Focus on Sustainable Design
By Manoshi Kamdar
Sustainability has hit fashion with a bang. What seemed unimaginable 5 years ago has become a reality in today’s fashion business. For brands who are starting out or thinking of making the switch to sustainable fashion here are few things that you should keep in mind as you go through the design process.
Design Thinking: For those of us who went to design school a few years ago we weren’t taught to think of sustainable design from the get go. For sustainable fashion brands it is absolutely essential to keep sustainability as a primary thought while designing and not an afterthought. If designers start thinking sustainably from conception a lot of processes that are harmful in the supply chain can be pre-empted and eliminated. It might be tough in the beginning to rewire the thinking completely however with time it improves fabrics & quality, reduces wastage and betters inventory planning. While designing please think about seasonality and perennial trends and do not be obliged to follow the rat race.
Fabrics: For sustainable fabrics correct research is the key. There are a lot of challenges and grey areas while sourcing fabrics and minimum order quantities don’t help small or emerging brands. However, insist on certification (research what applies where) or testing while buying fabrics. Study fabric compositions especially when vendors claim something is “organic” or “recycled”. Question dyeing, weaving and printing practises. Along with fabrics think of sustainable materials for trims and notions. These are not very easy to find especially in India but there are ways to work around this through smart design.
Inventory Management: For sustainable fashion brands planning inventory is quite essential to avoid over production and wastage. Create a model and work with factories where you can manufacture limited pieces even if it might be a little more expensive. Think of ways in which you can assess customer demand prior to production e.g.preorders or Instagram reviews. In the longer run a slightly higher garment cost is much better than unsold inventory and also less harmful for the environment. If you are left with unsold stock, repurpose or upcycle it into new collections.
Right Manufacturing: This is the most important step in sustainability but hardest to control. If you are working with contract factories or outside vendors definitely conduct sanity checks. There are many different types of factories who operate in the sustainability/ethical realm so understand who does what. Brands get better output when they invest time in educating the factories about wastage, new ways of pattern cutting and other sustainable processes. Most of these processes are pretty new and everyone is still trying to adapt so information exchange will greatly help.

Skin Fresheners for a Skin Care Routine
By Shahnaz Husain
Skin fresheners restore the normal balances, keep the pores unclogged, stimulate blood circulation to the skin surface and keep the skin glowing. Rose Water, cucumber, khus and many other ingredients make good skin fresheners. You can also use green tea, apple cider vinegar, potato, tomato, lemon and even white wine to refresh and tone the skin.

The skin tonic or freshener which you buy or make should have a gentle action, so that you can use it several times a day to wipe and refresh the skin, especially during summer. Herbal products are good in this respect. Keeping them in the fridge really helps to tone and refresh. Rose Water is one of the best known skin toners. To make a skin toner and freshener, Rose water can be mixed with Witch Hazel. It helps to tighten and soothe the skin and also reduces inflammation. You can make your own skin freshener with rosewater and witch-hazel. This combination not only tones the skin, but has an antiseptic effect. It is also said to tighten the skin and reduce puffiness. Witch hazel may be available online. For normal skin, mix together ¾ cup rosewater with ¼ cup witch-hazel. For oily skin, mix the rosewater and witch-hazel in equal quantities. For dry skin, mix together ¾ cup rosewater, ¼ cup witch-hazel and half-teaspoon pure glycerin. Or, you can use a rose-based skin tonic.
Rose water can also be mixed with cucumber juice and applied on the skin. Rose water can also be combined with lemon juice. It reduces oiliness and also tones the skin. Rose is a natural coolant. Cucumber slices can be rubbed on the skin to cool and refresh. One teaspoon apple cider vinegar can be added to one and a half cup water. Soak cotton wool pads and tone the skin with them. Tomato juice applied on the skin, reduces oiliness. After cleansing, soak cotton wool pads in white wine and tone the skin with it, wiping the skin and then patting it briskly.
Mint leaves also cool and freshen the skin. Crush mint leaves and add them to water. Let it stand for an hour. Strain and apply on the face with cotton wool. It is cool and refreshing.
For oily skin, mix lemon juice with egg white and a few drops of honey. Apply on the face and wash it off after 15 minutes. It cleanses and refreshes the skin, reducing oiliness and closing the pores.
Essential Oils: You can add a few drops of essential oil to water to make a skin freshener. Essential oils should never be used by themselves. They should be diluted with water or pressed oil. Add 2 drops of the essential oil to 10 ml of water. If you like you can put it in an atomizer, so that you get a fine spray of the lotion on the skin, but be careful to protect the eyes. You can also use it to wipe the skin. Two essential oils can be mixed. For example, you can add five drops of essential oil of rose to 50 ml of mineral water. Store it in a cool place. For oily skin, use essential oil of lavender or rose. For normal and dry skin, use essential oil of rose, lavender or geranium.
To refresh the skin, tone daily with chilled rose water, or skin tonic. Toning stimulates blood circulation to the skin surface and adds a glow. Keep rose water in a bowl in the fridge and soak cotton wool pads in it. Use them to wipe the skin. Then, stroke the skin with them. On the cheeks, use outward and upward movements, ending each stroke at the temples and applying gentle pressure. On the forehead, start from the centre and go outwards on each side, again ending at the temples. For the chin, use circular movements. Then, pat the skin briskly with the rosewater-soaked cotton wool pads.

Rahul Roy making film on the Plight of Migrant Workers
There’s hardly a soul untouched by the plight of our migrant workers, who are forced to walk hundreds of kilometres — in the scorching heat, often without food and water — to their hometowns. Many Bollywood celebs, too, have come forward to help them. And now, ‘Aashiqui’ actor Rahul Roy, who had won the inaugural season of ‘Bigg Boss’, has decided to put himself in their shoes, literally.

He is planning to make a film on migrant labourers and the hardships they are facing. Titled ‘The Walk’, it will be shot once the lockdown is lifted and the shoots resume. Rahul tells us, “I have roped in Nitin Gupta, who directed me in ‘Death of an Ambassador’, to helm this project. ‘The Walk’ is a story of human trial and the heart-wrenching situation that migrant workers are facing. It revolves around two men – Roshan and Azaan – and their journey from Mumbai to Uttar Pradesh. I play Roshan in the film.”

He adds, “The corona virus pandemic has put us in an unprecedented situation for which nobody was prepared. While many of us are in the comfort of our homes, it’s the migrant workers who are suffering the most. Their survival depends on their daily earnings. Now, the pandemic has taken that away from them. ‘The Walk’ shows how hardship and pain are masked by the simplicity of life and how Roshan and Azaan get home. Though the film focuses on their journey, through their eyes, you get a glimpse of the life of all migrant workers, who are trying to return to the sanctuary of their home.”

Rahul hopes that the film will serve as an eye-opener and help us tackle such a calamity, should we face it again. “Our endeavour is to tell a beautiful story and remember this time – something that we never thought we would see in this lifetime. We hope that through our compelling storytelling, we touch many hearts and are better prepared for any such situation the next time,” he signs off.
