Improve your immune response to the COVID19 vaccine shot

Dr Farah Ingale, Director-Internal Medicine, Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi-A Fortis Network Hospital ~

Immune system is an important factor and thus the knowledge is a necessity.

Dr-Farah_Ingale For advise on immune system

After the first vaccine jab a Russian government advisory on refraining from alcohol consumption for 45 days. Which has left many people confused and contemplating whether alcohol can cause any ill impact on the vaccine response. However, there is no mention of alcohol in the material available along with the two vaccines approving in India; this certainly adds to the confusion.

According to experts from the UK, Russia and the US, alcohol is said to suppress immune functioning. And render a person incapable of developing adequate immunogenicity after receiving the vaccine dose. A research study on alcohol consumption and vaccination highlighted that alcohol can cause inflammation in the gut. And can alter the makeup of the microbiome, potentially damaging the microorganisms that maintain immune system health. Heavy alcohol use associates with a few other health problems. Including an increased risk of Heart disease, Cancer, and Liver disease.

Here is what you can do to maintain a healthy lifestyle and improve your chances of a better immune response to the vaccine.

STAY AWAY FROM ALCOHOL & SMOKING: Consumption of alcohol, smoking. Or indulging in other unhealthy practices should be avoided to get the maximum benefit of the vaccine. People who have taken the vaccine shot must ensure a healthy lifestyle. And avoid binge drinking around the time of the vaccination.

GET ENOUGH SLEEP:Another way to ensure your immune system is in perfect shape to make the most of the COVID shot is to get plenty of sleep. A study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine says that those who did not get more than five hours of sleep per night leading up to their flu shot made the vaccine only half as effective as those who had adequate sleep. The same will apply to the COVID shot too.

EXERCISE REGULARLY:Staying active and exercising is another way to make sure your body is healthy. Staying physically fit and maintaining a healthy weight can help reduce your risk of chronic illness, which can make you more susceptible to any complications.

EAT RIGHT, EAT HEALTHY:While no foods give you an immediate immunity boost, eating a healthy diet can help build a healthy immune system. Specific foods, particularly probiotics, can play an important role in keeping you healthy. Be sure to have a lot of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, yogurt, and fermented foods to keep your body nourished.

Thus, the bottom line is that COVID-19 vaccine shot is extremely important to fight this pandemic and improve immunity among people. Stay healthy and be wise. Do not let rumour mongering affect your decision making; call your doctor when in doubt.

Wear your pride to define ‘What freedom means to you?’

As a form of self-expression, fashion can make us feel empowered. The clothing we wear, the jewellery we adorn is sub-consciously suggestive of our personality, identity and mood. Fashion can be oppressive and it can even be liberating, depending on how we choose to use it as a means of communication.
We get in conversation with celebrated designers of the industry, where they express what it means to ‘wear one’s pride’ and ‘what freedom means?’ to each one of them.

“Freedom is an extremely powerful word . It can mean several things and is extremely individualistic . To some it means independence, and to others it means the ability to act and speak freely – or to go where they wish. For us, freedom is to express through our designs. Meaningful freedom within which to be creative . Finding new paths to and from creativity through our designs . Designers can potentially make an important contribution to this quest, given that design is about imagining and achieving better futures and going sustainable.” – Sukriti & Aakriti https://www.instagram.com/sukritiandaakritiofficial/?hl=en

Boost Immunity with Key Nutrients Found in Pistachios

Pistachios provide vitamins and minerals that may benefit the immune system.

American Pistachios Growers (APG), a non-profit trade association representing over 800 grower members in the U.S. recently  organized a Virtual Knowledge Session to talk about the immunity building properties in pistachios and also announce Luke Coutinho as its Lifestyle Ambassador in India.

The session was addressed by Luke Coutinho, globally renowned Holistic Lifestyle Coach – Integrative Medicineand Mike Roussell, PhD, Nutrition Consultant and Advisor to Men’s Health Magazine, United States. The Session was presided over by Mr. Ron Verdonk, Minister Counselor for Agriculture, U.S. Embassy, India, and moderated by Mr. Sumit Saran, India Representative of the APG.

Inaugurating the session, Mr. Ron Verdonk, Minister Counselor for Agriculture, at the U.S. Embassy, New Delhi, said, “I am especially happy that Luke Coutinho, who is an icon and known especially for his commitment to nutrition, fitness and holistic lifestyle, is recommending American pistachios. The Indian food sector is poised for exponential growth and we are constantly exploring opportunities to serve Indian consumers with high-quality, healthy, wholesome and safe products from the U.S. Pistachios are a natural fit in the market.

We strongly believe in the quality and value of U.S. agricultural products which comply in quality with the demands of the Indian marketplace. Both India and the United States recognize the need to encourage healthier lifestyles through exercise and diet in order to combat malnutrition and other public health challenges. We hope to make 2021 a great year for American grown pistachios in India as we find new ways to complement our food and beverage cultures.”

Commenting on his role as a Lifestyle Ambassador of American grown pistachios, Luke Coutinho said, “I am very happy to be associated with American Pistachio Growers. Indians have always used pistachios as a garnish on desserts, biryanis etc. It is time we become more aware about this amazing nut and make American grown pistachios a part of our daily diet. Why? Because pistachios are a complete protein and people will be shocked to know that a handful of these nuts have the same amount of protein as an egg. This is great news for vegetarians and those looking for plant-based protein sources. Pistachios also have one of the lowest calorific value of all commonly consumed nuts and you can have as many as 49 pistachios in a single serving. These make it a perfect for Indians.”

Reiterating the inherent health benefits of pistachios, Dr. Mike Roussell said, “According to the International Food Information Council’s Year-end Survey, one in three people report their eating habits have become healthier over the past year. Also, over 22% respondents report that their choices affect their mental and physical health. Therefore, adding nutritious foods like pistachios to the diet can help give your body more vital vitamins and minerals to help your immune system function at its best. A healthy immune system aids in the healing process and shortens recovery time. I am recommending it to my clients as a convenient snack that’s great to have after a workout or whenever you need a nutritious pick-me-up to hold you over until your next meal. But this year I’m also recommending it for the wealth of vital nutrients they contain, which can help your immune system to operate at its best.”

Moderating the discussion, Mr. Sumit Saran said, “India is a growth market for American grown pistachios. India itself does not produce it. However, as awareness about pistachios and its health benefits increase, we are seeing continuous growth in demand. We are delighted and honored to have Luke Coutinho as Lifestyle Ambassador for America Pistachio Growers in India. He is a great icon for health, nutrition and wellbeing. With his help, we will be able to create awareness about American grown pistachios among discerning consumers. American grown pistachios are available under quality brand names across all major retail points and e-commerce platforms across India.

Natural immunity Vs. vaccination: what is better for us?

By Dr Sandeep Patil, Chief Intensivist, Fortis Hospital Kalyan ~

During the early days of pandemic, it was unclear how individuals would develop protective and lasting immunity against SARS-CoV-2. People lived in a limbo of whether they would gain immunity after infection or vaccination. Therefore, the initial focus was on understanding and defining virus neutralising antibodies from B cells after infection. Early reports indicated that such antibodies decline substantially over less than six months. This raised questions about how long protective immunity might last following an infection.

T-cells known to be important in protecting against infections through processes like cellular immunity, were also considered in research work. Later, defining the roles of T cells in COVID-19 became a central focus for all investigations. Continuous scientific investigations determined that both memory T-cell and B-cell responses specific to SARS-CoV-2 on an average for 3 months. Similar T and B cell responses might be expected following vaccination, and may account for the good efficacy, as suggested by interim results from the three most advanced vaccine candidates, indicating a clear chance of populations to develop vaccine induced immunity.

SO HOW DO WE ACHIEVE VACCINE INDUCED IMMUNITY?

As many experts suggest, vaccination has become a critical addition to our defenses against COVID-19—this much is certain. But our ability to achieve vaccination-induce herd immunity is still unknown. While that shouldn’t stop us, it also shouldn’t stop us from practicing safety guidelines that can curb the disease. If COVID-19 is a raging forest fire, then vaccines are the firefighters trying to quell it. We have to continue with the preventive measures—social distancing, mask wearing, hand hygiene, and rapid testing.

World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 65-70% of a given population must get vaccine to halt the spread of disease. After that, the COVID-19 virus will have few human hosts to choose from, driving down transmission rates dramatically. The process of getting there is simple theory, but laborious and time-consuming in practice. However, we cannot stop trying as I mentioned earlier.

VACCINATION SAFETY: IMMUNE SYSTEM AND HOW IT WORKS?

Some concerns about vaccine safety relate to how vaccines interact with the immune system, or even how the immune system functions in different situations (e.g., natural infection versus immunization). While it is fair to consider these concerns, it is important to understand them in the context of how the immune system works. It is true that natural infection causes better immunity than vaccines. However, the difference between vaccination and natural infection is the price for immunity. Do we need to find for proactive solutions? Immunization with vaccines, like natural infections, induces long-term immunity. And moreover, the vaccine candidates that have received approval from regulatory authorities are efficacious and safe. Speak to your doctor today if you have more doubts.

To illustrate, produced by Urban Beat Project and curated by artist Laiq Qureshi, the collaborations in each episode represent the already existing and ever-evolving synergies in the musical world. Much of what is captured is entirely spontaneous, without any concrete rehearsals. “Some of the best music is made when musicians come together without any real aim in mind, and when they are free of going anywhere particular with their music. Like in a jam. What comes out is pure and organic. This is what we want to showcase.” says Laiq Qureshi, founder of Urban Beat Project.

Thus, SoundsofSociety hopes to feature what music sounds like on the street, on a terrace, in your bedroom, on the beach, or in your backyard. Accordingly, the only real aim is to document the social and cultural milieu in which we live, by presenting the sounds of today.
