EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF SOULFUL MUSIC WITH SOCIETY TEA’S #SOUNDSOFSOCIETY SEASON 2, EPISODE 5: ‘WIND BLOWS WHERE IT WANTS’

Society Tea, in association with Urban Beat Project, curated by Laiq Qureshi, release Episode 5 of the live musical web series  #SoundsofSociety, Season 2 https://soundsofsociety.in/. The episode features extremely talented musicians Mohamed Alnuma, Dilshad Khan and Raul Sengupta, orchestrating a beautiful blend of Indo-Mediterranean music and poetry, ‘Wind Blows Where It Wants’ – World Music at its finest.

Sounds of Society is a genre-free, no-rules, and an all-inclusive approach to presenting music-making and its associated performing arts. It is a great platform for musicians to showcase their grassroots approach to making music, in an entirely collaborative format. Sounds of Society – Season 2 has been shot with minimal fuss and equipment. The season will have edited as well as one-take videos to show audiences the true organic nature of each episode.

Wind Blows Where It Wants’, originally written by Mohamed Alnuma, is the song of the four elements, extracted from their conventional sense – where wind is the immanence of “what is”, water is the “process”, fire is what is given to “sense” and Earth is our “final destination”. Mohamed presents a quality of existential philosophy in his brand of Franco-Iraqi songwriting, which got a beautiful elevation by Dilshad Khan and Raul Sengupta as they blend in the sounds of Indian Classical music, that comes from the deeper understanding of their own traditions, and cultural heritage.

Mohamed Alnuma (a Franco-Iraqi Oud player and singer) is a Nomadic artist, a career that unfolds itself as a creative process based on a double articulation: Bringing the elsewhere to “here and now”, taking the “here and now” to the elsewhere. Beautiful musicians from various parts of the world have been gathered to embrace music and happiness along the way. “Al safa quartet ” was formed in Germany with Syrians and Turkish’s musicians. In France “Pechêurs de perles”. In Turkey “Hawa, the first wind” a project of bringing togther musicians from Turkey, Iran and India. In Greece “Roubayyat quartet”, In Israel “Jalajil”, In India “Hawa, time caravan” , all with various local and abroad musicians. Apart from the strictly musical projects, he co-founded with his wife Daniell Alnuma (dancer and choreographer), the Company Orientations in which he collaborate as musician and as an artistic director.

Dilshad Khan born in 1983 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He belongs to the Sikar Gharana of music which has given several stalwarts to Indian classical music, like the legendary Padma Bhushan Ustad Sultan Khan. He is the ninth generation to take up Sarangi. He has had the honour to perform with numerous artists like Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Trilok Gurtu, Sivamani, Pt. Anindo Chatterjee, Louis Banks, Abida Parveen, Hariharan, Pankaj Udhas, Shankar Mahadevan, Juliet Robertz, Mickey Hart, Taufiq Qureshi to name a few. He has played sarangi with Ustad Zakir Hussain in the album Global Drum Project which won the prestigious Grammy Award in 2009.

Born to an Indian father and a German mother, Raul Sengupta grew up in a household that was always bubbling with crossover sounds that were as varied as Rabindra sangeet and Western Classical music. Discovering his love for music at the age of 6, his journey into the same began with the drums at the Academy of Music in Germany. Since then he has travelled along varied and multicultural paths that have traversed the percussive traditions of Africa, Latin America and the Orient. In a return to his musical and cultural roots, he then travelled to Kolkata where he studied tabla under the guidance of Maestro Shankar Ghosh, one of India’s most eminent tabla players. He has toured worldwide with Prem Joshua, but also with artists like Ashraf Sharif Khan, Mahmood Sabri, Nassir Shamma, Renato Rozic, George Bishop, Archaic Pop Stuff, Amritan, Piirpauke.

An elated Karan Shah, Director, Society Tea said, “Music, an integral part of our lives, has the power of bringing together people across borders, just the way tea does. With Sounds of Society: Season 2, we aim at bringing soulful melodies by collaborating with versatile artists. This season has an amazing line-up and is all set to brew a flavourful experience, with the aim of etching music and tea onto the hearts of our audience. We strive towards keeping this spirit of innovation alive while spreading happiness.”

Produced by Urban Beat Project and curated by Laiq Qureshi, the collaborations in each episode represent the already existing and ever evolving synergies in the musical world. Much of what is captured is entirely spontaneous, without any concrete rehearsals. “Some of the best music is made when musicians come together without any real aim in mind, and when they are free of going anywhere particular with their music. Like in a jam. What comes out is pure and organic. This what we want to showcase.” says Laiq Qureshi, founder of Urban Beat Project.

Sounds of Society hopes to feature what music sounds like on the street, on a terrace, in your bedroom, on the beach, or in your backyard. The only real aim is to document the social and cultural milieu in which we live, by presenting the sounds of today.Artists featured so far are – DJ URI, Delhi Sultanate, Hang Massive, Delhi 2 Dublin, Vasuda Sharma, Gowri Jayakumar, Chandana Bala, Nush Lewis and more.

·  What are the challenges you faced when you joined this Industry?

Challenges were to connect with the right people who were doing genuine casting. As I don’t have a filmy background so it was very difficult to know who is genuine and who’s fake.

·  Can you tell us about your journey throughout?

It’s been a mix of ups and downs, with a great launch of Wasseypur but then I faced many lows since could not give any hit but then it is part of life. It;s a learning and evolving process.I am not from the industry so people like us have to learn everything on our own.

·  So what are your upcoming projects in which we can see more of Anuritta?

Ashram part -2 is releasing on 11th November. Then rocketry directed by R Madhavan is in pipeline. There are couple of very interesting web series.

Rapper Big Deal aka Samir Mohanty

Known rapper and performer Rapper Big Deal aka Samir Mohanty pays tribute to Bollywood’s King Khan with the release of his newest rap single ‘Shahrukh Khan Flow’.  A Most Wanted Records association, the new single releases worldwide on the date of the actor’s birthday coupled with a high-octane music video release. Samir gets candid in this exclusive interview with Retropop Lifestyle.

Tell us about your journey into music and how did you develop love and adoration for superstar Shahrukh Khan.

It all happened when I watched this movie starring Eminem called “8 Mile” for the first time. I fell in love with rap music instantly, and what started as a passion & hobby soon transitioned into a career. As a kid, I was bullied and teased a lot for looking different. I never fit in with the other kids at school, so, in my childish assumption, I felt like I would be accepted and loved by everybody if I became like SRK. That and also the fact that I was a huge fan of his movies as a kid.

Shahrukh Khan flow is a dedication to your favorite actor, how did you come up with this entire concept?

I make music from my life experiences and SRK Flow felt completely natural, therefore.

With the pandemic now, the overall scene of music has changed, everything is now digital and so is your launch, How do you cope with the change? I mean I don’t have much of a choice. It’s an ever-changing environment and we have to adapt or cease to survive. Plus digital is the future so the sooner we realize that, the better equipped we will be to march into the future.

What is the most important thing when it comes to curating music?

I think the emotions behind the song are what truly matter to me. If it’s coming from a real place, then I go with it and create it.

What are the challenges a rap of faces in comparison to composing commercial music?

Well, rap is almost mainstream now. It also is the biggest genre in the world right now. It’s only a matter of time when real rap will be commercial music in India.

You have named a lot many people In this song, although what your personal favourites?

Yes, indeed. I grew up to most of the people I have named like Shaktimaan, Hanumaan, Rajnikant. I also respect and admire people like Samir Bangara who was like a Godfather figure to me, so it was only right to give him a shout-out. Then there were other people like Sushant Singh Rajput, Abdul Kalam, Irfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor who I was a fan of for a long time.

What do we expect from Rapper Big Deal coming up in the near future?

My debut album is in the works. SRK Flow was the first single from the album and the second single should hit the speakers in a few weeks and I’m certain that’s really gonna shake things up. I’m so excited for what’s in store.

About Samir Mohanty

Born in Puri and raised in Darjeeling, the now Bengaluru based rapper has had a kinship to rapping ever since the age of 17. He has previously released his celebrated EP ‘One Kid with a Dream’, featuring the first-ever Odia Rap ‘Mu Heli Odia’ and the viral hit ‘Are you Indian’. Speaking about the new single Shahrukh Khan Flow, Big Deal shares “I was a huge Shahrukh Khan fan as a kid. I would dance and sing to many of his songs and wanted to be like him when I grew up. I had a difficult childhood where I was discriminated and picked on for looking different. Somehow, I felt I would fit in and not be an outsider by being like Shahrukh Khan because everyone loved SRK so much. This is my token of appreciation in the form of a song, a dedication to Shahrukh Khan for inspiring me. The song is also dedicated to Samir Bangara and Sushant Singh Rajput.

Toxic Relationships

Article by Sanjana Bafna Ranka, Founder of The Equilibrium

Every relationship has its own ebbs and flows. What seems like a fairy-tale beginning can have a ghastly end. A have-it-all partner can pan out to be a good-for-nothing person as the years’ pass by. People involved evolve with age and the relationship transposes as well

Being adjusting and accommodating are the necessities for a relationship to be long-lasting. But the difference in a toxic relationship is, it becomes an imposition and prepossession.

You may be stuck in a toxic relation if

Ø  You constantly feel drained and enervated when you are with that person.

Ø  You often question your own sanity because of the nasty blame-games.

Ø  It is always your fault.

Ø   Your amour propre gets chafed by fighting your battles all alone.

Ø  You feel cramped and fretful.

Ø  You avoid bringing up some topic because it may trigger him/her.

Ø  You just can’t afford to say a no. It is always his/her way or no way.

Ø  Meeting friends and having social life has become a distant dream.

Ø  Disagreements turn into nasty fights and it is never resolved.

Ø  You have gone a long way from yearning-for-love to yenning to be left at peace.

Ø  You’re constantly belittled in front of others and then blame yourself for not being able to take a joke.

Ø  You physically, emotionally, and physically hurt.

When the relationship turns bitter, we expect things to resolve on its own, or believe our partners will realize their mistakes and make amends. But more often than not that’s never the case when you are involved with a toxic person.

How can we desist it from pulling us down?

Ø  Accepting that you are in a difficult situation, dealing with an unhealthy relationship can help you regain your lost self-worth.

Ø  You are not responsible for other people’s emotions. It is more important to take responsibility for how we react in an unpleasant situation.

Ø  Control the urge to please that person. Nothing can appease such people.

Ø  If you are involved with an over-dependent person, try to set healthy boundaries and me-space.

Ø  Try not to react when belittled and stop feeding his/her ego.

Ø  Try physically distancing yourself from the other person by indulging in your favorite hobbies or finding a job for yourself.

Ø  Try explaining your feelings when he/she is in a receptive state.

Ø  Involving other family members or friends can ease the situation a bit.

But if the situation goes out of control and if physical abuse is involved it is better to seek professional help.

Frequently asked questions…

Answered by Shahnaz Husain

I have lots of blackheads and holes on my face. Kindly suggest a suitable face pack.

Blackheads and open pores occur on oily skin. After washing the face in the morning, wipe the blackhead prone areas with an astringent lotion, using cotton wool. Then, make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply the paste on the areas with blackheads and open pores daily and wash it off after 5 minutes. Mix oats with egg white and apply on these areas twice a week. Wash it off when it is dry.

I have a few pimples but I have a lot of marks left by them. How can I get rid of them and make my face bright?

Mix rice powder with curd and pinch of turmeric. Apply on the face twice a week and rub gently on the skin with small circular movements, especially on the pimple marks. Leave on for a few minutes and then wash off with water. Avoid applying on pimples, acne or rash. Twice a week, apply a face mask. Mix multani mitti with rose water and lemon juice into a paste. Apply on the entire face, avoiding the lips and area around eyes. Wash it off after half an hour. Mix together 2 teaspoons curd and pinch of turmeric. Apply on face daily and wash off with plenty of water.

Please suggest tips for dandruff and greasy scalp.

For dandruff, apply non-oily herbal hair tonic on the scalp daily, using cotton wool and leave on. Wash your hair with a mild herbal shampoo three times a week, using very little shampoo and rinsing very well with water. After shampoo, add two tablespoons apple cider vinegar to a mug of water and use as a last rinse. Include fresh fruits, raw salads, sprouts and yogurt in your daily diet. Drink plenty of water. Add the juice of a lemon to a glass of water and have it first thing in the morning.

Please suggest a remedy to tighten the skin under the chin.

Try the following exercise daily. First, open your mouth as wide as you possibly can. Now hold that position for about 10 seconds, then relax your mouth, and repeat a few more times. Daily massage the area under the chin with nourishing cream or almond oil. Using both hands, start from chin and go downwards, one hand following the other. The pressure should be downwards and not while bringing hands back to the chin.
