The Beauty Benefits of Rose Water

By  Shahnaz  Husain

In India, the Rose is one of the best known plant products and has been prized for its beauty, fragrance and healing properties. History and legends tell us how Mughal Empresses added rose petals and oil to their baths and perfumes. In fact, oil of those is actually said to have been discovered by the Mughal Empress Nurjehan.

Rose water is one of the most powerful natural skin tonics. It not only tones the skin, but improves blood circulation to the skin surface. It is said to contain Vitamins A, C, D. E and B3. It suits all skin types, including sensitive skin and even acne conditions. Due to its cooling effect, it is ideal for Indian summers as a skin freshener.

The Beauty Benefits of Rose Water

If you wish to make rose water at home, take an enamel or steel vessel and put petals in it. For one cup of firmly packed petals, pour 2 cups hot (boiling) water. Cover and let the petals steep in the water till the liquid becomes cool. Strain the water and squeeze out liquid from the petals. Keep the rose water in an airtight jar in the fridge.

Further,

To tone the skin, chill rose water in a bowl. Using cotton wool, wipe the skin with it. Then pat the skin briskly.

To relieve dryness, add 2 to 3 drops of glycerine to one tablespoon of rose water and apply on the face. It moisturises the skin, without making it oily.

Add a little rose water to sandalwood paste and apply on pimples, acne or boils, to soothe and cure. It helps to reduce inflammation. Rose water can also be added to face packs and scrubs. . It mixes well with most other ingredients used in home-made packs, like honey, yogurt, oats, multani mitti, sandalwood paste and so on. Mix multani mitti with rose water into a paste and apply on the face to reduce oiliness and make the skin clear and bright.

Rose has such a gentle action that it can be used to rejuvenate the area around the eyes. Cotton wool pads, soaked in rose water, can be used over the eyes, like eye pads, to remove fatigue and brighten the eyes. It also helps to reduce puffiness.

Rose petals can be added to bath water, or even to warm or cool water for soaking the feet. In fact, spa treatments make use of petals, adding them to warm water for foot spa.

And has released two devotional albums, The Bhajan Project and Urban Temple.

She is now setting the stage to be one of the youngest female Indian Motivational Speakers.

Also,

Celebrating World Music Day with Indie Devotional melody

Here we are sharing Shivali Bhammer’s picks from her top bhajans on World Music Day. That she feels one should reminisce about in times like today. Because devotional music provides the soul a sense of calm and happiness.

Getting devotional!

My top three from my first album, The Bhajan Project, are: Jag Mein Sundar Hain do Naam, the Hanuman Chalisa and the Gayatri Mantra

Jag Mein Sundar Hain Do Naam was beautifully sung by Anup Jalota Ji. And he very graciously gave us the rights to reproduce it, it was nominated for best debut song at the Global Indian Music Awards however that isn’t really why it’s special. There is a very universal message to this bhajan, which is that despite the many names we have for God, or perhaps we don’t even believe in God but believe more in consciousness/prana, the names are equally beautiful. When I listen to this bhajan, I remind myself that I come from a philosophy that doesn’t seek to divide but through its many manifestations of deities, it has illustrated that Godliness can be found within everything.

When I was a child my great-grandmother (Mota Ba) would insist that we recite the Hanuman Chalisaevery time we were in the car and my father has always told me that the Hanuman Chalisa has protected him – and I have seen that. In such turbulent times we really need to tap into our inner strength, Hanuman is the ultimate friend and devotee. My rendition of the Hanuman Chalisa is pretty fast and upbeat because it is designed for you to be able to listen to it anytime anywhere, even if you’re running, or to help your kids learn it since it is rather catchy.

Further,

The Gayatri Mantra was written by Sage Vishvamitra. The Sage was born as King Kaushik but upon seeing Sage Vasistha’s power, he gave up his kingdom and decided he too could be a Brahmarishi. However since he was not born into that role, it wasn’t considered possible. Through Vishvamatra’s sheer persistence, effort and self-belief, he finally achieved his goal and was given the name Vishvamitra (friend to all) by Saraswati Ji. The Gayatri Mantragives us the power to acknowledge our own vital energy. It will help the listener feel calm and diffuse any negative thought patterns you may have. When you listen to the Gaytri Mantra try and identify with the sun and infinite light.

Some bonus favourites! On my second albumUrban Temple; my top three are Shivoham, Aum Namah Bhagavate Vasudevaya, and Vaishnava JanatoShivoham will remind you to be in a state of meditation and poise like Lord Shiva. The Vishnu mantra will enable you to surrender and tap into devotional love, and Vaishnava Janato will remind you of your higher ideals and morals. Humanity needs all of us to pull together. There is no one who is above us, nor beneath us. You may feel differences with others due to upbringing, culture, religion, etc. but these are very superficial. Vaishnava Janato reminds us to be compassionate towards everyone.

The beauty of bhajans is that they are a source and force of positivity. They speak only of good things, and when you listen to that, even if you are not registering it, it will seep into your subconscious and fill you with love. Links to her songs:

Trends Post Covid- Gym or Get fit at home?

By Vaibhav Somani

The pandemic induced lockdown has had an immense impact on the physical activities of people. The lockdown measures which were imposed by the government had a sizable impact on all physical activities with gym, recreational centres, stadiums and sports clubs being closed. This led to more people opting for some form of exercise at home.

Most health experts have always recommended that individuals need 75-150 minutes of vigorous physical activity per day to stay healthy. Sedentary behavior, poor dietary habits and physical inactivity can lead to various health problems. That’s where we noticed the changing trends in the growth of Yoga and home gyms across the nation.

The unlocking process will start phase wise in different parts of the country. Irrespective of gyms and sports complexes being open in future, one must be conscious of indulging in physical exercise to stay healthy. And whether you decide to work from home or from an external physical office, you can consider these key trends to remain mentally and physically upbeat.

·         Gym Expenses

A lot of people have invested in equipment and infrastructure to set up home gyms during the lockdown period and it is but logical to continue with these exercises at home and make the best of the investment you have made. Home fitness or yoga is the best way to get fit without joining a health club, provided you are disciplined and do it consistently. To create a  home gym, all you need is fit balls, dumbbells, Jumping rope, exercise bands or tubing, and push-up bars as home gym equipment. This is inexpensive compared to the kind of money you would spend on fancy gyms and the best part is that your housemates/family members can utilise these equipment too.

·         Time Flexibility

In today’s world, the reality is that  many people do not have the time to go and make use of facilities available to them. At home, you can choose the timing of the workout that best fits your schedule. Working remotely gives you an ample amount of time to just roll out of bed and work out. Getting fit at home will also save driving time to and from the gym, changing in the locker room, waiting for equipment to get free, etc. All of that often adds up to more time than your actual workout!

·         No Crowds

During the ongoing pandemic, people have been advised to maintain social distancing. And the best way to avoid crowded locations, is to do yoga or workout at home and ensure your and your family’s safety.

·         Focus on Your Workout

There can be a lot of disturbance at the gym. People wanting to chat with you, or sometimes people seek your help in weight lifting. At home, no one is there to disturb you and you could be able to better focus on your workout routine and benefit from a more efficient workout. There is multiple content in the digital space to help you with your workout, whether you are a beginner or a professional athlete.

·         You Pick the Music

Everyone has a different taste in music, even when it comes to gym music. Music is definitely a strong motivating factor while exercising. But many times the gym may not match up to your workout music taste. Home outs enable you to choose your own music and burn calories.  Also you will always have an option to either use your earbuds or not.

·         Wear What You Want

Working out at home allows you to wear clothes according to your preference. At home, no one is going to judge, if you are wearing a shabby  t-shirt or some old sweatpants to work out. The only thing you should worry about is getting some sweat during the exercise regime.

·         Fewer Germs

Gyms are the most contagious place to get infected, and the hygiene parameters are often not met in most gyms.  There’s nothing worse than going to your favorite piece of equipment at the gym only to find the previous user left you a nice puddle of sweat. Commercial gyms have an ample amount of germs, from the cardio equipment to the benches to the weights. At home, you at least know who has used the equipment and can control how clean you keep it.

If you are a regular gym-goer, then that’s great and you should keep it up! But, if going to the gym is a barrier to your fitness and you have already started some exercise regime at home then consider starting a home gym. As they say, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Celebrating World Music Day

Every year British Asian pop star Arzutraa makes sure to celebrate World Music Day in her own special way. On this day, the pop star especially spends more time being closer to music than usual. She also makes it a point to interact with her fans from all around the world and share more positivity about music and how it can help everyone find a light of immense positivity and hope.

music

Speaking about the importance of music in her life Arzutraa says, “For me the meaning of music is Meditation, Uplifting the Soul, Immense Positivity and A Cure above all else. Every alphabet of the word ‘Music’ has a meaning in itself which is not only just said, but many psychologists all have proved it as well. In this world where everyone is dealing with all kinds of stress and issues whether due to pandemic or any other reasons, music can act like a ray of positivity and hope. When I tested positive for Covid-19, it was what kept me going and kept my mental health good. I am a firm believer of music acting as a cure not only for me but also for everyone and I trust that the world is a better place with music.”

music

Speaking about how she developed her interest in music, the singer says, “I was obsessed with Bollywood right from my childhood. At my home we always used to hear songs from Lata Ji, Asha Ji, Kishore Da, Rafi Sahab etc. Hence my liking towards Bollywood songs was from the start. Although I did not understand the lyrics, I did get attracted and enjoyed the melodies of the songs. That is when I first developed my love for Bollywood music. That’s when I decided that when I sing my songs will be in Hindi but many of my peers said that I must sing in English language only because I didn’t know Hindi whatsoever. Still I decided otherwise and I spent hours and days and an entire decade practising Hindi pronunciations by hearing Shreya Ghoshal and Lata ji’s songs and slowly I learnt the language. That’s how I started my journey and here I am today being the only Indian singer to have launched 2 albums in one year. One of my major inspirations for this has been my fans and I really thank them and dearly love them all.”

Arzutraa hopes to continue spreading the message of peace, love and hope with her music all around the world through her 3rd Album which is currently in flight.

Purva Mantri’s ‘The Papa Song’

Tough times and struggles decide your fate, this is most commonly heard but it stands true in the case of singer and performer Purva Mantri. In spite of the lockdown and various challenges, she has always believed in putting her best foot forward with her music.

Not many would know that she along with her father has taken up the responsibility of an entire village close to Mumbai by the name of Chinchpada in the Palghar district of Maharashtra. From taking care of their basic needs to education and sanitization she has actively been a part with the support and encouragement of a family.
Not only that, on her professional front she has been a part of the Indian Music Pro League fighting battles and wars of music along with some of the legends of the music industry like Mika Singh, Shaan, Kailash Kher, and many others.

In fact her recent release for Mother’s Day caught waves. She had released a song for Father’s Day too ‘The Papa Song’. The song pictures the delicate relationship between a daughter and father and set against a backdrop of emotions. While this was released much earlier, this Father’s Day she revives and showcases a new look on her digital platforms and gives you a glimpse of continuous love and affection for a father.

“Since a very young age my dad has been extremely motivating and encouraging irrespective of the fact that we do not come from a Bollywood or entertainment background. My father has been a pillar of strength and it’s only due to his thoughts I’ve been able to achieve everything today. My song ‘The Papa Song’ is an evergreen song and I would not specially wait for Father’s Day to sing it. I can sing it every single day, he is special to me every single day and I do not need an occasion for that”
