INTERVIEW

The Indian-American Shalini Vadhera, a well known entrepreneur in the beauty circle is all set to launch her beauty brand ‘Ready Set Jet’ for the Indian market. She gets candid in this exclusive interview.

What challenges did you face and how did you cope up ?

I faced a lot of challenges when I launched my earlier brands in Sephora and QVC never meeting a woman in the funding world or in a board room. Also at that time there were not a lot of resources for women to come together and I found it difficult to find women mentors. I also faced a lot of harassment and discrimination being a woman minority. I overcame this after having a spiritual experience with a guru and realizing that I had to take my experiences and empower women on a deeper level than just lipstick and eyeliner. I launched my women’s platform Power Beauty Living (which is now a Foundation) to bring women a community of mentor-ship for women by women, learning how to look and feel beautiful for confidence, and meditation and yoga tips for inner strength and clarity. I realized that we needed to start changing the conversation around women and empowering each other as a community was one way we could overcome some of the challenges we were all facing.

  • Why are you launching your brand in India?

Being Punjabi and spending so much of my childhood here, I always knew that I wanted to bring a brand to India. When I was working as a celebrity makeup artist in Hollywood and would visit India, it would frustrate me that even in your own country it was difficult to find colors that really celebrated and enhanced the Indian skin tones. After receiving the Mahatma Gandhi Award for my work in Leadership and Beauty, and after speaking with government officials and a lot of girls here, I knew it was time to bring everything I had learned in my career and my expertise in formulating unique beauty products for all skin tones to India.

  • Are you scared of competition?

No. I believe every brand or artist brings their own audience and there’s enough to go around for everyone. What we offer is a different and holistic approach to beauty.

  • As per you what are the Beauty Fauxpas in India?

For me I feel that skin lightening really sends the wrong message to women and their self esteem. I also tend to notice much darker and dull lip and nail colors here which can tend to age you. I hope to show Indian women some new shades and tricks to flatter their unique beauty.

  • What’s beauty according to you?

Happiness and confidence are the prettiest things you can wear. There’s nothing more beautiful than a woman who is happy and comfortable in her skin.

  • Beauty secrets which you discovered over a period of time, if you would like to share with us.

I have so many favorites. One for thick hard nails comes from the women of the Dominican Republic – they take a clove of chopped garlic add it to a bottle of clear nail polish and let its stew for a week. Then they use it a few times a week on their nails making their nails harder than gel nails.

I also love this hydrating face mask I learned from Zimbabwe. They take a handful of chopped okra, boil it until it becomes a slimy mushy consistency and then once cooled, apply to the face for 15 minutes. It adds instant hydration to dry skin and plumps up fine lines and wrinkles.

Here’s one I learned from the flight attendants on Singapore Airlines – for an instant face lift take one egg, beat it, add lemon juice, and then dip in a dry sheet mask or cotton wool. Apply to the face and let dry. Peel the mask off. Not only will it pull out any dirt or grime from your pores, but will also tighten your skin giving the appearance of a lift.

  • Any five beauty essentials?

A good anti-pollution moisture balm, a build able foundation, mascara,  lipstick, and a spritz of perfume

  • Beauty advice for the 20s 30s 40s 50s and above?

20’s – invest in a good skincare routine; have fun experimenting with colors and products

30’s – start focusing on self care more with a beauty from the inside out approach. Wear sunscreen, find one set of products that compliment your features that you can wear with anything no matter where you’re going. Sleep!!!

40’s- drink collagen, use good face oil before you sleep, and an anti-aging serum in the morning. Sunscreen is always important

50’s – Move into retinol based products and glycolic acid based products. Switch to Creme based cleansers and use a good neck cream alongside your night cream. Meditate, sleep and drink lots of water. Collagen and Silica are both great to add to your water.

  • Your first Beauty Memory?

Watching my mom put on her eyeliner. I was just a little girl and I still haven’t forgotten it.

  • What is next for you?

Taking everything I’ve done over the last 15 years in beauty and women empowerment and using beauty as a vehicle for global change. I’m excited to bring skills development alongside a global beauty brand to India. The best gift given to me was from my father at the age of 19 he sent me to India with a plane ticket and some money and told me to start my own company. Because of him I’m an entrepreneur. I hope to pass that gift on to the next girl.

Madhu Jain’s bamboo-silk Ikat catches attention of the US President and First Lady

It was an evening that will remain forever etched in the heart and mind of Madhu Jain, India’s foremost Crafts Revivalist and Textile Conservationist. As one among the handpicked 90 invitees to the exclusive sit-down state banquet hosted at Rashtrapati Bhavan by President Ram Nath Kovind and his wife in honour of US President Trump, it was a magical evening.

Not least because this turned out to be the perfect platform for Madhu Jain to hold forth with both the US President and First Lady Melania Trump about her path-breaking textile—Bamboo-Silk Ikat—the first 100% biodegradable textile of its kind in the world. A textile that has won her several awards, including the prestigious Nari Shakti Puraskar 2017—the “highest civilian honour for women” in India—presented by the President of India.

During the pre-dinner introduction with President Trump, Madhu discussed her label’s focus on environmentally-friendly fashion, to which the President responded positively, stating he hoped to see her sustainable textiles in America very soon and wished her every possible success. Over the course of her interaction with First Lady Melania Trump, Madhu found her extremely interested in Indian handlooms as a whole, and in the bamboo-silk Ikat outfit Jain was wearing, in particular! Suffice it to state that Ms Trump can expect to be gifted an organic Madhu Jain outfit in the very near future.

SUNNY LEONE IS ‘SKINNED’ IN NEW PETA INDIA AD LAUNCHED AT LAKMÉ FASHION WEEK’S SUSTAINABLE FASHION DAY

Actor Urges Fans to Ditch Leather by Wearing Vegan

At Lakmé Fashion Week’s Sustainable Fashion Day, Bollywood’s Sunny Leone unveiled her new ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India. It shows her skin being “torn off” – a reference to the fact that more than a billion cows, buffaloes, and other animals are tormented, killed, and skinned every year for the global toxic leather industry. The ad was shot by ace photographer Avinash Gowariker

The print campaign can be viewed and downloaded here, and the accompanying video interview can be viewed here and downloaded for broadcast here

“With so many wonderful vegan shoes, bags, and jackets to choose from, there’s no reason to choose to [h]urt the environment and take a life by wearing an animal’s skin,” says Leone. “After learning about the horrors of leather production from my friends at PETA India, I vow to save animals and the planet by kicking leather to the [kerb] and urge my fans to join me.”

Jaspreet Chandok, head of lifestyle business for IMG Reliance, said, Sustainability is one of our key conversations at Lakmé Fashion Week, with an entire day dedicated to it. This season we have made several strides in reducing our carbon footprint and will work towards a leather-free Sustainable Fashion Day next season! We are glad to partner with PETA India and look forward to their new campaign.”

Animals used for leather in India are often crammed into vehicles in such large numbers that their bones break. If they survive the journey to the slaughterhouse, their throats are cut in full view of other animals – and many are dismembered and skinned while they’re still conscious. To keep the skins from rotting, tanneries use a variety of caustic, toxic chemicals, which are often dumped directly into waterways. One of the most widely used chemicals in the tanning process is chromium, which can cause cancer in workers exposed to it. The waste from leather production also causes skin and respiratory disorders in people who work in and live near tanneries.

The economic slowdown fails to dent India’s appetite/love in the time of a recession? Valentines day witnesses record growth in Indians eating out and consumer spending: EazyDiner Study

It seems the slow down in the economy and the elections have had little impact on consumer spending for eating out / made sure that Love is celebrated even more fervently in 2020. EazyDiner, India’s leading restaurant reservation platform witnessed an 800%/8X surge in diners going to restaurants on Valentines Day in 2020 much to the delight of restaurants and hotels alike. Despite the slowdown and declining consumer spending, diners left no stone unturned when it comes to eating out. This year Valentine’s Day bookings even trumped the total number of bookings made on New Year’s Eve. The number of average diners on the 14th across India made was 3, which basically means that eat out was done in groups of 2’s or 4’s.

EazyDiner studied data (tables being booked, dishes ordered, average diner spends, coupons bought) from over 500,000 diners on the platform on the eve of Valentine’s day.

While India’s economic growth will slow to 5 per cent, compared to 6.8 per cent last year, consumer spending when it comes to celebrating key events continues to be on upswing much to the joy of hospitality industry. Occupancies for most hotels and restaurants were at 100% for both lunch and dinner as per data on EazyDiner’s LiveTable restaurant management app. Eating out during the day peaked during lunch and dinner at 1.30 pm and 9.30 pm respectively. In order to cater to this demand, restaurants that ran special offers at 12 noon and 7 pm were able to capitalize on two seatings for both lunch and dinner. Restaurants who hadn’t anticipated such demand could only sell one seating on a day as the demand surpassed a record number compared to valentines day in the last 5 years.

Most popular trends witnessed across diners in India:

  1. For lunch most of the people opted for Italian restaurants and for dinner – Chinese and Pan Asian cuisines were a big hit.

  2. Type of restaurant: 55% of the people booked upscale restaurants which are restaurants with an average cost per diner of over Rs. 1,000 whereas the average spend per diner in 2019 was Rs 829.

  3. 62% of EazyDiner Prime customers, who are American Express Centurion and Platinum, Citi Ultima and Prestige, IndusInd Pioneer and Axis Burgundy Reserve cardholders, went to luxury hotel restaurants or very high-end standalone restaurants.

  4. Most eating-out destinations on Valentine’s Day frequented by couples:

    1. CP, Cyberhub and Aerocity in Delhi;

    2. Kormangala, Indiranagar and Sarjapur in Bengaluru;

    3. BKC, Andheri(west) and Powai in Mumbai and Adyar,

    4. Phoenix Market City Mall and Nungambakkam in Chennai were the most popular

  5. Indians decided to be adventurous with their palate and opted for Italian during lunch while Chinese / Pan Asian remained the preferred option in the evening.

  6. Out of the beverages consumed on Valentine’s Day, these are the ones which stood out

    1. Grover’s La Reserve in the wine category

    2. Diageo’s Singleton was consumed the most at luxury and upscale restaurants

    3.  Gin cocktails were the preferred choice of white spirits while vodka and white rum was lagging behind significantly

  7. Delhi/NCR saw the highest number of bookings during the lunch period, whereas Bangalore topped the number of bookings made for Dinner on Valentine’s Day.
