Father’s Day Special

Enjoy the South African Mzansi Experience with your Father, without stepping out of your home

Father’s Day is marked to honor fatherhood and paternal bonds, and to also highlight the influence that they have in a society, and in our families. It is a day to celebrate fathers – for who they are and all that they do – and let them know that they are appreciated by means of words, tokens, food or quality bonding time.

While travel – one of the best ways to bond with family – is on the backburner due to the current pandemic lockdown and restrictions, technology brings to our doorsteps the tools to explore, to dream and to plan that next vacation, once we are able to travel again. Hop onto the ‘armchair travel’ wagon, grab a comfortable spot, cups of coffee (dalgona or otherwise), and let your screen transport you across continents in a mere matter of minutes, for the Mzansi experience.

Mzansi. The word originates from umzantsi, which is Xhosa for low or south.

Situated at the southernmost tip of Africa, cradled by the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, is the Rainbow Nation of South Africa. Steeped in history, rich in culture and most popularly known for its unrivaled adventure and wildlife offerings, South Africa features high on the list of all those bitten by the travel bug.

The Mzansi experience on Google Maps, lets travel aficionados explore some of South Africa’s top natural attractions with 360-degree imagery from the comfort of their homes.

For those dreaming of beaches, this experience can be fulfilling. Street View allows you to watch the waves break at Sandy Bay, contemplate nature’s wonder and complexity as you watch the clear blue sky reflect in the water at Clifton Beach, go parasailing at Sunset Beach or just take a leisurely walk along Durban’s Golden Mile.

Those hoping to explore South African wildlife, can simply click over to Kruger National Park – one of Africa’s largest game reserves, and maybe catch a glimpse of rhinoceros grazing the plains, zebras frolicking around, giraffes as they stick their necks out to reach higher branches, or a herd of buffalos charging against the wind. You may even spot a leopard, who often remain! Home to over 350 elephants, Addo Elephant National Park is the best place to virtually tour if you are fascinated by these huge mammals.

Those in the mood for some breathtaking views, can slide their pointers over the Cape of Good Hope, Lion’s Head, or the stunning Table Mountain – where civilization and nature collide and yet, co-exist. Botanical enthusiasts can explore Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, or Durban Botanic Gardens.

While giving you a taste of these vast plains, the Mzansi experience will leave you with deeper appreciation for South Africa and the African continent, and will inspire you to travel sustainably and in harmony with nature, in the days to come.

Hands Launches ONE LOVE

A Curated Collection

9 designers. 9 countries. 10 handcrafted carpets.

Humanity’s unified stand against the sweeping impact of the pandemic the world is going through inspired an artistic endeavour by Mumbai-based architect Padmini Pandey. An endeavour that brought together Hands carpets and architects and designers from nine countries across five continents. Facilitated by innumerable discussions over transcontinental video calls, the One Love collection was born.

One Love is a special collection of ten handmade carpets curated by architect Padmini Pandey. A part of the proceeds from the collection will go to Project Mala, a special program  dedicated to the education of children. The sale of each carpet will sponsor a year in the primary education of one underprivileged child residing in and around the carpet making centres of India.

One Love that weaves us together

The collection is a labour of love of nine design professionals — Pamela Caspani from Australia, Regina Davila from Guatemala, Padmini Pandey from India, Sheena Poerwantoro from Indonesia, Luisa Scanu from Italy, Karla Celorio from Mexico, Katia Santillan S. from Peru, Svetlana Selivanona from Russia and Tuna Meier from Turkey.

SAMSUNG CSC

“We, as architects and designers, have the power to shape and mould societies! We must exercise this power of design to contribute to the society’s welfare,” elaborated Ms Pandey, known for her award-winning design and architectural work in hospitality and luxury homes. “When creativity is used in the case of adversities; it empowers the concept of humanity rising above all odds & one love is born” adds Ms. Pandey.

From the vividly coloured Australian reefs to the complex patterns of Russian ice fractals. From the very origin of human civilisation in Turkey to the contemporary icons of Italian architecture. Each designer brings in their distinct local cultures and artistic influences to reimagine the eternal, common elements of the sky and sea. A celebration of our diverse world, these designs are brought to life by Hands.

Fluid form, organic motifs and contemporary stylistics manifest in these carpets. While all carpets are of the same dimensions, the 10th carpet, a collaboration of four designers, breaks form. A juxtaposition of the projections of the designers’ hands, this carpet captures the essence of all 9 designers and their unique cultures. It is a reflection of humanity’s fortitude that goes beyond all limits to connect and empower the entire world. The intricacies and nuances of the colours used in the design of each carpet have been developed to precision by Hands. These carpets are hand tufted in wool, bamboo silk and botanical silk. Each piece is unique and takes up to ten weeks to craft.

“This tenacity to not just survive but to evolve in the face of adversity is inherently human,” says Ravi Patodia, Managing Director, Hands. “One Love is a reflection of the resilient human spirit that is driven by pure artistic instinct.”

A Stitch in Time Saves Nine

5 Pitfalls to avoid before Cosmetic Treatment

Nobody understands how big a step cosmetic treatment is except for you. After all, it’s you who will undergo the treatment and emerge as a renewed person. To help you make the right decision and prepare for the big day, here’s a simple 5-point checklist of don’ts before a cosmetic treatment procedure.

Be it cosmetic surgery or hair transplant, these tips and tricks are universally applicable. As the timeless adage goes– ‘A stitch in time saves nine.’ In this case, it can save a substantial amount of time, money, effort and heartburn if you follow the correct guidelines

.

#5 Stop smoking and drinking: A few weeks before you commence with your cosmetic surgery procedure, stop putting alcohol or nicotine in your body. This is consistent with all aspects of cosmetic surgery – facial reconstruction, plastic surgery or hair transplant. Both smoking and drinking can cause complications in the long run. In fact, it’s highly recommended that you start eating healthy and catching up on rest before the procedure.

#4 Don’t choose the wrong professional: Choosing the right medical practitioner is half the battle. Of all the options available in the market, only a handful may have the skill and acumen needed to serve your needs. Therefore, we recommend that you undertake some rigorous research and study before determining which professional to eventually work with.  There are two primary ways to determine if the surgeon you’re working with is competent or not. Check out his (or her) track record as well as his/her qualifications. Forewarned is forearmed!

#3 Don’t overpay for cosmetic treatment: The emotional significance of cosmetic treatment is understandably high. Therefore, you may go into the procedure with a mindset to spend a fortune. This is a wrong approach as there are competent professionals who can perform the treatment at reasonable rates. Yet again, the right amount of research is needed not only in determining whether you’ve picked the right professional, but also whether or not you’re overpaying for the procedure.

#2 Avoid certain foods and drugs: No two cases are similar when it comes to cosmetic surgery and the wide variety of treatments that fall under this banner. But certain food items need to be curbed as you get closer to the operation. For example, when it comes to hair treatment solutions, it’s recommended that you avoid junk food because it interferes with the condition needed to perform this particular surgery. Also, make sure you confirm with your physicians which drugs you can take before and after your surgery.

#1 Don’t spend too much time in the sun: This is a useful tip to follow both before and after the actual surgery. Not only can you develop a sunburn in the area of surgery, be it your face, body or scalp; too much exposure to the sun can even affect the healing process. Stay indoors and if you have to step out, do stay covered.

Dr Vinod Sonawane, from Bloom Hair Transplant Clinic, Mumbai, said, “Cosmetic surgery is a big step. It is something that has the potential to change your whole life. Be judicious and safe before you embark on this adventure. Best of luck to you!”
