The Whistling Whales

Where Art, Advocacy, and Elegance Converge at Phoenix Palladium

Phoenix Palladium, renowned for its elegance and sophistication, is much more than a shopping destination—it’s a cultural oasis where art and luxury converge. Home to over 300 luxury and premium brands, the mall offers an extraordinary blend of shopping, dining, and entertainment. Each season, visitors eagerly anticipate the unveiling of new artistic installations that add a touch of magic to the mall’s captivating ambiance.

This monsoon season, Phoenix Palladium introduces “The Whistling Whales,” a stunning artistic collaboration with PETA India that aims to raise awareness about marine conservation. The installation features life-sized whale sculptures, intricately crafted to highlight the beauty, playfulness, and fragility of these ocean giants. Through this artful display, the installation seeks to inspire visitors to take action in protecting marine life and preserving our oceans.

Whales are essential to our planet’s health, playing a critical role in capturing carbon from the atmosphere. A single great whale can sequester up to 30 tonnes of CO2—far more than trees. Their role in carbon storage and the fertilization of phytoplankton, which contributes to atmospheric oxygen, makes their conservation vital. However, whale populations have drastically declined from an estimated 4-5 million to just about 1.3 million today, underscoring the urgency of their protection.

The launch event at Phoenix Palladium was a perfect blend of education and entertainment. PETA India led an interactive session on marine conservation and bycatch—the unintended capture of whales and other marine animals during commercial fishing. Attendees, including families and children, learned about the dangers facing whales due to the fishing industry and the critical importance of preserving ocean ecosystems. Through engaging storytelling, the session aimed to instill a sense of responsibility in the younger generation, encouraging them to champion environmental conservation for a sustainable future.

“Bycatch is one of the most significant threats to marine wildlife, with countless whales and sea creatures accidentally caught in fishing nets each year. Through this installation and our partnership with Phoenix Palladium, we hope to raise awareness and inspire action to protect these invaluable creatures. Together, we can make a difference and ensure our oceans remain vibrant, healthy, and full of life,” said Meenakshi Narang, Senior Education Coordinator at PETA India.

As a gesture of appreciation, children received keepsakes to remind them of their role in safeguarding the planet, and they enjoyed a special screening of a marine life-themed movie. “The Whistling Whales” installation continues to captivate visitors, spreading its powerful message: together, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future. Phoenix Palladium and PETA India invite everyone to be part of this movement, where art and advocacy come together to protect our planet and its precious marine life.
