

It is important to use a setting spray if you’re wearing makeup for long hours. Seal everything with a setting spray. Your makeup would not smudge all day.

Apply curd or egg half an hour before shampoo. It gives body to the hair. For a fragrant hair rinse, add the juice of a lemon and half a cup of rose water to a mug of water and use as a last rinse after shampoo. A few drops of Eau de cologne can also be added to a mug of water and used as a last rinse. Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) helps to prevent body odour. Make a paste of baking soda and water and apply under the arms. Leave on for ten minutes and wash off with water. Or, mix a little baking soda with your talcum powder and apply under the arms, or on the feet. Add 2 drops of Tea Tree Oil to two tablespoons of water or rose water. Apply this under the arms with cotton wool.

I have pimples and dark spots on my back. Please tell me home made recipes.

Check if you have dandruff or oily hair. It leads to acne on the back. Apply sandalwood paste on the acne / pimples. Boil neem leaves over a low fire. Cool and strain. How to use amla, reetha and shikakai for my 9 year old daughter’s hair? Can I use shampoo also?

hair

Amla, reetha and shikakai can be used to wash the hair. Take one handful each of dried reetha, shikakai and amla. Add them to one litre of water and allow them to soak overnight. The next day, simmer the herbs with the water on a low fire, till the water reduces to half the quantity. Do not boil it on a high fire. Allow the mixture to cool and strain it through a clean cloth. Use the liquid to wash your hair. This quantity should be enough for four washes. Keep your home-made hair cleanser in the refrigerator for further use. Make small quantities at a time.
