MoHFW guidelines to states – Sanitary napkins’ provision are part of essential services & relief supplies: Official

Ministry supporting states in distributing napkins at a time for at least 2-3 months; activity restricted to areas outside containment zones

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has issued guidelines to all states that sanitary napkins’ provision are part of the essential services and relief supplies and this has to be covered by Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) during the outreach services, a top official said during an ASSOCHAM webinar on ‘Menstrual Health & Hygiene Management during COVID-19’.

“In fact we have gone a step further and we have said that whenever the ASHA and ANM are going for the outreach activities within the communities, they can actually distribute napkins not for one month but we are trying to support states in giving at least at one time for at least two-three months, so that girls do not worry about the next month,” said Dr Zoya Ali Rizvi, deputy commissioner, Adolescent & Child Health Division, MoHFW during the webinar organised by ASSOCHAM on the occasion of World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

Dr Zoya however cleared that such interventions as of now are limited only outside the containment zone as activities inside such zones are bit restricted because of the risk to the healthcare personnel. “The whole idea is that when a woman comes to the health centre she is not refused for any services be it for sanitary napkins, vaccination, antenatal care or any kind of testing also. That mandate has been shared with states and they are fully on line,” she said.

She also said that support of NGO partners, civil society organisations, CSR funds of private organisations are critical for menstrual hygiene management (MHM) and also help strengthen, supplement government programs in this field.Dr Zoya informed, “We are also promoting e-commerce platforms, most of our procurement at state level is also taking part through e-commerce platforms so that more and more smaller and medium level enterprises are enrolling in to that so no couple of companies have the monopoly and ensure that more and more people invest their money, time and energy in to MHM.”

She further said that various Ministries are working towards ensuring good and adequate MHM in their own spheres of activities. “MoHFW along with Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS), Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) and Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) is working in tandem in their own fields.”

Talking about the budgetary allocation, she said, “In MoHFW, the budgetary allocation for procurement of sanitary napkins has gone up gradually, last year we gave about Rs 65 crore, this year we are giving more than Rs 64 crore, so states are out there who are procuring in a decentralised fashion sanitary napkins for their own beneficiaries and as the uptake of sanitary napkins’ distribution through the ASHA mechanism, support by the ANM and the medical officers increases, this budgetary allocation and capacity building will increase gradually.”

In her address, Chetna Soni, Category Leader – Feminine Care, P&G Indian sub-continent said “It was great coming together at the ASSOCHAM Menstrual Hygiene Day webinar with stakeholders who are as passionate about ensuring 100 per cent menstrual hygiene in India as us. It was a privilege to share with the fraternity our latest movement launched earlier this year, Whisper’s #KeepGirlsInSchool, as well as our new initiative ‘Mobileshaala’-  a free phone based learning platform for girls in need, which includes key subjects including a curated period education module.”

In her address during the ASSOCHAM webinar, Pratibha Singh, WASH in institutions specialist, UNICEF impressed upon the need for training frontline workers and staffs on handling MHM during emergencies.

Aladdin’s Musical Score on Star Movies

The 1992 animated feature of Aladdin is something which is stuck to every millennial’s childhood. It was one of the best-selling soundtrack albums last year and had won Academy awards, Golden Globe Awards and Grammy award.

With songs like “A Whole New World”, “Prince Ali” and “Jump Ahead” being very close to the heart of the fans, Disney decided to bring back to original composer Alan Menken for the live-action remake of the film.

  • The live adaption of the animated classic will be aired on Star Movies on 31st May 2020 at 12 pm 9 pm.

Alan Menken, an Academy and Grammy award winning composer, songwriter and musician, wrote and composed over 37 tracks for the film!  His award winning track ‘A Whole New World’ received two new versions. The in-movie version was sung by the lead actor & actress of the film, Mena Massoud along with Naomi Scott and the end credits version of the track was sung by famous British singer Zayn Malik and American singer Zhavia Ward.

Apart from making revamped version of his classic songs, Alan also brought in fresh new songs. The song ‘Speechless’ which is a major highlight in the soundtrack for the film, plays a very important role in the storyline as it showcases a major character development in Jasmine.

QUOTE

Actress Naomi Scott on her experience working with Alan and talked the song…

Well, of course the amazing Alan Menken who is the genius behind these classic songs. Disney enlisted him and Pasek& Paul who are amazing lyricist and songwriters. So, that kind of force of a team to create this new speechless which is so powerful and obviously I have a connection to that song just because the character of Jasmine, she goes through this arc of finding her voice. Yes, she is strong and she stands up for herself but it takes time. She is just not there at the beginning of the movie. I think that song is just the climax of- when she is like ‘Enough is enough! I have a choice here and I am going to speak out and it may hurt me, I may get backlash from that but I am going to do it anyway!’ I think that is a very relatable thing. It also a good message to put out there, it is so important that the people who can speak up, do. That is ultimately what that song is about!”

Dr. Blossom Kochhar

In this pandemic we all are worried and stressed out and there is anxiety. To beat all that we need to lift our vibrations and for that there is nothing better than essential oils which are derived from nature and work on our mind, body, soul and emotions. This also cleanses us inside out and is a wonderful space cleaning tool.

The lockdown has ensured that the pollution has cleared out, we have animals and birds moving around, the oceans and rivers are clean and the Himalayas are visible. We should also work towards preserving this clean environment and take measures to save our environment”.

Dr Priya Kaul

“As the topic being discussed is very relevant for the current times when the entire world has been locked up into a deadly pandemic.I am positive that in the midst of the negativities and chaos floating all around us, space cleansing can prove to be very effective in bringing harmony and balance in our environment as also in our energies.”

What is “The SPACE CLEANSING”?

It  does not mean only lurking for hours on doorknobs, handrails, keyboards, elevator buttons and other hard surfaces, just waiting to be passed on to someone else. It is more than that which also includes how you clean your environment.

In order to improve oneself and get positive energy to get back into the game, the speakers will recommend everyone to go for SPACE CLEANSING. In order to increase the work productivity, and a very cordial relationship amongst your workmates,  SPACE CLEANSING should be done once in every Six months. Apart from cleaning your workspace on a regular interval the other core activities include Prayer, Shlokas which include Shanti Mantra, Sacred Morning Chants, and evening chants which have been followed since the Vedic age.

This World Menstrual Hygiene Day, let’s put #SheFirst

‘Period Leave’ policy for  the women workforce

Paree, a young Indian homegrown sanitary napkin brand has been championing the cause of menstrual hygiene by positioning sanitary pads as essential and to make them accessible to as many women as possible especially those who need it the most. Through its #SheFirst #PadsAreEssential campaign, Paree started a dialogue around how women are the backbone of our society yet their needs tend to take a backseat. It encouraged women to put their needs and hygiene First. The Company strongly believes that it is time that every woman starts prioritizing her needs and begins to focus on her menstrual health and hygiene, without guilt, without shame

Taking this conversation further and in keeping with the brand’s commitment towards #SheFirst, on the occasion of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, Paree, in a first-ever Human Resource landmark, announces Period Leave for all its female employees.

Paree’s #SheFirst #PadsAreEssential campaign was about her home while this leg extends to the workplace. Office is where she spends most of her time. With this announcement, Paree addresses the issue of emotional and physical discomfort that often accompanies menstruation. The brand has always been vocal about real issues that women face during their periods, be it Heavy Flow and now Cramps and PMS with this.

Almost 40% of Paree employees are women with women making 80% of the corporate staff and will benefit from this policy, as this one day of Period Leave per month will allow women to take it a little easy if they are having a rough period, and only if they choose to do so. This is not a mandatory leave and the choice to avail it or not is completely upto the employee. Moreover, this policy is not just limited to corporate office staff but is also extended to female staff working in all other verticals & units. The managerial and corporate staff can avail work from home whereas it is a paid leave for factory and on ground sales staff.

To make the announcement of period leave come alive, Paree created a video titled “Keep It Real #PareePeriodLeave” capturing different reactions of their employees.

This move is also a progressive step towards keeping it real when it comes to period related issues like the physical or emotional discomfort that a woman might experience during her periods and how the corporate sector can band together to make-workplaces more conducive for their women employees. Interventions like period leaves, sanitary pad dispensers and menstrual hygiene medical kits at the workplace are steps in the right direction. Menstrual discomfort and hygiene are real issues and it is time that we start acknowledging it.
