Jaipur BookMark 2020

Inaugural Day Deep Dives Into Publishing Industry Trends

Bejewelled and turbaned, with characteristic flourish, vibrant Rajasthani musicians escorted guests arriving at the Durbar Hall, Diggi Palace to the inaugural event of Jaipur BookMark 2020. The auspicious sound of the conch shell heralded the opening even as H. E Jakob Frydenlund, Ambassador of Norway, Namita Gokhale and Neeta Gupta, Co-Directors of Jaipur BookMark, Sanjoy K. Roy, Managing Director of Teamwork Arts and Producer of Jaipur BookMark, Urvashi Butalia and Aditi Maheshawri Goyal lit the ceremonial lamp to open the festival.

Remarking on the lucky quality of the number 7, Jaipur BookMark Co-director Neeta Gupta welcomed all speakers and guests to the 7th edition of the Jaipur BookMark.

Jaipur BookMark Co-director Namita Gokhale highlighted the fact that the publishing industry and book trade have always been at core of the ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival from the time of its inception 13 years ago and that Jaipur BookMark was established to give particular focus to this key idea. In his inaugural address, Sanjoy K. Roy, Managing Director Teamwork Arts and Producer Jaipur BookMark, discussed the ways in which literature and translations make other languages accessible. The future of publishing, as he sees it, lies in translations, in bringing to readers stories that we wouldn’t have access to otherwise. This acquires even more significance in this era of migration and movement, when stories that root us help us reconnect and rediscover. Ambassador Jakob Frydenlund discussed the issues of promoting small languages in a big world and the importance of translations, not just to English but to other languages as well. Reflecting on the similar sound of the Norwegian word “sammen (together) and the Hindi word “samman” (respect), Frydenlund said JBM was an event that brought people together with respect.

 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY…

  • Keynote Address by Jo Lendle on publishing for the 2020 decade

Tom received his first Oscar Nomination after 19 years for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”

Tom Hanks, who won two consecutive Oscars for “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump” in the ’90s. Tom is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Oscar 2020. On January 13th Tom Hanks received his first Academy Award nomination after 19 years for his portrayal of children’s television creator Fred Rogers in the drama “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

On his nomination he said, ‘I’m honoured to be included with the calibre of actors such as Anthony Hopkins, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, and Brad Pitt. It will be a grand night.

On the movie, Tom Hanks estimated that he watched “about 8 million hours” of Mister Rogers programming.  “I saw every one that I could possibly see”. He explains “this challenge was different….When you are not delivering a punch line and you’re just trying to re-create who the man was, and the way the man thought, well, you end up starting over from whole cloth,”

The actor has won twice, but has not been nominated since 2001. He previously was nominated for performances in Cast Away (2001), Saving Private Ryan (1999) and Big (1989). Hanks won back-to-back Oscars for his work in Philadelphia (1994) and Forrest Gump (1995).

The actor said getting nominated for Oscars is “the same wonderful moment“.

You know, you always — you want to go to the pancake breakfast, you know? You want to be invited. You want to make the playoffs. And when the numbers come in and your peers are actually the one who give you that nod, I bow down and in humble submission to Divine Providence,” said Tom.

The 92nd Annual Academy Awards is set for Sunday, February 9 at the Dolby Theatre in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles. The award gala will be aired live on Star Movies on February 10 morning in India.

Shilpa Gupta’s artwork featured in Measure Your Existence at Rubin Museum, New York

“MEASURE YOUR EXISTENCE,”
A GROUP EXHIBITION ABOUT IMPERMANENCE,
OPENS FEBRUARY 7

Exhibition includes works by contemporary artists
Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Shilpa Gupta, Tehching Hsieh, Meiro Koizumi, Lee Mingwei, and Taryn Simon

Press Preview: February 6, 6:30–8:30 PM
Public Opening: February 7, 6:00–11:00 PM

Opening February 7 is Measure Your Existence,” a new group show organized by guest curator of contemporary art, Christine Starkman. The exhibition features six contemporary artists who address the fleeting nature of existence through performance, installation, film, sculpture, and photography. The artists interrogate the transitory nature of fate, relationships, borders, and more, and in doing so call attention to the importance and inherent power of the present moment. The exhibition is part of the Rubin Museum’s yearlong thematic exploration of impermanence and accepting change, a fundamental principle in Buddhist philosophy. “Measure Your Existence” will be on view from February 7 to August 10, 2020, and feature works by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Shilpa Gupta, Tehching Hsieh, Meiro Koizumi, Lee Mingwei, and Taryn Simon.

The artists in “Measure Your Existence” come from a broad range of philosophical and theoretical backgrounds, and collectively their work spans five decades, yet they all respond to history, change, duration, memory, loss, disappearance and reappearance. Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s “Untitled” (Placebo) (1991) has an ideal weight of 1,200 pounds. In this manifestation of the work, silver-wrapped hard candies are arranged as a large carpet on the gallery floor. Visitors can choose to take individual pieces of candy, making them active participants in the physical form that the work takes in this particular exhibition. While the candies will dwindle as individuals take from the work, the exhibitor can replenish the candies as they see fit.  “Untitled” (Placebo) can be understood as a means of registering the poetic boundaries between public and private, art and life, and the transitory nature of each moment. Similarly, ephemera and documentation from Tehching Hsieh’s “One Year Performance” (1980–81) highlight the passage of time and the disappearance of the self, as for a full year the artist marked every hour by punching a timecard in his studio. Hsieh documented the performance by taking a self-portrait next to the time clock at each hour.

Participation is at the heart of Lee Mingwei’s “The Letter Writing Project” (1998), which invites visitors to enter a booth and write letters of remembrance to a deceased or absent loved one, or write letters of forgiveness and gratitude. The work reflects on trust, the exchange of unspoken words, and the possibility of making amends. In Taryn Simon’s photographic and textual project “A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters I–IVIII” (2008–11), the external forces of territory, power, circumstance, and religion collide with the internal forces of psychological and physical inheritance. The work considers the fragile nature of survival, mapping the relationships among chance, blood, and other components of fate.
The disappearance of people and places haunts Shilpa Gupta’s “1:14:19 / 1188.5 Miles of Fenced Border — West, North-West / Data Update: Dec 31, 2007” (2011–12). When multiplied by the ratio in the title, the length of the white thread wound into a large oval-shaped object equals that of the fenced border between India and Pakistan. The static and poetic form of the artwork stands in contrast to the disputed, volatile border where national and social identifications shift and are reinforced.

“‘Measure Your Existence’ invites the viewer to experience the concept of impermanence through participation, co-creation, and reflecting on change, duration, and disappearance,” says guest curator Christine Starkman. “The artists make us aware of ourselves sensing the flow of time and change. Materiality is also at the heart of this show.”

As part of the exhibition, artist Lee Mingwei will give a Brainwave talk exploring the mechanics of grief on Saturday, February 29, at the Rubin Museum of Art.

In 2020 the Rubin’s exhibitions, programs, and experiences are unified in exploring the concept of impermanence. Drawing on a diverse range of sources and perspectives — from contemporary art to scientific theories to Buddhist philosophies — the Rubin explores the freedom and ease that comes from letting go of expectations and consciously living in the present.

Before taking over CityKart’s operations, he has previously worked with private equity fund TPG Capital-owned retail business, TPG Wholesale (Vishal Mega Mart) and Vishal Retail Ltd as Vice President.

  • Being headquartered in a metro city, how do you identify the fashion preferences of the customers in tier-2 and tier-3 cities?

These days, tier-2 and tier-3 cities are as fashion conscious as the metro cities. Both men and women are willing to explore beyond the traditional fashion inclinations. With our in-depth understanding of customer needs, thorough market research and customer’s response; we provide impeccable offerings for our buyers at the most affordable prices that justifies their both their requirements as well as their style sensibilities.

  • How would you describe your entrepreneurial journey? What were the challenges that you encountered during the course of establishing Citykart? What are your learnings from your journey so far?

Coming from a family lineage of clothing business, I always had a penchant for fashion and retail. Witnessing the highly under-penetrated organised retail in tier-2 and tier-3 cities and understanding the purchasing capacity of individuals led to the launch of Citykart. Citykart came into existence with an aim to make fashion aspiration of customers in non-metro cities accessible and affordable.

There were certain challenges like lack of skilled manpower, unorganised supply chain, unavailability of resources and inadequate distribution channels that we encountered in the course of establishment. What was evident was that the expectations of an individuals never end and so do the challenges. However, strategical thinking, hard work and dedication has helped us attain new heights for Citykart.

It is also very important to sell what we expect to buy as a customer rather than selling what we want to and this is what I have learned being in this business.

  • What is the one outstanding factor that differentiates you from your competitors?

Our motto at Citykart is People, Product and Experience. We believe in rendering a frictionless experience to our customers with high quality goods at the most affordable prices. At Citykart, we have armed all our resources to continuously deliver this promise of people, product and experience. From training our people to better manage customers’ expectation to delivering affordable products across all age groups, we are setting ourselves apart from the competition.

  • Different cities follow different fashion trends. How do you manage that?

The fashion preferences of people are constantly evolving. For us at Citykart, customer satisfaction is quintessential. Hence, we depute our teams to study the lifestyles of people in every city and observe their shopping patterns and needs before designing any new product. Customer feedback also gives us a sense of fashion tastes preferred by the customers in different cities.

  • Tell us about your latest collections.

With the approaching spring season, we will be coming up with our SS’20 collection incorporating trendy and comfortable outfits in floral and quirky prints and vibrant colours.

  • How big is your presence at the moment? What are your expansion plans?

Currently, we are present in 47 cities with around 53 stores in 4 states namely U.P., Bihar, Assam and Nagaland. Next, we intent to set our footprints in Orissa. Our expansion plan also includes marking our presence in tier-3 and tier-4 cities by opening of 30-35 more stores.

The Republic Day calls for the tri-color palette and we have curated the perfect way you can dress up, with our top designers sharing their go-to outfits for the memorable day. Check out the insider style tips from the ace designers to amp up your style!
The chic ivory
Keeping it simple, clean and chic, designer Bhaavya Bhatnagar of the brand Bhaavya Bhatnagar loves white for Republic Day. “My go-to outfit would be an ivory Chikkan kurta with cropped pants and a shawl!”
Combine them together

Women are dauntless, independent, free-spirited and the crowning glory of India. Designers Priyanka and Kavita Jain believe that Republic day is a celebration of the true spirit of independent India. The day fills them with immense pride and gives them a strong sense of being.
Kavita Jain loves the double-layered saffron ensemble detailed with hand embroidery & block printing. Priyanka Jain picks the subtle green ensemble enhanced with block printing & embroidery that represents peace.
The mix of classic and contemporary
Kunal Anil Tanna is known for his contemporary take on the classic silhouettes and textures of India. On this Republic Day, the designer feels a sense of pride that India today has evolved and has proved to be a progressive country at power with the developed countries. “To represent such an ideology my go-to outfit would be a classic Bandhgala suit with a hint of contemporary detailing.”
A Monotone Look
A classic twist to the tri-color would be monotone. Tanvi Salwani, the designer of the contemporary brand, Zwaan looks at Republic Day as a symbol of freedom and strength and it also guides an individual to free their thoughts. “I would wear a rust to orange color block hand-pleated gown as the strong Color block and cascading look of fabric relates to the strength and waviness of our tricolor flag.”
