Home-Made Clay Packs for Smooth Skin

By Shahnaz Husain

Applying packs is an integral part of skin care, as it is an ideal way of preserving the good health of the skin. Clay is a common ingredient of home-made mud packs. Fuller’s Earth (Multani Mitti) and Kaolin are most commonly used. Bentonite is also used in formulating packs, while activated charcoal may be added. Clays have a drying effect, so moisturizing ingredients like honey, aloe vera, fruit pulp should be added to mud-packs.

Fuller’s Earth, or multani mitti, is easily available. A natural clay, it is white or light beige in colour and contains several minerals. It is of particular benefit to oily skins, as it absorbs and reduces oiliness from the skin surface. It also refines the pores and tightens the skin. In fact, it helps acne and pimple prone skin and can be used along with sandalwood, neem, mint, etc. It becomes dry when applied on the skin, tightening the skin and serving the purpose of a useful face pack.

Kaolin clay reduces oiliness and purifies the skin by drawing out toxins. It has a cleansing and gentle effect on the skin. For normal to dry and normal to oily skin, mix 1 teaspoon Kaolin with aloe vera gel into a paste. Apply on the face, avoiding the lips and area around the eyes. Wash it off after 15 minutes with plain water. If there is acne, add 2 drops of Tea Tree Oil to the mixture.

Just Me Mixed Fruit Face Pack

For oily skin: Mix Fuller’s Earth (multani mitti) with rose water into a paste and apply on the face, avoiding the lips and area around the eyes. Wash it off when it is dry.

Mix 2 teaspoons of Kaolin powder, with 2 teaspoons rose water, half teaspoon pure glycerine and a pinch of turmeric. Apply on oily, pimple prone skin and wash off when it dries, or after 15 minutes.

Activated charcoal can be used in mud packs to cleanse and detoxify the skin. For oily skin, mix one teaspoon each of Fuller’s Earth and activated charcoal powder with green tea. Soak green tea-bag in hot water. Cool and add the water to mix the pack. Wash off after 15 minutes.

To discourage blackheads and reduce oiliness, mix one teaspoon each of Fuller’s Earth, baking soda and activated charcoal. Add rose water to make a paste. Apply on the face, avoiding the lips and area around the eyes. Wash it off after 15 minutes.

ETIHAD AIRWAYS PARTNERS WITH LOCALLY BASED ARTISTS

TO UPCYCLE AIRCRAFT PARTS

ETIHAD AIRWAYS PARTNERS WITH LOCALLY BASED ARTISTS TO UPCYCLE AIRCRAFT PARTS

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates. Has partnered with local designers to upcycle obsolete aircraft cabin interiors into pieces of art. Further, as an environmentally friendly alternative to dealing with waste.

Carpet and fabric rolls, emergency equipment, sidewalls and windows. Also, Economy and Business class seats are just some of the old aircraft parts. Azza Al Qubaisi and Christine Wilson used to design art installations for Etihad Airways.

Terry Daly, Executive Director Guest Experience, Brand & Marketing said: “End-of-life parts that were destined for landfill have been repurposed into beautiful art installations. By skilled artists who used rare and unwanted aircraft scraps.

“By collaborating with artists from the local community airways, our goal is to not only showcase the talent within the region. But to further encourage sustainable innovation that’s good for the environment”.

Born in Abu Dhabi, Emirati sculptor Azza Al Qubaisi’s first art piece used seat floor mounting rails as a building motif to create symmetric geometric formations. That is being in display free-standing or suspended from the ceiling.

ETIHAD AIRWAYS PARTNERS WITH LOCALLY BASED ARTISTS TO UPCYCLE AIRCRAFT PARTS

“Visiting Etihad’s warehouse of aircraft parts during the COVID-19 pandemic brought back memories. Likewise, of travelling around the world and discovering different cultures. I was thrilled to have unlimited access to amazing materials. That I could upcycle or melt into art for my ‘Seeking Identity’ sculpture series.

“After deconstructing some seats, I have a bigger appreciation for the ergonomics and technology that goes into them – there are hundreds of pieces. I’m already working on a second piece of art by melting and casting the scrap materials I didn’t use for my first installation and I can’t wait to share it with the world,” said Azza.

More into it…

Using aircraft curtains, wall panels, life jackets and cabin interiors. Christine Wilson, an emerging artist from Ireland based in Dubai. Designed a multidimensional upcycled art piece to encapsulate a textural zeitgeist of Etihad.

“Upon reflection and consideration, we want to remind travellers that 2020 should be remembered for more than the difficulty of COVID-19 times. ‘Aintiqal /انتقال’ is a visual reflection of the Abu Dhabi skyline and depicts the incredible landmark achievements of the UAE’s space programme. It represents national pride and reminds us of new beginnings and a new journey,” said Christine.

Inspired by nature with a passion for the environment, Christine founded her ‘covid-couture’ business. At the start of the global pandemic to play her part in remaking the world and living a sustainable life.

Etihad is displaying the art pieces at Etihad Headquarters and hopes to commission similar work in the future.

How can you care for your heart health during winters?

By Dr Zakia Khan, Senior Consultant-Interventional Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan

As temperatures begin to fall, your risk of a Heart Attack begins to climb, yes certainly! Cold weather can create a perfect storm of risk factors for cardiovascular problems. Here is what you should know about your heart health.

How does cold weather affect heart health?

Cold weather can decrease the supply of oxygen-rich blood to your Heart muscle. And it can put you in situations that force your heart to work harder; as a result, your heart demands more oxygen-rich blood. Lesser supply of oxygen to the heart coupled with a greater demand for oxygen by the Heart-sets you up for a Heart Attack. The cold can also increase the risk of developing blood clots, which again could lead to a Heart Attack or Stroke.

Cold weather induces exertion and lead to heart failure.

Cold weather makes your heart work harder to keep your body warm. Your blood vessels constrict so the Heart can concentrate on pumping blood to your brain and other major organs. Hypothermia can set-in if your body temperature drops below 95 degrees, it can cause serious damage to the heart muscle. Moreover, walking more rapidly than usual is common when the wind is blowing in your face. Just being out in the cold pushes us to exert ourselves.

Can the flu affect my heart health?

A bout of seasonal flu can trigger a Heart Attack in people already at risk for Heart Disease. It causes fever, which makes your heart beat faster (raising its demand for oxygen). The flu also can cause dehydration, which can reduce your blood pressure (lowering the heart’s supply of oxygen). Again, when demand exceeds supply, it may lead to a Heart Attack. If you have a heart condition, it is recommended that you talk to your GP about getting a flu vaccine.

 Who is most at risk?

Elderly people and very young children find it harder to regulate their temperature. This puts them at higher risk in extreme temperatures. While protecting your own health, always remember to keep an eye on elderly and vulnerable friends, family & neighbours during colder days to make sure they are warm and comfortable. Make sure that you can recognize the symptoms and signs of a Heart attack and immediately report it to a medical expert.

Don’t ignore the warning signs of heart health.

If you feel severe chest pain which is unbearable and radiating to your neck, shoulder and hand, it is the most common symptom of a Heart Attack. Symptoms may vary for men and women. Men occasionally complain of nausea and dizziness, whereas women complain of atypical symptoms like dizziness and unexplained fatigue.

Stay healthy, maintain your heart health, live an active life and follow the below-mentioned tips to safeguard your heart health this winter season:

  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes
  • Manage your stress
  • Maintain your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • If you feel something irregular in your body, meet your physician
  • Avoid overindulging during festivals; eat light and healthy meals

Craft Beer and Breweries in California

With more than 1,000 breweries statewide, it’s safe to say that the craft beer movement in California is officially booming. From the state’s northernmost stands of coast redwoods, south to the sun-scorched Mojave Desert, the craft beer movement has reached every corner of the Golden State. The phenomenon didn’t happen overnight. Anchor Brewing (San Francisco) and Sierra Nevada (Chico) kicked things into gear in the 70s and 80s, and now you’ll find vibrant beer scenes in San Diego, Orange County, Sonoma County, Sacramento, and elsewhere.

San Diego County Craft Breweries
The sunny south becomes a magnet for craft beers
The craft brewery explosion came pretty early to San Diego, and the San Diego Brewers Guild now has more than 130 breweries. The city was named the “Top Beer Town” in America by Men’s Journal, and the New York Times proclaimed that it “is rapidly becoming the country’s best craft beer scene.”

Orange County’s Craft Breweries
California’s latest beer destination: The O.C.
Anaheim is one of the fastest-growing beer destinations in the state, with 15 breweries and counting. Three of the city’s notable offerings are the Anaheim Brewery (closed during Prohibition but re-established in 2010 after a 90-year hiatus) and, on each side of the Santa Ana River, less than two miles away from each other, Noble Ale Works (try their Naughty Sauce Stout and Aim for the Fences IPA) and the Old Orange Brewing Company, both with tasting rooms.

The Inland Empire’s Craft Breweries
Cities and wine country tap into the craft brew scene
Dozens of artisan beer makers have sprung up all over this sunny region of Southern California. Riverside and the Temecula Valley (already a popular wine region) are the two big centres where you’ll find craft breweries and restaurants with local brews on tap.
In the sprawling university city of Riverside, Euryale Brewing Company serves up Cyclopes Coconut Porter and Perseus Pale Ale, among others, while Wicks Brewing Company, one of the largest brewpubs in the Inland Empire, has an impressive 25 taps plus a rotating “guest tap” for local homebrewers.
Other Inland Empire towns are getting into the brewing boom too. Visit the appealing college town of Redlands to sample what’s on tap at Hangar 24 Craft Brewery (one of their “core brews,” Orange Wheat, pays tribute to another local industry) and Ritual Brewing, where you can feast on a Monk’s Lunch Belgian-style ale.

An award-winning staff writer for The New Yorker, Radden Keefe will give us a glimpse into his writing process and the source of his inspirations, in conversation with author and literary editor Finton O’Toole.

In conversation with journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jeffrey Gettleman, Foer will dwell on the changes that each one of us can make to mitigate the imminent and unfolding crisis.

The digital landscape is perhaps the most exciting space for creative potential today, having revolutionised traditional modes of consuming, interpreting and interacting with text-based narratives. The tide has increasingly shifted in support of online content, as streaming platforms constantly evolve, challenging viewer expectations and subverting the ways in which stories are created, absorbed and shared. In a fascinating session, the panelists – author Vikram Chandra, film directors and screenwriters Sudhir MishraVikramaditya Motwane and Vice President, Content, at Netflix India Monika Shergill, in conversation with Vani Tripathi Tikoo, will exchange ideas on the process of adapting dynamic scripts to the screen, reimagining the text for the visual medium and broadening the possibilities of immersive, authentic storytelling.

In another session, celebrated director and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and scriptwriter Abhijat Joshi will take the audience on an extravagant journey through the life, mind, method and madness of perhaps one of the greatest filmmakers Bollywood has seen today. Over the past three decades, Chopra has seen it all – from putting together low-budget student films to establishing the largest production house within the Indian film industry – he has presented the biggest blockbusters of the era while also introducing the audience to a sparkling list of actors who he took under his wing and nurtured to stardom. In conversation with journalist and actor Vani Tripathi Tikoo, they will dive into a session on Chopra’s life and work and a friendship spanning decades.

Sport and a billion dreams: 2021 is a huge sporting year with the postponed Olympics and Paralympics and the men’s World Cup scheduled back-to-back. The women’s World Cup is also less than a year away in February 2022. From the recent evidence of the Australia series, it is clear that through sport, a new India is speaking out: an India that isn’t divided, that isn’t toxic and one that is secular and vibrant. This panel, which includes some of India’s best athletes and para-athletes like Pullela Gopichand and Mansi Joshi, men and women who are all great stories themselves, will celebrate the spirit of a new India and look ahead at the huge year in prospect. They will be in conversation with renowned author and sports journalist Boria Majumdar who has documented their stories in his books on cricket and Olympic sport.

Jaipur BookMark (JBM), the B2B platform that runs parallel to the Festival, will return for its 8th edition.  JBM has become a one-stop-shop for publishers, translators, literary agents, booksellers and writers to meet, discuss ideas, and ‘talk business’. Jaipur BookMark 2021 features sessions on the challenges for publishers and booksellers in the post-pandemic era, skilling for the publishing industry, translations and rights, market trends, distribution models and many other engaging discussions.

The Festival presents not just stimulating conversations on literature and the written and spoken word, but also includes musical performances giving it a vivid cultural backdrop. Similar to the on-ground experience, the audience will be able to enjoy Morning Music every day during the virtual Festival with eminent musicians like – singer-songwriter from Srinagar Ali Safuddin, known throughout the valley for his magnetic and captivating voice that amplifies the plight of his people and the cultural heritage of the Kashmiri community; versatile and popular singer HarpreetHimaliMou who sing ‘Pahaadi’ or mountain folk music from Uttarakhand; internationally acclaimed performer, composer, cultural entrepreneur and music educator Shubhendra Rao; UK-based vocalist and composer Supriya Nagarajan; popular Hindustani classical vocalist Ujwal Nagar.
