‘In 2020, we’re nowhere near equality of women in judiciary, society’

With fewer equal pay opportunities, less representation of women at the top and implementation hurdles, women’s equality is still far, far away in 2020, concluded an international panel on the subject on  October 6.

Eminent women lawyers and legal luminaries from India and the United States came together to discuss ‘Women’s Rights: Sharing of Judicial Experience & Learning Between India & the USA’ at an online webinar organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday. Domestic violence during the pandemic, unequal pay and fewer opportunities at the workplace were some of the concerns raised at the table, while involving men into the rights conversation was one of the suggested solutions in this wide-angled discussion.

The panel included advocates Karuna Nundy (Advocate, Supreme Court of India), Lakshmi Challa (Founder & Managing Attorney of Challa Law Group, USA), Mrunalini Deshmukh (Advocate, India), Nilima Singh (Advocate, India) and Navneet Bhalla (Executive Director, Manavi, USA).

“Lady Justice’s blindfold, sword, and scale are reminders that justice should be administered in an impartial, firm, and balanced manner. What strikes me is that the mascot is a woman. But is the blindfold a reminder to the women to turn the blind eye to the injustice happening around them?”, asked Naushad Panjwani, Regional President of IACC- West India Council.

The panel observed that though there were laws to ensure women’s equality and landmark cases which set a precedent at multiple occasions, these were not enough without the proper implementation and dealing with the systemic and mental mindset when it came to such issues. “We need to acknowledge that we have the law, the opportunity but need to now work on the mindset, the cultural and systemic challenges too, which diminish opportunities and scope to excel”, said Lakshmi Challa, an expert in immigration laws in the USA.

“The starting point is to frame women’s rights as human rights, our fundamental human rights. There have been numerous domestic laws and moves for equality moves. We need to recognise the lag between the laws and statutes on paper and how they exist in reality”, said Navneet Bhalla, a seasoned UK advocate, who is now the Executive Director for Manavi, a New Jersey-based women’s rights organisation. Manavi addresses cases of domestic and gender violence against South Asian women in the USA.

It’s also about getting everyone, especially men, involved in the conversation. According to advocate Mrunalini Deshmukh, that’s how the movement for women’s equality had begun, “All social reformers initially have been men who have valued women as an integral part of their society in the age and era where they came from. Today, it’s a combined effort for all women, activists, judges to bring us to a stage where we can openly discuss the journey of women’s equality”, she said.

“I think it’s essential to ensure that the men are equally engaged in the conversation for women’s right movement, shoulder to shoulder to advance the cause”, Navneet added.

The group also focused on how the current COVID-19 situation had impacted the women’s agenda. Balancing the present work/life dependencies, job losses and the pressures to excel in all fields have only increased so far. The quarantines have also locked in women facing violence at home, with their abusers.

“In Mumbai, we saw domestic violence hit its peak during the pandemic as there was no one to talk to, and the police did not have time to deal with these issues. Remember, the origin of domestic violence comes from the power equation, where the man feels that he is the superior of the lot. To change misogynistic mindsets, we need to make men empowered to recognise and hold these actions as wrong. We need to train our boys, our men that violence at home, the workplace and anywhere against women is wrong and needs to be condemned accordingly”, highlighted Mrunalini.

Navneet concurred. “The onus or responsibility for an assault, violence or a crime against women is still put on the woman. In terms of a systemic change, I put the onus on the men – hold such actions, jokes and comments as unacceptable”, she said.

“Without safety, without value, without respect, there would be no value for women’s equality, especially at the workplace”, pointed out Shubika Bilkha, Founding Partner at EdPowerU, who moderated the discussion.

Challa observed how the workplace was also shaped by these systemic and mindset issues, especially the judicial systems in both nations. “I often say, ‘they see us, but they don’t hear us.’ Society’s self-imposed hearing impediment is rooted in the systemic devaluation of woman. A difference in a chromosome should not automatically depreciate otherwise identical calibre of work. It is only when women and men in a concerted, united effort, raise their voices against gender disparity and design infrastructures eroding the historical gender bias that’s within our organisation systems. Yes, men and women are different, but different does not mean substandard. After all, both men and women have the X chromosome; it is just that women have something EXTRA, our X factor which needs to be valued in parity.”

“Women constitute half of the population of the world; they deserve to enjoy all rights without any discrimination, deprivation or bias. This should be the motto of the survival of social life”, concluded Saurabh Shah, Regional Vice President of IACC- West India Council at the end of the discussion.

What you Need to Know about Serums

By Shahnaz Husain

You may be wondering, “What exactly is a serum? Is it like a moisturising lotion?” Actually, a serum is in the form of a liquid and is different from a moisturising lotion. A moisturiser replenishes moisture and relieves dryness. It may also prevent the loss of moisture.

A serum is designed for many other functions, like age control, removal of dark patches or spots, brightening the skin, protecting the skin, etc. Hair serums are also available, which condition the hair and add shine. They also form a protective layer over the hair and protect it pollutants and impurities. A serum is in a form that penetrates the deeper layers of the skin. Thus Serums are also lighter in texture and do not make the skin oily. They may be used by all skin types. One of the advantages of a serum, as a skin care product, is that it is light, easily absorbed and easy to use.

Serums do not contain mineral oil, or pressed oils, like coconut oil or olive oil. They may contain essential oils, which are not really oils. Serums are water-based. What actually penetrates the skin is a concentration of active ingredients. A serum lasts much longer than a cream or a lotion of the same quantity, because one just needs to use a few drops of serum.

People with oily skins can just apply a serum, but if the skin is dry, or dehydrated, nourishing creams and moisturisers should also be used, along with a serum. Apply the serum first. Wait for a few minutes and then apply moisturiser. Only a few drops of serum should be applied and smoothed on.

Select the serum according to your needs. For the skin, apply serum after cleansing. Wait for a few minutes after cleansing and then apply a few drops of the serum, smoothing it on the skin lightly, with the fingertips. For the hair, a serum may be used on wet or dry hair. After shampoo, you may take a few drops of serum and apply it in the hair lightly. Then comb the hair so that it spreads easily through the hair. Or, you may comb the hair first, take a few drops of serum, spread it on both palms and smooth the palms over the hair.

So, along with cleanser, toner and moisturiser, you should add a serum for your daily care routine.

I have been associated with Zoya for a few years now. I launched their boutique in Delhi a couple of years ago, and I am now launching their new festive collection.

·        Why do you like Zoya jewellery?

Zoya is all about inspired design and fine craftsmanship. As a designer I appreciate their aesthetic and am happy to be associated with the brand.

·        What do you like the most about this collection?

It’s a colourful, vibrant and spirited collection. The collection is all about inner strength and its motifs are inspired by the rainforest, its exotic birds, colourful flowers, trees, vines and more. It uses beautifully carved and coloured stones like pink and green tourmalines, blue and yellow sapphires, peridots, emeralds and of course diamonds. And the craftsmanship is lovely!

·        Your favourite pieces?  On what occasions would you like to wear and how would you coordinate with your overall looks?

The collection is very versatile. There are pieces that would suit formal and informal looks. I like necklaces because they are bold and in your face. Today I’m wearing a necklace called the Light of the Rainforest and styling it formally with a gown from Gaurav Gupta.  I’m told the necklace is inspired by the light of the sun filtering through the leaves of a dense canopy of leaves. This is nice image, especially since I love nature. This necklace has a very modern silhouette and feels flexible and fluid. The segmentation is also clearly done with keen precision and the craftsmanship is gorgeous.

·        How would you describe your style when it comes to selecting jewellery pieces?

Classic and minimalistic

·        What, according to you, are the dos and don’ts for work wear jewellery?

Keep it simple and uncluttered. Wear one eye catching piece – if you have a bold necklace, skip the earrings.

·        What comes first, the jewellery or the outfit?

It could be either way.

·        Jewellery Faux pas?
Don’t always try and wear everything. Be selective and let the pieces stand out.

·        Shopping haunts?
My shopping addiction is everything to do with interiors, so it’s everywhere – from trade fairs of Milan and Paris to the flea markets of London.

·        Gauri Khan Signature Look

Jeans and a linen shirt – you can dress it up or down

·        Who has been your inspiration?

My mother

·        What is fashion/style according to you?

Fashion is a trend that comes and goes, style is lasting

Pooja Valeja

Pooja Valeja recently released her book, ‘ A Flight to Catch: A Tale of Unspoken Words’ The storyline is around the two characters who take a trip to Canada with their own agenda but the kind of situations they get into and jump out off, changes their perspectives. Each chapter unveils a different emotion of theirs. A solid mix of Comedy, Suspense, Drama and Romance can make everyone relate to one or the other aspects of it. A dilemma between going forward and holding back. This is a story of Pritz and Patel, and their most unexpected trip together. A trip they had not expected, it just happened or let’s say destiny had wonders in store for them. It’s an interesting rollercoaster of emotions and transformation of a relationship that switches many moulds with a twist in the tail.

Excerpts from an interview with her…

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

From a very young age, I’ve always been passionate about writing. I started with contributing articles to International media. I have always thought of writing one book at least, in this life time, and with a little time on my side, I started penning my thoughts. Little did I know that I would complete the book in about four months? Also another interesting fact is that I visited Canada last December, before the lock down. The memories were fresh.

How long did it take you to write a book?

It nearly took me about 2 1/2 months to pen down all the thoughts. The best part about writing a book was that most of these experiences were dealt by or noticed by me in my personal life. So all I had to do was to pick up a pen and a writing pad, and jot down.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

There is no fixed schedule, thoughts come to you naturally. I had kept a handy diary with me and started jotting down thoughts. . Later elaborate on it.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Well I love riding on romance and relationships, with loads of imagination and a cup of coffee

How did you get it published?

I definitely took advice from Mr Pawar, a publisher and author, and now I eventually have it on Amazon and  hardcopies through notion publishing.

Where did you get your inspiration ideas for your books? Any autobiographical touch?

Being in the 21st-century, we all deal with a number of relationship issue-the ups and downs. The inspiration to write about two friends came from there. While my personal holiday in Canada definitely gave me an insight. An interesting part in the story, that really happened with me was when I mistakenly landed up in America through a flyover close to Niagara Falls that connects Canada to America, The strange part was that I really did not have my passport also with me but somehow my Innocence saved me.

What do you think makes a good story?

A good story is a mix of feelings and emotions like, comedy, tragedy, sadness, laughter, fear and suspense. I personally think a number of key skills are involved in the story writing process.  It needs your full   involvement and the characters are made to feel absolutely.

In spite of the book being fiction, there is very little chance of unbelievable situations created.
