RAHUL MISHRA

Lotus Pond

Rahul Mishra’s collection titled LOTUS POND talks about fashion’s connect with the environment. The clothes symbolize hope and optimism for a better future.

Mood Board

“Earth may be alive: not as the ancients saw her-a sentient Goddess with a purpose and foresight-but alive like a tree. A tree that quietly exists, never moving except to sway in the wind, yet endlessly conversing with the sunlight and the soil. Using sunlight and water and nutrient minerals to grow and change. But all done so imperceptibly, that to me the old oak tree on the green is the same as it was when I was a child.”

 —James Lovelock

These words by James Lovelock become richer with meaning as we find ourselves in the middle of the pandemic. The conversation between the tree and its surroundings found greater intimacy in the past months, as human intervention reduced. The virginal lotus ponds with life sprouting in diverse forms, the psychedelia of the underwater-scape, replete with striking hues and textures, and the symphony of birds and butterflies inspire the craft behind “Lotus Pond”.

Highlights

Collection of lehengas and sherwanis adorned with motifs of lotuses and dragonflies, there’s jaali work and architectural motifs as well.

Lotus Pond” is an ode to the evolving ecosystem of aquatic plants, fishes, planktons, dragonflies and butterflies – all brought together by the sublime lotus,

 Fabric Story

Colour Canvas

Designer’s Take

“This collection is one of the most significant collections for us, an organic extension of our Paris Haute Couture collection, ‘Butterfly People’. A significant part of our New Delhi team are our “kaarigars” (hand embroiderers and tailors). We have been fortunate to be able to stand by them through this storm and are committed to continue doing so. It’s the very foundation of our brand values. We are a large family – that includes hundreds of people including local craftsmen and workers. Today, we collectively acknowledge the value of beauty. It gave us a deep sense of joy and nourishment to return to our studio. Through this collection as a creative expression we are served a reminder of the quote by Hans Christian Anderson, that indeed “Just living is not enough. One must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower.”

36th-Anniversary Global Awards for the Priyadarshni Academy

Lighthouses of Hope, Vision & Resilience Award for Taapsee Pannu and several others

Bollywood actor Taapsee Pannu and several international luminaries were commended as lighthouses of hope, vision and resilience during the gloomy world atmosphere of pandemic-hit 2020.These honours occurred at the 36th-Anniversary Global Awards for the Priyadarshni Academy on Saturday, September 19 through a YouTube live event broadcast from Mumbai. The Priyadarshni Academy is a socio-cultural organisation, which hosts these awards to honour luminaries in multiple disciplines every year. This time, they decided to continue in the same vein to serve as a symbol of resilience in the glum atmosphere.

“This is exactly the time to celebrate the iconic, extraordinary individuals who’ve demonstrated vision, action and resilience and like lighthouses in turbulent times, have shown us the way. We need their inspiration more now than ever before. That’s why we’re here, this evening”, said Dr RA Mashelkar, Chairman of the Global Awards Advisory Committee for the Priyadarshni Academy.

Awarded the Smita Patil Memorial Award, Taapsee Pannu was recognised for her commendable acting skills in a body of films like Saand Ki Aankh, Thappad, Mulk, Pink, Manmarziyan, Naam Shabana and Badla.

“Thank you so much for considering me worthy of this honour. I’ve realised the depth of this compliment and the responsibility of being given her name fairly late in life (as I come from a non-film, purely educational background). It’s almost surreal… I don’t think I’m anywhere near her as of now, but I would off-course, like to keep her as my benchmark and make sure that I reach somewhere close”, she said, as she accepted the award virtually from former union minister and India’s Sherpa to G20, Suresh Prabhu,

Apart from Pannu, the Academy also honoured Børge Brende, President of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Jose Angel Gurría, Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Sanjiv Mehta, Chairman and Managing Director of HUL, Graça Machel DBE HonFBA, who served as the First Lady for both Mozambique and South Africa and Kamlesh Patel (Daaji), President of the Shri Ram Chandra Mission.

Established in 1984, the Priyadarshni Academy aims to serve the society by nurturing access to education for deserving students and providing opportunities for classical musicians and dancers. Its global awards are also called the Nobel Awards for Asia. This year, the Academy was represented on the dais by Dr Niranjan Hiranandani, Chairman of the Priyadarshni Academy, Dr R A Mashelkar, Chairman of the Global Awards Advisory Committee and Nanik Rupani and Ashish Vaid.

An Appeal to re-open Gyms

IndiaActive, an association formed by the fitness industry in India has appealed to the state governments especially Maharashtra, Bihar and Jharkhand to re-open gyms. Gym owners from across the nation including the big brands like Gold’s gym, Multifit, Anytime Fitness, UFC Gym, Snap fitness and Nittro have come together to address their unheard issues by the state governments who have yet not given the permission to re-open gyms.

Major Setback during 6 months of Lockdown

The entire industry faced a 100% setback especially in the above mentioned states. Despite of the gym owners agreeing to follow all the standard protocols they are of the view that they need equal support from the government to ensure smooth functioning of the gyms. Gyms in India expect at least a year’s lag time before the business gains traction and thus they want the governments of Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Bihar to let them re-open gyms at the earliest to avoid further loss.

Safety Measures in Delhi Gyms

While in Delhi where the operations have just begun the gym owners are strictly following safety norms in view of covid-19, they have taken several measures like repositioning of machines, to maintain social distancing, limiting workout time, sanitisation after every session and capping the number of people in each session as directed by the MHA. On an average 35-40% members have started coming back to the gym which is encouraging though the revenues are not much but we are confident that in next 2 months it will further improve.

Quotes

Nikhil Kakkar, COO, Gold’s Gym and Treasurer, IndiaActive

“The lockdown has affected several industries along with the fitness industry. We would request the government to give a GST tax holiday on membership, as to fight against Covid-19 one needs to have stronger immunity and that can happen by ‘Staying Active, Staying Fit’. This is possible under the supervision of fitness expert at the gyms. Moreover every gym considering big and small employees on an average 20 people and 20 families livelihood is attached to it hence there are lacs of families who are suffering with the closure. Hence they should motivate people to go back to gym and allow us to re-open gyms at the earliest.

Vikas Jain, Managing Director, Anytime Fitness and General Secretary, IndiaActive

“Due to restrictions in the major states like Maharashtra, Bihar etc. that are houses to a number of branches of the leading gym facilities in India, many people are facing unemployment due to lockdown. Even though there is a lockdown, all the gym owners have to pay property rent, tax, salaries, electricity bills etc. Many Gyms across the country have shut shop and for the remaining one’s, most of them have drained their capital and now the situation of paying minimum salary to the trainers, players have become a distant dream.”

It is time to recognise the persons who lay the foundations of these kingdoms. Let them be centre-stage. They will cherish this award more than anything as it comes from their colleagues, their competitors, their critics and those who envy them yet love them. Writing a movie’s script is the most challenging craft, and the best deserves honours, irrespective of its commercial outcome.”

Anjum Rajabali, senior screenwriter, teacher and Spokesperson, SWA Film Awards, said, “Victor Hugo’s oft-quoted line says it perfectly: ‘There’s nothing as powerful as an idea whose time has come.’ The time to celebrate the primacy of the script has arrived. The time to honour the writer is here. And what better way than for a writers’ association to do it. There’s no greater pride for a writer than to have her work endorsed by peers who understand writing.”

All the nominees thanked the Screenwriters Association.
