RIDHI MEHRA

HEER PRE FALL 2020Ridhi Mehra’s lexicon of eccentric and delicate details with the correct flare for drama has made her a favourite among neo-Indian brides. Echoing her signature styles in Heer, our Pre-Fall 2020 collection, the timeless ensembles in this collection draw reference to the classic Indian weddings but spun with western aesthetics.

Giving preference to the ‘maximal ethnic’ look in these creatives through bright hues like canary yellow, peach, apple green, ivory and gold, there is a shift of the concept of ‘voluminous silhouettes’ to lighter fabrics like chiffon, organza, net and silk.

The designer has defined the new-age bride who experiments yet stands as the glory of Indian fabrics through golden zari threads, cutdana and floral motifs.

“Heer is a tribute to the neo-classical bride-to-be! Someone who is free-spirited, while being deep-rooted in tradition. The collection has been inspired by the grandeur of Mughal carpets juxtaposed with modern Indian silhouettes, eclectic colors and rich heritage.”
– Ridhi Mehra, Creative Director

Tradition and culture in lines of Indian fashion are ever-evolving. The bride adorns an ivory-hued lehenga with Indian bridal ornamentation yet creating the vision of a chic, opulent aesthete, being an icon of the strong Indian bride led by her true girl brigade who stood through thick and thin.

The Media Rumble 2020

Goes digital with TMR@Online

The Media Rumble (TMR), the annual news and media forum, hosted by Newslaundry and Teamwork Arts, will be back this week in a digital avatar titled TMR@Online. At TMR, leading news professionals, tech innovators, policymakers, filmmakers, and investors from across the world discuss the future of news, tech, and policy. Scheduled from 17-20 September 2020, TMR@Online brings South Asia’s largest media forum to audiences at home on their personal screensThe forum can be accessed through The Media Rumble Website via free online registration.

TMR@Online  features conversations and discussions on some of the most pressing issues concerning news media including the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, ‘Hate News and Fake News’, press freedom, gender representation in newsrooms, ethics and morality in the digital world, Caste and community representation in newsrooms, representation of law and order in cinema.

 Highlights

Prof. Rasmus Nielsen, Director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism will make a presentation of the Digital News Report 2020, followed by a conversation on the impact of the pandemic across geographies, how business models and consumer behaviour are changing, and what the future holds for the news media. Also in discussion will be the subject of Ethics and Morality in the Digital World. Algorithms increasingly determine much of the human decision-making process – whether it is the news we consume or the food we order. This session will explore the ethical and moral codes that should govern the fourth industrial revolution, where artificial intelligence and machine learning will become all-pervasive as they merge with bio-tech and the internet of things. There will also be discussions on upskilling journalists for the digital world and the importance of data in journalism.

Karnal Singh, a 1984-batch IPS officer and author of BATLA HOUSE: An Encounter That Shook the Nation is set to be released in September. This session will discuss his book and will explore the administrative reforms needed to delink the police from political interference; the relationship of the police with the media, stressing particularly on how media trials influence investigations; and how Indian police forces are dealing with the speed of information that flows on social media.

There will also be conversations around entertainment media and a comic spin on the news media itself. Indian cinema is going through a churn – the storylines portrayed on screen are increasingly reflecting India’s realities, as opposed to showcasing an utopian fantasy. A session titled Slice of Life Cinema: Reflecting India’s realities will explore the reasons behind the success of such stories; the impact of OTT platforms on audience behaviour, and as a result, on film-writing and production.

Stand-up acts in these times have come of age and have created their own niche. Satire, sarcasm, and comedy have brought a new generation of storytellers in this digital age. Mostly unforgiving, often reflective of the unreal realities, comics present a light-hearted counter to the mainstream. Live stand-up acts by Aditi Mittal and Abijit Ganguly, specially curated for TMR@Online, will take mainstream news to the cleaners in a show called State of the Media. Scheduled for 18th September, tickets for the stand-up show are available on BookMyShow. https://in.bookmyshow.com/national-capital-region-ncr/events/state-of-the-media/ET00137808

The full list of speakers can be found at https://themediarumble.com/speakers. Schedule at https://themediarumble.com/schedule.

SWA Nominees for Best Gender Sensitive Script for SWA Awards 2020

Five Feature Films Selected from 167 Feature Film Submissions

Screenwriters Association (SWA), the Indian guild of screenwriters and lyricists, announced today the five nominees for the Best Gender Sensitive Script category of SWA Awards 2020. The nominees were selected by an eminent jury comprising of screenwriters and filmmakers Apurva Asrani, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Leena Yadav.

Nominees for Best Gender Sensitive Script are:

1.         Saagar Gupta and Sridhar Rangayan for Evening Shadows

2.         Qasim Khallow for Gone Kesh

3.         Ivan Ayr and Kislay for Soni

4.         Faizal Akhtar, Sameer Siddiqi and ShrabaniDeodhar for TheSholay Girl

5.         Faruk Kabir, Kushan Mustafa and Siddharth Mishra for 377 Ab Normal

Congratulating the nominees, Sunil Salgia, General Secretary, SWA, said, “Stories have played an important role in building society, in bringing change in its thinking.  Stories told with visuals have lasting impact. We, the screenwriters, can shape the popular discourse for better or worse. The Best Gender Sensitive Script Award is SWA’s way of encouraging writers to tell insightful stories that nudge the world towards becoming a little more sensitive, a little more inclusive, and a lot more beautiful.”

The five nominees were selected from 167 Hindi language feature films released in 2019 that were submitted to the awards committee. A pre-jury assessed all entries and shortlisted nine films. The final jury then evaluated these films and selected five nominees that challenge social and cultural stereotypes by exploring the identities of and relationships between men, women and other gender identities. The final winner will be announced in an online awards ceremony on September 27, 2020.

Ketki Pandit, screenwriter and Spokesperson, SWA Best Gender Sensitive Script Award, said, “The Best Gender Sensitive Script Award is for the writer who does not shy away from telling stories that are truly ‘hatke’ from the mush of same old clichés. Diving deep, who unveils layer after layer of complex characters, until all notions of ‘us and them’ vanish; and we see, beyond the gender binaries, the spectacular drama of human vulnerability.”

SWA is holding the first ever SWA Awards on the occasion of its Diamond Jubilee year in 2020. Since they are judged by knowledgeable screenwriters and lyricists, these awards promise to become the most coveted validation for writers in India, much like the awards of other prestigious international writers’ guilds and literary organisations.

The nominees spoke to SWA, reacting to the announcement:

Saagar Gupta: Thank you SWA for nominating our film Evening Shadows under this category. We are truly humbled to be nominated from the list of 167 films. Winning the award will surely be a boost, but our work being acknowledged by such a prestigious body of writers is itself a great honour and a matter of pride for us, as for the writers and creators of Evening Shadows.

Sridhar Rangayan: The very fact that SWA recognises the need for instituting a category like Best Gender Sensitive Script to give leverage to marginalised stories about women and LGBTQ characters within the mainstream space means a lot to us writers and filmmakers working on these themes. And the fact that our film Evening Shadows made the cut is a huge honour. We hope to keep the rainbow flag flying high!

Qasim Khallow: Many congratulations to SWA for their first ever awards and thank you for nominating Gone Kesh. It’s a great honour for me to be nominated as I have always looked up to SWA. This SWA Awards will motivate budding writers and also give recognition to already existing writers. I am so glad and happy that finally we have an award show especially dedicated to writers.

Ivan Ayr: I am very grateful to SWA and the awards committee for this nomination. There’s no greater honour than to be recognised by your peers and contemporaries, so this is very special.

Kislay: I initially joined SWA thinking that it is only an association. Later when I received regular updates about its activities, I realised it does much more. It’s an honour to be chosen by your esteemed fellow writers as one of the contenders for the SWA Awards. In academics, the uniqueness and inventiveness of academic work is recognised in its peer reviews. SWA Awards is equivalent to that for me in films.

Faizal Akhtar:Shukriya SWA for nominating me for The Sholay Girl, a movie so dear to my heart. Especially because it is a biopic of a completely unknown woman. Doing contemporary research is kind of difficult. But the team pulled it off. So it feels ebullient to be nominated by SWA, by your own people. This award is important for the appreciation of the art and craft of a medium that is called the ‘writer’s medium’. SWA nominating me feels like being nominated by the Academy for Oscars, and because it is an award by SWA, I know this will be a true lens for writers to judge their work.

Sameer Siddqui: An artist can understand and appreciate the work of a fellow artist better. I’m grateful that my humble effort is nominated for the first ever SWA Awards. I’m sure that SWA Awards are going to be the most respected recognition of creative talents. I wish all the success to this great venture of our association.

Shrabani Deodhar: I feel very honoured to be nominated for my film The Sholay Girl in the Best Gender Sensitive Script category. This nomination is very special as this is the first year for this category and more so because this award is given by screenwriters to screenwriters. I want to thank SWA and the eminent jury members for encouraging and acknowledging us.

Faruk Kabir: I am very happy to learn of the first ever SWA Awards. It’s a welcome step in recognising one of the most important pillars of cinema, the writer. I am delighted and honoured to be nominated by SWA and peers in this very prestigious first for 377 Ab Normal. SWA by far is going to be one of the most revered awards for any content creator and writer to receive.

Kashan Mustafa: The importance of the film, 377 Ab Normal, overshadows any and all creative achievements that it brings. Written and made with true heart and spirit, this film is a milestone in putting the historic judgement and the people who played the key roles towards achieving it in moving images, thus giving them posterity. Faruk Kabir and Siddharth Mishra were instrumental in getting this film made. And so was Zee5 without whom this would not exist and would not be viewed by so many across boundaries of nations, ideologies and gender.

Siddharth Mishra: I’m really very happy and excited as our film, 377 Ab Normal, has been nominated under the Best Gender Sensitive Script category of SWA Awards. It’s an important film for these times as though the court has done its job by decriminalising Article 377, the message should reach out to the larger part of the population in a way which is understandable and which can sensitise them. Film, as a medium, becomes a very effective tool in doing this. And we, as a team, tried to convey this message in an empathetic manner through this film.

D I S C O 2020

L F W   Collaborates with péro for Fall-Winter 2020

:Lakmé Fashion Week, announces its latest collaboration with péro for the launch of its Fall-Winter 2020 collection titled D I S C O 2020.

The collection Launched as a Fashion Dance Film on péro and L F W Digital Media

Inspiration

From DISCO a genre of dance and sub-culture that emerged in the 1970s from the urban nightlife scene. péro D I S C O2020 is being launched, at a time when we all need something to cheer up, something to make us forget all that is happening around us and break free, exactly what DISCO did in the 1970s by providing an escape from all the social and economic issues. D I S C O 2020 is a party, where the only thing that binds people together is music and dance, and a reason to be happy. A party where everyone can for once forget all that is happening around them and just lose themselves to dance.

 Highlights

Inspired from 70’s DISCO fashion while giving it a unique twist. All woollen fabrics in the collection are woven in pure Australian merino, in close association with the weavers of Himachal Pradesh. Apart from hand-woven wool, textiles have also been developed in various other regions of India, like the cotton stripes and checks from West Bengal, mashru stripes from Gujarat and hand-woven silks from Bhagalpur along with mulberry silks from the south of India and light chanderis from Madhya Pradesh.

To complement the geometric patterns of the woven checks and stripes, and to bring in an element of shine and glitter of the DISCO lights, the chequered and floral textiles have been rendered with matt and shiny sequin following the textile patterns. With the help of skilled hand embroiderers, the collection also showcases ornamental needlework that has been rendered with hand-embroidered wool flowers using extensive embroidery techniques and play of sequin to add some shimmer.

 QUOTE

Aneeth Arora péro founder &designer

“This season we took inspiration from the 70’s DISCO fashion, we looked at the silhouettes, colours and patterns of the era, be it the retro stripes, the bold checks and also the bright colours like purple, mint and red.DISCO 2020 evokes some sense of culture from which it originates, this culture communicates internationally in such a way that the wearer looks equally at ease in the streets of Paris or London, as she does here in India. The look is not about an age group or season; it is about a mindset, a willingness to incorporate the effortless DISCO style in one’s attire.”

Nikhita Punja Bhimjyani, Head Fashion Events, IMG Reliance

We are happy to collaborate with péro for the launch of their fall-winter collection titled D I S C O. This showcase is a glimpse of what is in store at the upcoming digital edition of Lakmé Fashion Week where we once again push the boundaries of Indian Fashion and look forward to future collaborations with péro.”

This collection also sees some unique collaborations. The first one being with artist and illustrator Nathalie Lété, who especially developed illustrations of animal characters (like a hippo, mouse, rabbit, monkey, and a pig). Nathalie worked with mixing different techniques and mediums to create illustrations, ceramics, textiles, and paintings. The hand-drawn artwork was meticulously embroidered with mixed media like beads, thread, and sequins, and incorporated into the limited-edition range for D I S C O 2020.

péro also collaborated with ‘Grounds’, a Japanese shoe label that has an interesting approach to shoemaking. Instead of forgetting gravity, the label makes the sole a shape suitable for walking and makes the body feel like floating with a highly transparent sole evoking a pleasant change in the relationship of the body with the earth. Combining their cool concept of making the wearer float, with péro’sstrength of handcrafting and upcycling, the collection showcases hand-embroidered shoes with sequin and glitter, fitted lights in transparent soles making them glow in the dark – resulting inthe pair of perfect dancing shoes for D I S C O 2020.

Don’t Choose Favorites…Every Tooth Deserves to be Flossed

All you need to know about flossing

By Dr Gunita Singh

Flossing is an important oral hygiene habit. It cleans teeth interdentally, so the idea is the food particles that are stuck in between teeth and cannot be removed with brushing can be easily removed by the floss. Though flossing is not a common practice in our country and has its own side effects, also if not done properly it can lead to damage to gums and teeth.

woman smile with tooth floss; Shutterstock ID 646610392; Purchase Order: GSK02122019

How does one floss?

1. Take about 20 inches of dental floss.

2. Wind both ends to the middle finger of both hands leaving only 1-2 inches for your teeth.

3. Place it in between 2 teeth and gently glide up and down don’t touch the gums.

4. When you reach gums curve the floss to enter space between gums and teeth gently again without harming your gums.

5. Repeat with every tooth and with each tooth use a new section of the floss out of the 20 inches thread.

“Now the issue is that this is very technical. But the flossing is a very technical procedure wherein sometimes when not done properly leads to gaps between teeth and most of the time it is not done properly so I have examined over the period of 20 years that people who do regular flossing they tend to have more gaps in between their teeth as compared to the ones not doing. Well, but always there was a question mark I would not recommend against flossing but encourage to use the technique properly. Flossing is much better than using toothpicks . Toothpicks mean total damage to your teeth so flossing once in a while to remove extra particles in between the teeth is an excellent idea. Interdental brushes too are good to use. Though I will totally suggest water flossing it is a new age solution to maintain oral hygiene it is a non-touch method to keep your oral hygiene clean of debris and other food particles stuck in between the teeth. It is a blessing for people who have implants, crowns, and bridges, and artificial teeth. It is easily available online with multiple tips of various shapes and sizes to suit your teeth and oral cavity. It is battery operated and flushes water and is available on various e-commerce platforms.” Dr. Gunita Singh, Director, Dentem.
